You seem like an intelligent guy on the surface.
It baffles me as to why you can never seem to grasp that not everyone has the same viewpoints, limits, emotions...fill in the blank...as you.  You can't seem to accept that those who don't follow your method of thinking are not wrong.  Your ways are the best for you.  Not for everyone else.  No one tries to shove ideas down your throat.  You ask.  We answer and even then you can't stop passive aggressively judging anyone who has different views as you.
Like I said earlier...once again your thread has become a "my way is better than your way" thread all thanks to your closed mind.
My last post here...I'll just read and laugh from here on out in this thread.
It's a shame because it had such potential too.  You are your own worst enemy.

See...I get this...I was the same way about Daddy/daughter relationships....I ABSOLUTELY couldn't for the life of me "get" them.... In a thread about them I began to understand....and as I began to "get" it, not only did it appeal to me...I actually began to see a need, and a desire for it in my own life. What a DIFFERENCE huh?! I was amazed at the enlightenment I was able to get my closing my mouth,(hands off the keyboard) and listening to the gracious people that were willing to share here.

Amazing what an open mind can accomplish, that is awesome breatheasone.  Thanks for sharing that [:)]

Heh.  That made me chuckle J

Lashra -> RE: Machismo and BDSM (10/9/2007 11:37:40 AM)

I don't like cocky, arrogant men who have nothing better to do but blow their own horns for all to hear. The horn blowers I just ignore as they don't impress me in the slightest.  Particularly the ones who believe that they are superior to me because they are male.[:'(] Sorry I don't believe in the superiority of either gender. However I do like a confident, intelligent man with a good sense of humor. He has to respect me as much as I respect him, if he doesn't he will get kicked to the curb.

In my BDSM relationship I am involved with a submale who is confident, intelligent and has a great sense of humor. He treats me the way that I want to be treated and we are both happy this way. Is he macho? To a degree yes he is, but he is macho in what I consider a "good" way. He is protective, he is there for me when I need him, he respects me as an equal person. He likes to do "guy" things like hunt, fish and watch sports. I happen to enjoy those activities myself.[:)]

Yes some women do like a man who flexes his muscles and struts around like a rooster, but personally, I'd rather have a man who is concerned about me rather than trying to control who I am as a person.

Bob I think that you are taking one and only one view as to what machismo means, and you have received a whole lotta answers as to why women tend to like a man who has machismo because they areconfident within themselves, andconfident in their place in society.

Camille, do you feel the need to stop the discussion?
Well now Bob, do you ask that because I stopped posting in your thread? If so, the reason I stopped posting was because I had errands to run & things to do. (That means I was offline)If you're asking if I have exhausted my supply of words with you then yes. I feel the need to stop this discussion. I find it pointless to try for real discourse with you after it has been pages and pages of the same 'whyyyyyyyy'?.You baffle me and I don't have the energy or inclination to try and figure out what you get out of these discussions when you refuse to even acknowledge that someone other than yourself has a valid view. Even when there are many people saying the same thing to you.

agirl -> RE: Machismo and BDSM (10/9/2007 11:56:56 AM)

I can find machismo appealing.....not always and not in all men, though.  It depends how it's displayed. As a spectator and as a female; it's the exaggerated difference between me and a man that is fascinating, in most of the ways it's expressed.

There are lots of instances where I'd find it ugly, unattractive and distasteful but others where I'd find it the opposite.

I know a lot of men that think the very same way about the female version of it.

The type of machismo you described here..

Machismo, as it existed in the world I grew up in, was about men being superior to women. It was about the presumption that it was the male perogative to take what he wanted from women. It was also considered vulgar and rude........

.......isn't something that would inspire my respect, as an outlook. In my personal relationship I chose to to give someone the authority to *take what he wants*....but if he had the above outlook, I wouldn't be his in the first place.

I see once again a thread has become about me and my imagined foibles and beliefs, and not so much the topic.

A pity, it was going so well, too.

Now Bob, that’s a tad naughty isn’t it?  That makes it seem like you’re trying to give the impression that your hugely intellectual debate was going swimmingly until some rough kids from the village turned up and pissed in your chips.

When in actual fact, reading it through, it reads much more like;

a) you put forward a POV, couched as a question.
b) You get replies which don’t agree with you.  Lots of them.
c) you then rationalise this into “you’re all wrong, it’s so unfair, nobody wants a debate”, when by your own rules, “debate” means “agrees with Bob”.

Communication within a forum situation isn’t about constantly asking “but why? Why? Why? Why? Why?”, it’s about thesis, antithesis, synthesis, in that someone puts forward an idea, people chuck rocks at it but don’t get it right themselves, but it sparks ideas in people’s heads that bring forward other, more evolved ideas, which are in their turn subjected to scrutiny, and thus the theory evolves and changes.

I’m seriously, honestly, not having a pop at you; all I’m pointing out is that you are, as someone else said, your own worst enemy, in the way you conduct yourself.  I have been accused of similar things at other times in other places and you know what?  Turns out they were right, I was being a stubborn, stone-headed curmudgeon.  Proclaiming oneself to have an open mind doesn’t actually mean one possesses an open mind.

I think some of it isn’t so much how you think as how you write; your writing style is very confrontational.  I know about this as I too, as mentioned above, am no stranger to the purple-faced eppy and the keyboard tantrum.  You’re different; it’s all kept in check, but to the point where you just keep plugging on with the same argument, regardless of what anyone says in return … we can all see what you think, but what have you learned?

Hope you’ll take that in the spirit it is intended, old sport.  It’s just that, ATM, watching you respond in threads you’ve started is a bit like watching someone trying to swat a fly on the end of their own nose with a lump of 2x4; entertaining, but only because of the copious blood-letting.

I thought that was well written RapierFugue. What bothers me (and yes I know it's my own fault) is that I keep freaking trying lol. I start out really thinking that presenting my thoughts might spark something in Bobs thoughts. Bob, you are not stupid. If you were an idiot I would just shrug and skip on by but dang it my first responses are always an attempt to answer your question(s) and you utterly refuse to actually understand what I'm saying. Then it somehow gets turned into '-insert posters nick- thinks in a way that is not quite right because I Bob am correct'. Then I try again lol [sm=banghead.gif] .Ohboy does this mean I'm nuts for continuing to delude myself as to the potential but never ever realised ending?I need a pumpkin beer.

velvetears -> RE: Machismo and BDSM (10/9/2007 12:30:08 PM)

LaTigresse -> RE: Machismo and BDSM (10/9/2007 12:31:49 PM)

I don't know about you velvet but I hate beer. If the beer tasted enough like pumpkin, granted I am thinking about pumpkin pie and so forth, I would try it!

Have you tried English real ales?  Or Belgian beers?  Totally different characters and tastes to your American lager-style stuff.

Don’t get me wrong, I like good lager, especially in hot conditions, but a good, strong flavoured dark ale is superb on a colder evening.

Some of them are flavoured with fruits, some with other things, like cinnamon or cloves or, in the case of Young’s Chocolate Stout, chocolate!

If you see them in bottles at your local stores, or on tap at a microbrewery, which I'm told more and more of are springing up in the US, give em a go – you might just find one you like [sm=smile.gif]

I'm well aware of that, Camille.

Must make you wonder how people like Aswad and I can have intelligent, mature, civil discussions despite differences of opinion without either resorting to name-calling or "he's closed-minded because he won't agree with me" types of accusations.

1. he's not stupid.
2. he has intelligent, mature, civil discussions with other intelligent and mature individuals despite differences of opinion and without resorting to name-calling.

hmmm .... what a puzzle [8|]

ISTR it’s exported by Youngs in bottles, so you might try a net search of your local drinks providers.

Very malty, slightly sweet, as stouts often are, strong dark chocolate to drink, with a hint of bitter dark chocolate as an aftertaste.

Give it a go [sm=smile.gif]
