there was a chance before i was born that i was going to be named after my Nana. i still shudder to this day wondering what school would have been like named Fanny Lee. Tami is bad enough. it just sounds so bloody cute. not to mention no one can ever spell it, or half the time pronounce it. then you get all the tams and the ta ta so the safest thing was to opt for the middle Lee, just sounded a bit less cutesy.

Back in the day on fair rides, I had my share of leaky lee's. I'z afraid of heights LOL.

My name is Julie. So often, I hear "Jewel" or even worse, "Jewels". Blech.

My father named Me Julie because 1) I was born in July, and 2) It is easily pronounced in Japan.

I've always hated when some one automatically shortened my name, mostly because i dislike the shortened version more than the full name itself, and my mother always told me if she wanted me to be called by the shortened version she would have named me such. (My name is Cynthia, and it's like nails on a chalk board to be called Cindy) Because of this, i generally refer to a person with the name they introduce themselves with, ie....Michael as opposed to Mike...Joe as opposed to Joseph etc. If i am asked, i will give my own shortened version that friends and family use. (Cyn)

In the case of my son, my husband at the time wanted to name the boy after him, not only did he have a middle name i didn't like, but he was a Jr. I finally agreed on the first name (James) but broke the Sr, Jr, and the dreaded III cycle. Also, as another poster stated, i had an aversion to him ever being called Jimmy or Jim, so naming him James was contingent upon us calling him Jamie. Now, only people who see his drivers license know that he's actually a James

SD is your real full name Jo?? Yes, for a gal that is different, and I thought a situation like 'A Boy named Sue' was only in songs. How awkward for you. Yes, I would guess that many would assume it was a shortform, and I also understand your distress for it. It is similar to a gender confusion (when very young)yet you were still too young to even understand the gender biases as of yet?? Later you must have realized OMG my name has gender (wrong gender) attachement?

Her name was Joanne or Joanna if I remember correctly. Yes, that is my full given name. I've never thought of it from a gender point of view. The story behind it was that my father loved the book "Little Women" and the strength of the character Jo within it.

Of course the confusing part was that unless my middle initial was added on and my "full" name put to use I never realized I was in trouble. Having such a short name has it's advantages at times.
