I’m afraid cigarette addition is just as much a disease as obesity…All but a very few obese people are just as self indulgent as cigarette smokers.

There is an immediate cure these diseases.. quit bending the arm that holds and delivers the booze, the food or the cigarette to your mouth.

Thanks for clearing that up, Mrs. Reagan.

Yeah... addictions (or obsessive / compulsive disorders) are a lot harder for some people to quit than for others - practically impossible in many cases. Body chemistry is different, personalities are different, experiences are different. Some people use in order to make their memories of their childhoods bearable, for example.

I've learned to try not to judge people in this regard.

Oh come now.how many excuses do we have to make for weak-willed people making excuses for themselves?  If someone can tel lme HOW they became a drunkand or why they get fat and stay that way.. I think  they can put that energy into getting their act together instead of hoping others will just accept them as the sorry speciminies of humanity they are..they'd be a lot happier.

Yeah, I can see how sharing a planet with all of us sorry "speciminies" would try the patience of such a superior being. Good thing it hasn't made you self-righteous or bitter or anything.

There are many, many diseases that you could suffer from,if you use tobacco.

Cancers in the mouth/throat,stroke,diabetes, cardiovascular issues, heart attack, loss of elasticity of the lung tissue and blood vessels,Emphysema.
You can lose a foot to  gangrene.

I have a friend who cut off a finger,on table saw. They reatached it,but because he was a smoker, his body wouldn`t heal as well, and the finger never reattached.

Many people, live for many years,in a debilitated state, tethered to an oxygen tank,or one those  portable(kinda) breathing units.

I have a neighbor who lives this way.He can barely walk to the mail box.
If you breath through a straw(one single straw),you can get an idea of what having diminished lung capacity is like.

Yes, smoking contributes to cardio-vascular desease as does sitting in your car instead of walking, as does a lousy diet. A bad diet can leasd to many comparable complaints as smoking, traffic pollution contributes to the same illnesses. You don't have to smoke to get any of the deseases you mention ion today's polluted environment. We still come back to the fact, if smoking is so dangerous why don't governments ban it, rather than profiteering from putting higher taxes on the people that smoke? Many drugs are banned so there are precedents. As long as the sale of cigarettes is legal, there is no moral reason for the government to charge directly or indirectly, punative taxes that will hurt the poor. If the government are so concerned about the poor, which trhey aren't,(as the US government's record shows, the poor can go fuck themselves.) they would give incentives to stop smoking, take exercise and eat healthily (by making healthy food cheaper than junk food).

Smoking like any other habit if indulged moderately will not harm you but if you are going to smoke, drink, eat crap, watch TV all day and then drive to work and sit on your arse, it becomes a dangerous contributor to illness as do the other habits. If a government forced people to pay higher taxes on TV watcher, junk food eaters and car owners, I wouldn't object to my paying higher taxews for smoking.

Global Warming can't be real, because apparently hell just froze over  when meatcleaver and I agreed on something - except where he tries to suggest that the US doesn't do anything to care for the poor.

I'd like to know exactly how much is spent on the poor here in the US through food stamps and "Social Security" and FEMA, etcetera etcetera etcetera. Free government cheese... subsidized housing.

How many government programs are there... does anyone know? Maybe what meatcleaver meant to say is that government bureaucracy needs to be bigger, more bloated, and it needs to suck more tax dollars from our wallets.

This was an oversight, I said American because most people on these boards are American but I would extend the sentiment of not caring for the poor to all western countries, particularly Britain. The poor are an after thought in most major countries, the middleclasses being the ones that benefit the most from social welfare and fiscal policies and programmes and they would benefit the most from taxing the poor for their habits while not taxing the middleclass for theirs. It is the British middleclasses that benefit from excessive and punitive taxes on cigarettes sold in Britain. The government blathers on about a healthier society but does nothing about inductrial and traffic pollution in the areas lived by the poor or by making cheap fresh food available in those areas. One judges by actions.
