"I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat. . . . You ask,
what is our policy? I say it is to wage war by land, sea, and air. War with
all our might and with all the strength God has given us, and to wage war
against a monstrous tyranny never surpassed in the dark and lamentable
catalogue of human crime. That is our policy. You ask, what is our aim? I
can answer in one word. It is victory. Victory at all costs - Victory in
spite of all terrors - Victory, however long and hard the road may be, for
without victory there is no survival."
- Winston Churchill

"In Critical and baffling situations, it is always best to return to first principle and simple action"
- Sir Winston S. Churchill

"Courage is rightly esteemed the first of human qualities, because it is the quality that guarantees all others"
- Sir Winston S. Churchill

Never give in--never, never, never, never, in nothing great or small, large or petty, never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense. Never yield to force; never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy.
-Winston Churchill

So I take it you admire Churchhill? S'kay, me too. I recall a story about a discussion he with a woman regarding morality, selling out your values and prostitution. The woman made some remark about how she, being a moral woman would never do such a thing. So Winston Churchill asked "Madam, would you sleep with me for $5?" She was appalled, "Certainly not!" So he then asked, "Madam, would sleep with me for a million dollars." The woman paused, "I don't know... I'd have to think about it, that's a lot of money." To which he replied, "So then you are a whore, we're merely quibling over price."

Here's another poem I enjoy in the same vein as your quotes.

Invictus (William Earnest Hensley)

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find me, unafraid.

It matters not how straight the gate
How charged with punishments the soul
I am the master of my fate
I am the captain of my soul.

My favorite example of power exchange from literature is by Shakespeare in Taming of the Shrew:

quote:

KATHARINA
Forward, I pray, since we have come so far,
And be it moon, or sun, or what you please:
An if you please to call it a rush-candle,
Henceforth I vow it shall be so for me.
PETRUCHIO
I say it is the moon.
KATHARINA
I know it is the moon.
PETRUCHIO
Nay, then you lie: it is the blessed sun.
KATHARINA
Then, God be bless'd, it is the blessed sun:
But sun it is not, when you say it is not;
And the moon changes even as your mind.
What you will have it named, even that it is;
And so it shall be so for Katharina.

Padriag, Faramir, Angel,
Thank you for sharing the beauty of these poems. What a delight to know that there are people out there who understand the deep beauty of the PE dynamics and whose hearts and minds are able to share poetry that expresses these everlasting emotions and dynamics.

she bows and exits,

"It has been proven that horror, nastiness, and the frightful are what give pleasure when one fornicates. Beauty is a simple thing, ugliness is the exceptional thing. And fiery imaginations always prefer the extraordinary thing to the simple thing."

Then said Almitra, "Speak to us of Love."

And he raised his head and looked upon the people, and there fell a stillness upon them. And with a great voice he said:
When love beckons to you follow him,
Though his ways are hard and steep.
And when his wings enfold you yield to him,
Though the sword hidden among his pinions may wound you.
And when he speaks to you believe in him,
Though his voice may shatter your dreams as the North wind lays waste the garden.
For even as love crowns you so shall he crucify you. Even as he is for your growth so is he for your pruning.
Even as he ascends to your height and caresses your tenderest branches that quiver in the sun,
So shall he descend to your roots and shake them in their clinging to the earth.
Like sheaves of corn he gathers you unto himself.
He threshes you to make you naked.
He sifts you to free you from your husks.
He grinds you to whiteness.
He kneads you until you are pliant;
And then he assigns you to his sacred fire, that you may become sacred bread for God's sacred feast.
All these things shall love do unto you that you may know the secrets of your heart, and in that knowledge become a fragment of Life's heart.
But if in your fear you would seek only love's peace and love's pleasure,
Then it is better for you that you cover your nakedness and pass out of love's threshing-floor,
Into the seasonless world where you shall laugh, but not all of your laughter, and weep, but not all of your tears.
Love gives naught but itself and takes naught but from itself.
Love possesses not nor would it be possessed;
For love is sufficient unto love.
When you love you should not say, "God is in my heart," but rather, I am in the heart of God."
And think not you can direct the course of love, for love, if it finds you worthy, directs your course.
Love has no other desire but to fulfil itself.
But if you love and must needs have desires, let these be your desires:
To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night.
To know the pain of too much tenderness.
To be wounded by your own understanding of love;
And to bleed willingly and joyfully.
To wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving;
To rest at the noon hour and meditate love's ecstasy;
To return home at eventide with gratitude;
And then to sleep with a prayer for the beloved in your heart and a song of praise upon your lips.

Yay lilpeachy!! Good one - but I like another by him even more:

On Pain

Your pain is the breaking of the shell that encloses
your understanding.

Even as the stone of the fruit must break, that its
heart may stand in the sun, so must you know pain.

And could you keep your heart in wonder at the
daily miracles of your life, your pain would not seem
less wondrous than your joy;

And you would accept the seasons of your heart,
even as you have always accepted the seasons that
pass over your fields.

And you would watch with serenity through the
winters of your grief.

Much of your pain is self-chosen.

It is the bitter potion by which the physician within
you heals your sick self.

Therefore trust the physician, and drink his remedy
in silence and tranquillity:

For his hand, though heavy and hard, is guided by
the tender hand of the Unseen,

And the cup he brings, though it burn your lips, has
been fashioned of the clay which the Potter has
moistened with His own sacred tears.

(My apologies for not knowing how to do umlauts)

Wenn irh's nicht fuhlt, irh werdet's nicht erjagen.
[If you don't feel it, you'll never get it.]
--Faust/Johann Wolfgang Goethe

And for those of us for whom pain is the power:

"And he said your pain is the breaking of the shell that encloses your understanding. Even as the stone of the fruit must break, that its heart may stand in the sun, so must you know pain."
--The Prophet/Khalil Gibran

"I like the idea of deciding something is going to hurt and doing it to find out how much. I don't like accidents much and I hate illness but I enjoyed having a tiny amount of dental work done to see what it was like without Novocaine. It was nice to know a little of the real deal. I always think being in pain for glory is a fun thing. Pain without injury fascinates me. Pain without fear is just another sensation. I could go on but you already know too much about me."

It's a little secret your friends won't tell
Heaven's highway sometimes takes you through hell
Love is work and work is hard
there are ghosts inside the dark and
It takes love pain the whole damn thing
Chorus:
if you want my heart you get everything
ya love pain the whole damn thing
It's a crown of thorns you wear
Love pain the whole damn thing
If you want my heart you get everything

Cinderella walked upon broken glass
Sleeping beauty let a whole lifetime pass
Love is blood and sweat and tears
Love means facing all your fears
Chorus repeat
And you get love pain the whole damn thing

A pair of dice ain't cheap
Heaven keeps us waiting
So baby wait with me
Cause if it's love we'll make it
I'll take it all
Can you take it all?
Chorus:

Gotta give a little something if you wanna get something back

Amy Sky: Love pain...the whole damn thing

This one was always one of my favorite songs, it's always held so true to me.
