Termyn8or -> Paragraphs (10/10/2007 6:37:14 AM)

Now be aware that I am impressed with the average intelligence of people on this forum, but there is one thing alot of people are missing here. Paragraphs.

Paragraphs delineate different concepts, but moreso, different phases of the concept of the whole post. Using proper form when it comes to paragraphs makes the piece alot easier to read. Using paragraphs has been around for a long time, and exists because when you have pages of material to read, it is hard to get your eyes back to the exact same spot in the document. And you do look away and you definitely blink from time to time.

The open space between paragraphs gives the eyes a reference point ^ see that one right there ? Now look across the room. See how easy it is to get get back to where you were ?

When you sit there and write a post, you are not getting paid, you simply want to express yourself. Well it follows that you want people to read what you wrote. Why not make it easy on them ?

I must admit that when I read a post that is only one paragraph, yet is a bunch of screenfuls of text, I might not read it all. If you thought it was bad with paper, well some people can't just stare at the monitor forever.

Precisely where the breaks go in is up to the author of course, but  it should be done during the composition phase. I have seen where people seemingly went back and threw in a few line breaks. It is easy to tell. This because those line breaks indicate no seperation of thought, in fact sometimes break a sentence apart.

When you hit the dot (period) and look away from the screen, or take a deep breath, consider hitting the enter key twice. When you pause typing because your mind ran out temporarily and you, as the writer needs a few second break, don't you think it would be nice for the reader to have one as well ?

I am not going to iterate all the rules of spelling, grammar and punctuation here. I have no intention of starting a writing class. [But I offer up this, what I consider to be constructive criticism to those, who probably know who they are. ]

Now in that above paragraph, can someone point out what is wrong with it's structure ? Normally I would've fixed it, but in this case have specifically decided not to, for demonstrational purposes. Hint, it is in the last sentence.

I cannot, in technical terms only an English teacher knows, describe exactly what is wrong with that sentence, but it is formed incorrectly. Punctuation is perfect except for the fact that it does not match the form which makes it wrong.

Many people with high intelligence have poor writing skills. I have long admitted that I cannot read nor write. In a way. You see I cannot read cursive writing almost at all, and I certainly cannot write it. Moreover I can't even print worth a damn, and have trouble reading others' printing. But I know where to put an apostophe. When it is like a computer or typwriter, and the letters are as I expect them to appear, I read and type with no problem, but just writing down my phone number on a business card is a chore.

I consider this a cognitive disability, but not an overly debilitating one. I wonder if people who write incorrectly, I mean form sentences incorrectly and do not correctly format their documents have a similar disability. I have learned by example, by reading. My Mother is a Catholic school girl (well was) and every once in  while I will just call her up, no longer with a spelling query, but about the form of a sentence. I admit that sometimes it is very difficult.

But I knew to hit the enter key twice right there.

If you're down here I guess this was readable. Comments welcome.

Thank you for this post! It seems to me there is an overabundance of punctuation, grammar and spelling problems on CM, in the forums and, most certainly, in messages and on profiles. I just assumed it was because most are usually typing with one hand...

Alumbrado -> RE: Paragraphs (10/10/2007 6:58:24 AM)

This isn't a written assignment, this is conversation in text form.

If someone speaks constantly in perfect grammar it is no wonder they have no friends, and therefor, enough time to flood the boards with petty complaints about other people having an enjoyable discussion. [;)]

Ouch.

To be honest...I don't write correctly because I don't know how. I know I could learn. Take a class at the community college or something. See...I KNEW i should have gotten more then a tenth grade education LOL. (before you say it, yes I know that by tenth grade I should have already learned that in English class)

Owner59 -> RE: Paragraphs (10/10/2007 7:23:47 AM)

 For me,it paints a picture of the poster.The occasional slip or error, makes you look human.6 mistakes per sentence makes one look lazy.Rereading once,twice ,3 times to get the gist,is annoying.

I try to at least proof-read and use a spell-check program,even when I`m typing w/ one hand.[image]http://www.collarchat.com/micons/m11.gif[/image]

laurell3 -> RE: Paragraphs (10/10/2007 7:30:45 AM)

yawn........I prefer the human approach over the belitting, perfectionist, nitpicking, precise approach any day...wait.......is that you mom?????

Come on, unless it's totally undreadable internet abbreviation garbage, I'm much more interested in what someone has to say than their paragraph structure.

FR

I could type with perfect spelling and perfect grammar.  I could even type with perfect punctuation and perfect spacing; I might even know how to use a punctuation mark you do not.

but i am not writing a freakin college essay...so...i don't...so...deal with it...or don't read my posts...i don't care...i don't really write for you, specifically...

take care...

"If someone speaks constantly in perfect grammar it is no wonder they have no friends, and therefore, enough time to flood the boards with petty complaints about other people having an enjoyable discussion."

Surprisingly incorrect. The fact of the matter is that I have a social life that is almost too intense. I have just spoken to my Mother for the first time in two weeks, that because I never have much time alone.

And I did not flood the boards, nor did I berate anyone. I offered constructive criticism, I welcome you or anyone to quote me in the OP where I did otherwise.

I maintain this point, if anyone sits down and writes a post, it is expressly for others to read. To that end the logical path is to make what they write as pallatable and easy to read as possible.

And I have no big problem with people not quite doing it right, no capitalisation, incorrect punctuation, or any of the like. My point is, if you wite a paragraph of 1,000 words, people will not usually read the whole thing. If you as the author cause that to happen, that is counterproductive to your goal of getting your thoughts into others' minds for due consideration.

And, as due repayment for your barb about me I offer you this : I suggest that you do not engage me in a battle of wits with that brain.

Fair enough ?

Termyn8or -> RE: Paragraphs (10/10/2007 7:47:54 AM)

OK, a few have gotten in edgewise.

Understand this, I am ONLY talking aboiut paragraphs. I don't care if you end every sentence in a $. People can deal witrh that. It is the full screen of text with no white spaces. That is all.

I agree that this is not an assignment in grammar school, I am just saying that sometimes you have to hit the enter key twice. I am saying that it is more conducive to getting your idea out there.

That is all. If I insulted anyone it was not intentional, and if anyone wants to engage me in a battle of wits, get ready. In the OP, where did I berate anyone ? I meant it as constructive criticism and if it is not taken that way, I just don't know what to tell you. Perhaps the problem is not mine and some people cannot take criticism no matter how well intentioned. If one day I tell you that you are too drunk to drive, don't take that shit from me, go out to your car and show me. Then we can see if you can get to CM from jail.

Read the very first line of the OP before getting your panties in an uproar.

Care to show me where I said anything about you in particular? Or are you admitting that my general comment hit too close to home, and  goaded you into that childish reaction?

BTW, you haven't used a proper paragraph yet (beside your many other errors), in this entire thread.

Love this thread.

It was clearly directed at the person who always speaks in perfect grammar, even in the most casual of moments.

Seen anyone like that around here lately? [:D]
