When my kids were babies I bought diapers at Walmart. Why you ask? I had twins and I would have needed a second mortgage to buy the little disposable goodies if I bought them elsewhere. Today I prefer not to shop at walmat -- it makes me feel like cattle being hearded from the long lines to the grazing buffet places that sprout like weeds around the Walmart parking lot. (Nothing against any actual cows that might be reading this of course.)

Id rather find something a bit more unique and personal...their service sucks, they dont stock anything I cant find better somewhere else..even without spending twice as much. The majority of the time I can find something better at fairly compareable prices to walmart if I take the time to look. So what if I spend a bit more time in town...at least Im getting off my fat ass and away from the computer....heh....

I absolutely loathe shopping at Walmart. And I applaud their employees for having a pair and standing up to the conglomerate. Unfortunately, there are a few items I just can't get anywhere else. I'm a diabetic, os my sugar free choices are severely limited elsewhere. I have searched high and low across Cincinnati for the beverages I drink, but not a single place sells them. They also sell my test strips; noone else does. I'm just not willing to pay that extra $75 a month on medical supplies elsewhere. Being a diabetic without insurance is expensive. Gwen

Under Sam Walton WalMart built a reputation for selling inexpensive goods that were American made whenever possible. After his death the corporate philosophy of WalMart changed to buying almost entirely foreign made goods. Currently 25% of the entire industrial output of China goes directly to WalMart. Since I can no longer find any products in WalMart stores that are labeled "Made In America" I choose to not shop there and take my custom elsewhere. I haven't crossed the threshold of a WalMart store in over a decade. While the argument can be made that WalMart is good for the impoverished if we keep letting WalMart and other major corporations send all the manufacturing jobs out of the country we will soon all be impoverished. Overall I feel that WalMart in its current form is bad for America.

made in America is a scam. if it is labelled made in Ohio, you are better- as the Marianna Islands dont follow min wage rules- and anything made there can legally be labelled MIA

G'morning all: (Fast Reply) Not everything at Wal-Mart's is crap. I've found a few gems among the trash. Mostly household goods. Their prices are more reasonable than most other department stores and I'm positively addicted to the DVD bargain bin. Stopping in for an emergency staple like milk at 0300 hours is also nothing to sneeze at when there's no convenience stores nearby. NYC is overflowing with corner shops for that but when you're visiting your boyfriend who resides in a small city in the middle of rural Pennsylvania, the options are admittedly less extensive. As for food items in general, my tastes run on the expensive side and there's a local gourmet deli that services my needs quite handily. As Ghita mentioned, shopping is more pleasurable in the smaller boutiques than in some giant mega store. IMNSHO, the staff tends to be more knowledgeable and pleasant, which I will spend a few extra dollars for. I'm also drawn to hand crafted goods. I like finding connectivity with an artist through their work and most hand crafted objects tend to last longer due to superior construction. Shows the person you're buying for a bit more care and diligence. As for Wal-mart's impact on economy, politics, etc? Everything has an impact. Frankly, I'm a bit selfish. If they're carrying the same name brand for less? Guess what; I want to save some money, I'm going to Wal-Mart. And I don't give a rat's arse if someone looks down on me for my most common denominator being my financial well being. Stay safe, play nice, & share your toys w/ others... [:D] Bella

Setting aside the union busting, illegal hiring, and the demise of Mom & Pop stores, I am mildly curious about the comments on the quality of Walmart merchandise. Did anyone really expect to be getting boutique merchandise at flea market prices? As far as the regular name brand stuff goes, how is a Poulan chainsaw a cheap piece of crap for $129 at WallyWorld, but a wise shopping decision for $149 at Lowes? Same for Michelin tires, Sony cameras, Black & Decker toasters, Toshiba laptops, and so forth... Would anyone think they were getting a bargain by paying more for the same item elsewhere?

Actually they have very similar crap, but being a club, they will buy close out items from anywhere, and then offer it to members at a huge discount. The most recent thing I can think of is, Izod shorts (the sturdy kind) for about $12. I have also purchased name brand hoodies there as well. Same means identical. I can easily identify cheap crap, but Ron has gone over that. I use drugstore.com a lot for vitimins, supplements, lubes, Doctor's prescriptions, all kinds of stuff. Good prices and you don't have to take two hours out of your day to fight the crowds and deal with traffic or parking! It's a real time saver and, time is money. It'll take you 5-10 minutes as opposed to 1-2 hours, gas for your car and wear and tear. I wear Wrangler jeans and buy those online from Sheppler's western wear as well. Also, all my shorts and some t-shirts I order online from LL Bean. Great stuff that lasts forever. Almost all my sweaters though come from Ireland. I usually buy a few everytime I go over. But, I've bought stuff online from Ireland too. I was a little sceptacle about online shopping at first but now I can't do without it! Whatever you want or need is online! I just go to yahoo search and type in whatever I need or want and you have the world at your fingertips! And you can buy in bulk and save more money that way.

ooh..I do alot of online shopping too...its kind of a pain more for women than it is for men though...men can know they have a size 32 waist and anywhere they go they can grap a size 32 and not have to worry about trying it on...for chicks..one stores size 12 can be WAY different than another stores size 12..dont ask me why it just is...but if you find some places online with good return policies its definantly worth it as long as you arent doing last minute shopping on friday afteroon for a saturday date! Jeans are pretty good online, especially if you always wear the same type..I wear wranglers also, and they are pretty standard accross the board, I know what style and size fits me well so I can order them online in whatever color or finish I want wihtout worrying if it will fit or not. Sometimes I get the kids clothes online too, but normally I buy all their play clothes at the local thrift stores. Kids consignment shops are great too....I used them for maternity clothes while I was pregnant also. Why the hell pay $40 a shirt for something Im only gonna wear for 6 months of my life?

I just came back from England and shopped at a Wal-Mart-owned grocery store/super store called "ASDA". While I'm not a Wal-Mart fan here (stores near me are filthy, messy, and understaffed), this was the opposite: clean, bright, loaded with beyond-the-basics in food choices, and plenty of checkout lanes (all staffed). Perhaps they feel they can get away with providing a substandard shopping experience here (in the U.S.).

Ghita, yeah, I love Wrangler jeans. They just look so much better than other types and they're cut to wear with boots which I wear a lot. Once you hit 30 "Levis" just don't look good. Funny, some people say they can save $4 at Walmart but they don't take into consideration the time involved, gas for the car, traffic and all the other inconveiences involved with going shopping. By the time you get done you're down -$14 plus you probably bought something else you don't really need.

ooh...exactly..except Im that way at harbor freight...I literally cant walk in there without spending $100....and there is one right next door to the all you can eat japanese buffet with really good sushi that we eat at after tuesday night cubsouts...and I always wanna go in there and look for new tools that I absolutly dont need but want anyway.... I like wranglers cause they fit my hips good...they dont pinch into my belly like alit of brands at the mall do. And the majority of the time online I can find a store that sells what I want with free shipping. jeesh...now you got me wanting to go buy a new pair of boots...sigh...only thing wrong with online shopping..ots way too easy to just whip out the card....which is another thing I hate..anyone been keeping an eye on those visa check card commercials? Its like they want you to believe using cash is just evil anymore. I do have a debit card I can and do use online, but the majority of the time i buy all my stuff and pay all my bills with cash. I walked into my auto insurance place the other day to find out they no longer take cash...what the hell???

I work at asda, the uks answer to walmart, and i was sexually assaulted by a colleague there this weekend just gone, i have put in a complaint and now feel completely shit they are victimising me, i am being forced to leave.

I tried to pay for a hotel room recently in cash - i had stayed there 5 nights and it was costing a fair bit - was a nice hotel - but they looked at me like i had just robbed a bank!!! And they wouldn't take a cheque!! So had to use my card! Oh - i've never been to wal-mart - but i am Irish, so... anyway - much prefer smaller shops - too many people in the big places - and i hate waiting in queues!!

oh I know...I always try to pay for hotels and stuff with cash and they wont let you...or rental cars or airline tickets either..I hate it....I mean what they hell..how soon is it going to be until we become a compleatly cashless society?....Id really rather not let someone else have a hand in absolutly all of my income.....
