I did some quick research on http://www.building-cost.net/ which is no doubt not super accurate, but the cost ranges from $120,000 per home to $300,000 per home depending on which part of which state it's built in, the size of each home, and the number of fireplaces and so on. This is just to get a range anyway, not to have an exact number. The $300,000 version was for an extremely large home, and that's probably not the best. We'd want multiple smaller ones. However, the unique architecture would probably add to the cost, so just to be safe we could say $200,000. If that's an overestimate, make them bigger. If it's an underestimate, make them smaller. Anyway, that is not actually a huge amount of money, especially considering that if even 10-20% of it was put down, any bank would jump on the chance to finance the rest because if it was foreclosed they'd get $20-40,000. So really to make it happen we would only need about that much, I would think. I could be wrong, so maybe 30% down would be a better target, so $60,000 per home. It could theoretically be started with just one, but it seems like the concept really could use 3 or 4. So, the target would be $240,000. Again, not a lot. $1000 per person times 240 people, or $100 per person times 2400 people. And of course the people that chipped in to make the thing happen to begin with would get special perks as opposed to people that join later. If there was someone that had quite a bit of money to invest initially, it could be built closer to their location too. Anyway, just some thoughts.
