GregariousGreta -> Capitalization formalities (10/6/2007 12:16:25 AM)

I'm wondering about this, but how many people enjoy the use or nonuse of capitalization as a sign of D/s?

I'm really not that fond of it at all. I suppose it's my love of proper spelling, grammar and punctuation that makes me squick when I see it; or the fact that my brain hates reading things with screwy capitalization; or the fact that it reminds me too much of the chat speakers; or that I really don't want my sub to be a total groveling fool (not to mention I point out that particular pet peeve of mine on my profile, and not one message I received since has been properly capitalized).

Hm, what’s your opinion on it?

BitaTruble -> RE: Capitalization formalities (10/6/2007 12:37:05 AM)

Why did you capitalize the 'd' in D/s if you feel so strongly on the subject?

I'm truly curious as it seems contradictory to the spirit of your OP.

Dunno.  I've gotten into leet talk some in that sometimes I won't even bother capitilize the first sentence.  Too much capitilizing is very iirritating also, even worse than !!!!.....The only thing I generally mispell intentionally in my leetness is COOL - which I almost always say kewl.  That is about the only thing that I switched over....I can imagine if I was in college, using that terminology would turn myself off.....dudes an idiot, he keeps saying KEWL..... oh, I sometimes use dude too because you cannot have enough western theme/valley guy in the world.....

I prefer proper punctuation, spelling, etc, myself.  Nevertheless, like us all, I can get lazy about it....<----omg, the sentence will never end!!!

It was a typo. :P

I don't mind caps or the lack thereof. I sometimes may use a grammatically incorrect capital for emphasis, by and large I pay very little attention to text "protocol" however. I don't care for the cap slashy (W/we) business at all. If someone wants to write that way, that's their prerogative, but I find it to be hard on the eyes.

::chuckles:: Okay.

I use improper capitalization all the time because I capitalize Master and not slave. It's very inconsistent on my part and one of the few deliberate errors that I will allow myself to make so I can't complain if someone else takes it further than I do.

What I find truly difficult are the posts in which slash typing is consistently utilized to the extent that my eyeballs bleed and my brain fries trying to read it. Generally, I pass those by unread and leave it to those with better vision and younger eyes to decipher.

hmm, strange, I thought everyone loved he/she and his/her thru-out all books etc.  They should fix the bible so that instead of all the constant his thru-out it, its his/her to make it more understandable and up-to-date in the 21st century.

Reminds me of the Beauty and the GEEK where they talked to those quantified as beauties and one was male, yet refered to  them all as female.  I would of took offense if I was that male....(I'm not being sarcastic here)

If your refering to someone theoretically, it shouldn't just be his.  Add his/her..... (I'm being sarcastic)

hisannabelle -> RE: Capitalization formalities (10/6/2007 1:42:50 AM)

greetings greta,

in general i try to use proper capitalization, spelling, and punctuation, because the lack of such does get on my nerves. however, on some forums (this and one other forum i post on, and on livejournal as well), i use lowercase always because i am more comfortable with that. usually when i use lowercase i'm kind of inconsistent...i normally don't capitalize d/s at all, but occasionally i will capitalize Him (although at other times i will leave it lowercase).

when i do use normal capitalization, rather than all lowercase, i write d/s as D/s and m/s as M/s, and generally in that mode i always capitalize Him. i think in some cases it is acceptable not to use generally "accepted" notions of capitalization, and using this kind of capitalization isn't necessarily unprecedented (for example, in my faith we routinely use capitalization for the titles and pronouns referring to highly respected religious leaders, and i do not see that as much different from capitalizing Him, or something like that).

respectfully,
annabelle.

Some people do the Dominant caps and submissive non, some people don't, Some people Use Caps and puntuation correctly while others don't. Some are great spellers, while some couldn't write out the alphabet. People are people and they're going to do what they want or what they feel is correct for the situation they find themselves in at the moment as well as feel comfortable with for whatever their reasons. If someone does it in an effort to be polite, that's fine, but when it comes from a desire to inflate one's self, it's not something I care for.

I can live without it.

Domin8tingUrDrmz -> RE: Capitalization formalities (10/6/2007 6:04:58 AM)

Personally, I am like you in the fact that I prefer capitalization to be used according to what we were taught in English.

however, i'm lazy, and when i chat in a forum...or other venue similar, i tend to use lowercase for everything...lol.

In formal writing, I do my best to use proper grammar, punctuation, spelling, and capitalization.

edited cause my laziness caused me to overlook a spelling error. :D

Heh, made me chuckle.

Anyways, the capitalization thing never bothered me. If anything, it's nice to at a glance have a better idea of who are the dom/mes or subs posting. It doesn't matter per se, but it's somewhat an interesting behavioral study, to see if there's a correlation between opinions on a thread and D/s orientation.

I feel the same way you do. It annoys the crap out of me. For those posters who say "if you don't like it, don't read it", well I don't.  To me it's just plain stupid. I don't like to read posts from "this sub" or "this girl" or "this one" either. Just puts me into an eye rolling frenzy.

DocRudy -> RE: Capitalization formalities (10/6/2007 6:16:14 AM)

You don't visit the Gorean forums, do you?

apiercedkitty -> RE: Capitalization formalities (10/6/2007 6:55:37 AM)

i do it out of respect and because for some unknown reason, i feel comfortable capitalizing Him and not i. i do, however, find it a bit of a struggle to switch back to proper capitalization when i'm writing a paper for school... lol
my Master doesn't really care one way or the other - so i really do it for myself. i do admit tho that the slash capitalization tends to make my eyes water.

clodivs -> RE: Capitalization formalities (10/6/2007 7:04:00 AM)

I don't really see the sense in it myself.  I prefer good punctuation, but it's a convention that some people put great stock into.  If someone consistently puts their own name in lowercase, and obeys all the other rules of good spelling and grammar, it doesn't bother me at all.  If someone introduces themselves with a lower-case name, I'll try to use that in addressing them, as I figure it's their preferred spelling.

So, basically, I'll treat others as I want to be treated.

amiciaN -> RE: Capitalization formalities (10/6/2007 7:51:52 AM)

(using fast reply)

I do capitalize pronouns and the like when referring to *my* Master NChaka, but not when referring to other Dominants.  I do tend to capitalize Master, Dominant, etc., but that is generally in line with correct formal usage of an honorific.  I do use the W/we stuff when chatting with my Master via text or in emails to Him, but I don't do it here, since it is difficult for many to read.

At no time has NChaka insisted I do things one way or the other, and He has never used capitalized pronouns when referring to Himself.  One of the reasons I capitalize pronouns and the like when referring to Him comes from being the SCA for a number of years and writing scrolls.  In those documents, SCA royalty are referred to with capitals in recognition of their sovereignity within that organization.  If I had no trouble capilizing a name/title/pronoun for a 'stick-jock' (no offense intended to the stick-jocks out there), wouldn't it actually be insulting my Master if I did not do at least the same for the One who owns me??  He IS *my* Sovereign and I feel that using capitalization is a proper way to reflect that, with solid historical reference within the English language for doing so.

As always, this is only my opinion; ymmv.

sambamanslilgirl -> RE: Capitalization formalities (10/6/2007 8:15:02 AM)

i don't do the standard A/a writing protocol denoting Master/slave/sub (which many use here) because it drives me crazy reading a poster's replies when written like that.

i merely capitalize Daddy or SO/Dom when talking about them and leave me in lowercase.  it works best for me.

The only time I use it is during training as an exercise in language affecting attitude. Usually lasts a few weeks. Can last longer if it seems valuable for a particular individual.

With someone I'm not involved with, I find frankly very annoying because I feel like I'm being pulled into a scene dynamic I have not given my consent to be part of.
