Assuming you had to design a coat of arms for the BDSM community and you had to pick three different animal symbols to represent the roles of Dominant, Switch and Submissive, whiich animals would you pick to symbolise each role and why?

Oooooh Fun question!

Hmmm.  Well, I'm switchy and I see myself as feline (obviously).  A ferocious and powerful huntress, but submissive and downright cuddly when I meet my match.    Dominant.... wolf comes to mind.  Pack animal, with an alpha, a leader who actively commands the hierarchy, not likely to back down from any fight or submit to any authority.  Lion or bear don't have enough personality to me.  Submissive?  Hm, that is tough.  Somehow to me submissive personality varies the most greatly.  This is not an animal, but maybe a flower.  Blossoming under the right conditions, beautiful, delicate but robust, striving, flourishing.

I like this question as well!

For a switch, I'd choose a chameleon, able to change to their surroundings but creatures in their own right who, yes, actually do exist!

For a slave, I would choose a dog. Completely loyal and faithful to their owners when they are treated right. They'll guard you while you sleep, but roll over for a tummy rub when their alpha is around. They are easily trained by someone who knows what they are doing and have no problem at all wearing a collar.

For a Master, I would choose a Dragon, fire breathing, powerful, hard, legendary who will hoard the gems of submission and scorch those who would intrude in their demesne. They can grab you in their claws and take you to great heights but they can turn on you in a flash and eat you raw! Unpredictable, beautiful, mythical.. because I do find Masters to be very rare.

For a wanker, I'd choose a hen, because for them it's all about the cock. :)

Oh wait, you didn't ask that one. N/m.

Celeste

Here's what i would choose.

submissive:  sheep -- Confidence in Ones Abilities, Fertility, Courage, New beginnings, Abundance, Assurance in New Areas, Sacrifice, Breakthrough, Achievement

Dominant:  Cougar -- Using Leadership Power Wisely and Without Ego, Balancing Power, Intention, Strength, Gaining Self-Confidence, Freedom from Guilt, Cunning, Savagery, Fury, Remorseless, Hunting, Seeking of  Freedom, Coming into Your Own Power, Courage, Swiftness, Balance

Switch:  Fox -- Shapeshifting, Cleverness, Observational Skills, Cunning, Stealth, Camouflage, Feminine Courage, Invisibility, Ability to Observe Unseen, Persistence, Gentleness, Swiftness, Diplomacy, Wildness, Adaptation, Slyness, Wisdom, Protection, Provider, Intelligence.

i got the symbolism for these animals from http://onespiritx.tripod.com/magick18.htm, where there are many more listed, as well.  i highlighted the qualities that i thought were most relevent to my idea of how each of these animals could represent the three aspects of the BDSM coat of arms.  This was fun.

Interesting question.

For a submissive, I would choose a doe. I would choose a doe because they are often preyed upon and have the element of needing someone to control and protect them to be at peace.

For a switch, I would choose a dog. This is because dogs have those roles in real life. There is always submissive dogs as well as dominant dogs.

For a dominant, I would choose a cat. They definitely have the element of control and independence about them.

Dom: A spider. It waits, hunts, bites, and is into bondage and torture.

Sub: I will also have to go with a horse. It's a submissive creature. However, not just anyone can ride her. The filly only submits to strong masters that can break her. Other wise, get ready to be bucked off.

Switch: I'm thinking of a dog. They assert dominance on some but follow commands and submit to others. The pack mentality of Alpha, Beta, and such points out how a Beta will submit only to the Alpha but be dominant to the rest of the pack. Thus, you could call a beta a switch.

This is a fun thread...see what's interesting to me is the way people see different animals...to me...

Submissive - A cat.  Reason being is that while cats are independent and intelligent creatures, they only give themselves fully to someone who will appreciate that gift.

Switch - A dog.  I will agree with a couple of the other posters above.  A dog is usally Alpha or not.

Dominant - I'm having hard time with this one...so...I'll have to keep thinking for now...and add when I figure it out...

One thing that no-one has mentioned yet is that having three different animals on one escutcheon is terrible heraldic practice.  If you expand out to include a compartment, though, then you can make two of your animals into supporters.

In fact, you could make the third symbol into a crest, and then have really clean arms -- say Tierced per pall, sable, ermine, purpure.  That gets your three-divisions theme into the focal point.  If you wanted to be a little more blatant, you could replace ermine with argent hurty and get away with it, but it would be an inferior design.

Dominant - A buck.  Always butting heads with other bucks.
Submissive - A doe.  Why else would bucks butt heads?
Switch - A Jackass (donkey)  Contrary bazturds won't do what they are told.

Dominant female - Hyena - the females are the dominants for that animal
Dominant male - Lion - the females do all the work and the male lion sits and has everything brought to him, gets to eat first etc.

Submissive - Dog - they are loyal, faithful, adoring, forgiving, you can train them and they love to please their owners

Switch - i like the camelion i will steal that from celeste

(using fast reply)

Is this thread just a thinly disguised attempt to get all the SCA people to reveal themselves?

I don't have time to come up with the heraldry right now, but it's interesting to see the responses so far.  I can tell who the heraldry geeks are.  lol  Like I have any room to talk...

NChaka's amicia-- who just realized that her own masochism and interest in 'intellectual bondage' was plainly evident when she accepted becoming a Shire Herald.  ('Cause figuring that stuff out will tie your brain in knots!!)

a man with three buttocks....and here i was thinking this was a thinly disguised attempt to get all the monty python fans to reveal themselves...

there are no Dominant animals and no submissive animals...all animals have both within their species...otherwise they would have a hell of a time keeping order within themselves...

that being said...i personally feel submissive around large solitary cats...specifically leopards and jaguars...and i feel dominant around dogs and monkeys and apes...and switchy around everything else...
