Susan, good for you on the condo! Even if it's only a rental for now you'll get accustomed to a new lifestyle! This saturday we're having a big cookout and condo association meeting. Most all of the owners will be there so it's a chance to "meet and greet" with the other owners too. Wow, you have 13 rooms and an older house? That's a lot of work to take care of a house like that! And it can be expensive as I'm sure you know. Plus, there's all the outside work to be done. Yeah, I think you're going to like condo living. It's like you have your own place but you're never "alone", plenty of neighbors to socialise by the pool with here. And I've taken the trash out and got involved in a half hour conversation with a neighbor too. Some real characters here and all nice people. And when I make a big batch of lasagna and meatballs I take some over to a few neighbors. One time the condo association president asked me if there was anything different I'd like to see done. I told him that college girls in bikinis mowing the lawn would be a definate improvement! (Now THERE'S a business opportunity!) Once you get settled you'll notice that you have more time and money to do the things that you want to do instead of being a slave to a house. Everything outside here is taken care of so instead of painting a fence or mowing a lawn if I owned a house I can just take a ride down to the beach or sit out by the pool instead. I didn't mind too much taking care of a house before but when you start to get older it just makes so much more sense to live in a condo where everything is taken care of. You're definately going to like the condo lifestyle much more! That's good that you're renting first to get used to it for a while and then after a while you may decide to buy a condo instead of rent. I've always found that the biggest advantage to condo living is having so much more time to do things than I had while living in a house. One drawback is too high a percentage of renters that could be a problem. The rents for these places are $950 so that keeps out a lot of the rif raf. One time I had a renter upstairs who used to blast the stereo. These places are pretty well insulated so they must have had it turned way up! I asked them nicely if they could turn it down but they didn't. I said, "so,...you like music eh?" I cranked up some BAGPIPE music from 0300-0500. I didn't have to do it again.

Susan, you're a nice person and all, but i'm afraid i'm gonna have to kill you now [:@] i don't get to make a lot of rules in our house, but one of them is "No Christmas until after Thanksgiving". i don't want to think about it, i don't want to hear about it, i don't want to see it, and i sure as heck don't want to spend any money on it. Not in September, not in October. Those months are for Halloween [:)] i don't think we've ever had an artificial tree... Without the pine scent, it's just not the same. Last year i cut ours down myself at a local Christmas Tree farm, and i'll probably do the same this year.

popeye1250: Well I got a good deal on a month-to-month lease on a nice condo in a good area, and it was too good to pass up. It is also close to my youngest sister's house. My current house is just too much house, and my agent says it will sell soon, so I am hoping she's right. I will be moving between Hallowe'en and Thanksgiving, and that's part of the reason - petdave - that I am tackling all of this Christmas stuff so early this year (although I usually do it before Thanksgiving a lot of the time anyway, every year). I know it's probably too early to talk about it - but I can't help it this year (really). I gotta get it done early this year, or it might not happen. proudsub: Yes, I'd hire a house-cleaner. Gee whiz, if you can't do it at a time like this, just when would you? I'd think hubby would be able to understand that this one time, he sounds like a decent guy. Good luck w/the hip surgery. sub4hire: If it's a home-made gift or a guy, I say forget knitting Make him some cookies and candy and other goodies. Lots of it. The Holiday goody stuff I make is a real hit with the "Bachelor" types in my monthly Dinner group. They gobble it up every year, and if I don't get it to them soon enough, they ask me if and when I am making it. I suggest LOTs of high-quality baked goods for the men. Susan, that happens every year with her birthday. My nephew, her brother Pat was born on Nov 11th, Veteran's day easy to remember! (He thought all the parades were for him!) But, he's 20 in Nov and goes to U. New Hampshire for,...I think Medical Laboratory Technician so I'm kind of "safe" with him now that he's past 18. My neice Katy has high school graduation comming up in June of '08 and then her 18th Birthday next August. And she's talking about Medical school so my brother-in-law who I don't like is going to have to shell out some Major money! lol That cheap prick wouldn't even buy her an American Girl Doll for her 8th birthday so my sister got me to do it! So, I figure $100 for her graduation and another $100 for her 18th and I'm in the clear! Oh! As for gift suggestions books and music CDs are always good gifts!

I think you're right. I just ordered some books online at Barnes & Noble today for my father for Christmas (and his birthday, which is November 9th). I am also going to order him the DVD from Ken Burn's new PBS tv series on WWII (but it is back-ordered, as it doesn't actuallu go on sale until October 2nd.) - Susan

Susan, great gift for your father! I watched that Sunday through Wed and the second half runs this Sunday night through Wed Oct 3rd. What a great series! Ken Burns is a Master story teller! I have his series on "Baseball." I'm sure your father will love that! What a good daughter you are!

Not only is this a good holiday gift idea, it's also a great form of barter if you ever need a techie acquaintance to help you with your car, computer, or other household repairs [:)] i used to have a great deal going with a former co-worker... every couple of months her daughter would blow up her home computer with a virus or some piece of junk software, and i'd come into the office to find it sitting on my desk along with a chocolate cake [:D]

Not necessarily as a gift either but because each year people request them and I make way too much. Because of the fact there are so many requests. Even went into making doggie treats last year. So, everybody gets them. They aren't gifts. I can't hardly give him something he got the last few years that wasn't his gift then and call it a gift this year. So, I need a tangible gift that isn't edible. There is a reason people are wanting me to open up a catering business. They are all well fed around me to begin with.

I love those sugar cookies shaped like Christmas trees or snowmen with the colored sprinkles on top of them. And every spring I buy 20-25 boxes of Girl Scout cookies from my brother's daughters and locally here. The kids here sell them outside of grocery stores and Best Buys etc. I can eat a whole box of Tres Foils with a glass of milk. You can never have too many Girl Scout cookies!
