Status: offline 		I've always wondered how someone could inflict pain without having at least a baisc appreciation for the sensation themselves.  It would be like having a preacher that doesn't have faith in god.

how will the sadist be able to interpret the masochist's response to the same "pain"...when the sadist isn't wired to interpret receiving pain as pleasure, either physically or mentally, as the masochist is?

why not?  there are folks who embrace Dominant/Top and/or submissive/bottom sides of themselves together rather frequently.
 
to embrace solely one or the other seems rare.

I am a dominant who is also a sadist and has no masochistic tendencies that have yet come to light so if I only had myself to go by and not any sort of knowledge through personal experience and what I have read, I would probably be wondering.  Luckily I DO have personal experience of others like you and the written words about people who have both sets of wires for love of Sadism and Masochism.

I will grant you that it can be confusing...dominants are "SUPPOSED" to be only sadistic, right?  And the converse then would also "HAVE" to be true...that all submissives/slaves are "SUPPOSED" to be only masochistic.  Funny how the complexity that is the human machine gets in the way of beliefs though.

I hope you can find your way out of it, if inflicting pain on yourself works, then there is no problem.  But if you really want to see what it feels like with someone else, why don't you make a list of things that you like or think you'd like to feel and see if there are any you'd let someone else do for you?
Think of it as delegating a task (?)

Status: offline 		I am both a sadist and a masochist, as I said before. I like administering the beating and receiving them.

But I don't really see the pleasure in DIY pain. Self-inflicted. I dunno, I just see it as a good deal more fun to have someone else holding the [insert instrument of torment here]. And it doesn't make me feel insecure about my normal status of "in control."

Granted, I've never been tested with handing over control, in the sense that I've never given it up and truly questioned whether I would get it back. That has never been an issue.

I sincerely appreciate pain and the pleasure it brings me EVEN if I am the inflicting it upon myself.  I indulge in the sensations of the pleasure of pain as any great masochist would. 

We are all wired differently and that is what makes us unique and interesting folks.

Both on my end too, it just seems to me that I see what other people can take and then I don't classify myself as maso, lol..  Although, I can take more than some others so who knows?
I don't normally self inflict as the OP does, but if thats the way she likes it, then its got to be fine for her.  To each his own, live and let live...pick a cliche'

And nobody has ever tested me either, :)
I just don't get restrained because my flight or fight response kicks in and it "just aint gonna happen"... although, I do enjoy a good tussle over it with those I trust, just for the adrenaline rush..lol
And yes, I have had people try to do it in earnest, I've resisted up to 5 at a time.

I know deep within myself.... I can't dominate.(outside every day life... been told I have a very dominant personality... being a single parent for past 10+ years sort of makes that happen)....nor inflict pain on another. The closest I come is when I use my finger nails on someone.

Status: offline 		Most definitely.  Although I identify as submissive, there is certainly a part of me that enjoys inflicting pain as well as receiving it.  True, I don't normally get to be the one wielding the crop (oh goodness, now there is a thought!), but I will find more "submissive" ways to do so.  My current favorite method is biting onto my boyfriend's shoulder during sex.

Status: offline 		It's okay to have a sub inflict pain on you. You can allow or tell them when to bite and claw you while they are on there knees, collared, and blindfolded. You can also have them twist your nipples while you are spanking them.

I happen to be a Sadist and a Massochist myself but have dominant the whole time. I've found how to inflict pain on myself with another person without having to submit to no one.

You can be both and remain dominant. Have your sub do exactly what you want done while you continue to inflict your random whips of pain. It works and you're still in complete controll as the dom.

Status: offline 		I think yes most definitely you can be both.  I have never fit in any one box, I have said for years now I am a sadistic masochist.  I am also a slave with rather dominant tendencies.  This makes for a very interesting life for Master

Status: offline 		I like pain getting and giving and my love of pain doesnt have to be tied to a role or to any traditional Dom /sub thing ....
I have a friend who likes a good solid flogging his sub cant bring herself to do this ..so I flog him silly and when I need someone to work me over with my electrical toys he steps in ...egalitarian pain  its fun too!
