BossyShoeBitch -> I need piano advice.. (10/6/2007 9:19:01 AM)

I wish I had room for a baby grand, but I only have room for an upright piano..

What do I look for?
How do I know if I am getting a good price or getting ripped off?
Is it a mistake to buy used?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated..

Go electric.Buy used.

I have an electric keyboard.  I need a piano.

What makes  you say buy used?

Upright Pianos should only be used in Pubs and Schools. The sound is dire not that I’m an expert. One thing I’ve never understood is that Grand Pianos have lids but no one ever shuts them? It’s a bit like driving your car with the bonnet open. If the sound is better with the lid open then why make them with lids on? You crazy Piano manufacturers.

I probably showed my ignorance there. Oh well never mind.[:D]

Using that logic, that means I wouldn't  be able to get a piano at all, since I stated in my opening that I had no room for a baby grand...

If your in the quality brands section,  a used piece is just as good as new(usually) and much cheaper.

Though slightly different,up-rights sound wonderful,IMO.
Just get a good one.

It`s just that the sound comes at you at  from another angle. Essentially ,it has the same parts and weight.

If you wait and are patient, really nice deals pop up on Ebay,Craig`s List, etc.

You could build an extension. I have a friend he'll do mates rates for you.

Do they still make the white keys out of Ivory, because I’d get one with ethical sourcing of materials? Not that I want to add to your woes.

The lid is to keep the dust out, when you`re not playing it.
Same w/ the key cover.

if buying used - take someone with you who plays (if you don't yourself) to test the sound, string pitch and keys (making sure none stick and/or broken) before purchasing

also measure the space of the area where you want to place your piano (if buying new or used) some pianos do run small to large for uprights.

I know someone ,who did just that.

Also have a buddy, who put on an extension, just to have a pool table.

See I should have guessed that[:D].  You don’t want to be vacuuming between all them strings now.

Thanks Samba..
Is there anything else they would/should check?

Any recommendations on manufacturers or price?

BossyShoeBitch:
Either knock out a wall so you have room or move to larger digs.
It is very difficult to lounge provocatively on an upright.[;)]
The mental picture of you doing so is one I am cultivating.[:D]

Hmmm.. You may have a point there...

FullCircle -> RE: I need piano advice.. (10/6/2007 10:34:30 AM)

Although it conjures up a nice image just ensure it is sturdy enough to take the weight. A lot of people overlook this.[:D]

excuse me?

FullCircle -> RE: I need piano advice.. (10/6/2007 10:48:27 AM)

It’s a common theme to lounge on a piano but I bet not many manufacturers take account of this in their design. Maybe I’m wrong I suppose but I’m not a piano manufacturer.

my best advice for buying a used upright piano would be to check make sure the structure and the keys are in good condition...the outside is what really matters, unless you are buying an antique, which if you are concerned about price, i am not guessing you are...if the outside is in good condition, no water damage, no impact damage, no wood rot, etc....and the keys are all there....go for as cheap as you can get it...the rest can and will need to be repaired....after moving a piano across the street it usually needs to be retuned at the very least...re stringing it, replacing the hammers is not that expensive in the long run if you got a good deal on the over all piano...and when they replace the needed parts they will tune it, obviously....

where to find a used upright...garage sales and craigs list and classifieds and internet ad's....it may take a while to find the right piano at the right price, but if this is a serious investment you want to make....you can wait...otherwise....theres stores that will sell you a perfectly good, brand new upright....

as for the baby grand...its not that big a deal...unless you have a huge pompus house or just really really really like the look of a baby grand...an upright works just as well, if not better for a home...

have fun
chelle

edited to add: oh and on finding a good person to restring and generally repair your used piano once you've bought it...go around to those places that sell new piano's and look for ad baords where local people can put their ad's...and give business to the itty bitty companies who can come to your house and do the work at your place....like i said, after moving a piano it usually needs to be retuned...

seeksfemslave -> RE: I need piano advice.. (10/6/2007 11:14:46 AM)

The advice to buy electric was spot on IMO. You can control the volume lol
Electronic Pianos are available I have a Yamaha Klavinova which sounds just like the real thing.

Just wish I could play it I dont mean I cant play at all, I just cant play very
well.
I can belt out a bit of Boogie Woogie and a bit of Chopin lol
Its not nice to belt Chopin but there you are.
