My apparentment complex is in the city in university grounds. So, we have a street on all four sides. And, despite being 2 AM in a residental area for students, I still hear that loud, irritating grinding from motorcycle engines. To be honest, I keep hoping to hear one of them crash into a pole so I can have some silence; do they not care that people are trying to sleep? Are they only thinking of themselves when they get those damn things that subject anyone near them to that noise? Is it part of the thrill- to simply annoy people as they go by? Regardless of my antipathy for them, though.. if I was on a motorcycle, I think it'd drive me nuts there. Hearing the same repetative sound, loudly, constantly.. not being able to appreciate the open air nor natural sounds, just the same disgusting noise coming out of the engine that I'm sure must blot out any ability that one has to think with. And, jeeze, just what does it do to someone's hearing after a while? So, as someone who can't understand why anyone would actually want to be around that sound.. why in the world do many motorcyclists like that noise machine that they put onto those bikes?

The thing that initially attracts most people to motorcycles, is the sensation of being powerful. The fact that they are cheap transportation is secondary at best. Like loud car stereos, loud exhausts are a modern interpretation of tribal war drums. It's about intimidation and a sense of turf. There are riders who seriously believe that people in traffic around them will hear those loud pipes, and be so intimidated, that it will cause them to hang up their cell phones and make way. The annoying guy on the loud bike, waking you up at night honestly believes that when you hear those pipes, your thinking about how awesomely strong and virile he must be. Add to this the mentality of post pubescent youth and a bit of alcohol, then things like, courtesy and personal comfort become essentially non issues.

The solution to this is quite simple. Ban Harleys and only allow Japanese with unmodified exhausts (mufflers 2U) Having said that you have my sympathies. Noise is the bane of modern existence. Stupid emergency services with their loud sirens annoy me. I give 'em the finger, well the ambulances not the police. Can take protest too far lol To those who want to defend the ambulances etc, their sirens are too loud and used inappropriately. 2/3 hundred yards radius of sound is quite sufficient not a mile or so depending on the prevailing wind direction. adding: MMMud. good post and sadly thats why the problem will never go away.

Oh why they like the noise? I give you 3 guesses. hint, name 3 things that are little. I can't wait for winter here, soooo glad the peons park up their scrap metal for the season. In my hood, the polite ones push it out of the area before heading off for the weekend. Elsewhere, just piss poor men with little to say acting like noisy bighshots hiding from their weekday factory jobs.

noise is here to stay in the modern world. one way to think of it is- in the absence of abc noise- we would have xyz noise. anyhow- try a heavy window curtain, maybe white noise or those machines that do waterfalls etc. the small children ride big wheels here- that can be annoying. complaining can only make it worse. they throw out beer bottles too- not the kids but motorists.

I've been told about the loud pipes save lives thing. This from a rider who explained that people are not observant in cars to SEE motorcycles, so at least they can HEAR motorcycles. Guy tells me he can't even count all the times he has been cut off on the highway, and that is WITH loud pipes. Motorcycles are hard to see in the mirrors. So for some is it a safety issue. Others are simply assholes. If you have something loud, it is polite not to throttle up when parking at night. They have a point, you have a point. The solution ? damifino. T

Here's a situation that happen in Houston TX. A motorcycle rider was given a handicap sticker due to severe headaches. These headaches were brought on by his loud motor bike. Regardless, the guy continues to ride his bike and park in handicap zones.

My better half has a Harley and just put louder pipes on his. Not only does it make other cars more aware of him, but in our area it makes the deer run too. Getting clipped by a deer on a bike is not pleasant.

noise pollution is irritating in general. Even Mac trucks and busses have noisy air breaks that give cause and reason for the signs on city roads :no release of air break for xx miles. There is new mechanical technologies now. Just as laws that prohibit exhaust pipe damage through corrosion (they get caught by the noise it makes)the same should apply to motorcycles. Muffle it or get a new, quieter brand of bike.

loud noise can increase pain when one has pain. however- the OP, while it is healthy to vent- the bikes or noise is not going to stop. unless OP moves- or until- other options to muffle the sound. accoustics can be important. OP has a ligit complaint- and yet-the home pretty much sets on the road.

Z. oh my my... how many people run their bikes in the parking lot for hours at a time so as to cause sleep deprivation in such frequency as to cause a health concern? i'm menopausal so anything that helps with natural lubrication is a health benefit for me. loud, throaty, deep, pipes on a Harley that i can hear even in the distance gets me WET... just the sound...so for me i guess it can translate into a health benefit. To deprive me of such a natural health benefit sounds selfish to me.

First my helpful comment, buy a set of earplugs like you would wear at a gun range. Next my explanation of why folks ride motorcycles; If i have to explain, you will never understand. Now my personal comment. Put on your big girl panties and quit sniveling! Would you like it if all the bikers came on here and whined like a bunch of sissys about the type of car you drive, what kind of music you listen to? To many of us the thrum of a bike is the sweetest music on the face of the planet, i adore the growl of straight pipes. The throbbing sound of rolling thunder is a promise of freedom, brotherhood and joy to many. As many have said loud pipes save lives. Last something i got in the mail the other day, sounds like you are one of those folks who needs to read it; I saw you pull your child closer when we passed each other on the sidewalk. But you didn't see me playing Santa at the local mall. I saw you change your mind about going into the restaurant. But you didn't see me attending a meeting to raise more money for the hurricane relief. I saw you roll up your window and shake your head when I drove by. But you didn't see me driving behind you when you flicked your cigarette butt out the car window. I saw you frown at me when I smiled at your children. But you didn't see me when I took time off from work to run toys to the homeless. I saw you stare at my long hair. But you didn't see me and my friends cut ten inches off for Locks of Love. I saw you roll your eyes at our leather coats and gloves. But you didn't see me and my brothers donate our old coats and gloves to those that had none. I saw you look in fright at my tattoos. But you didn't see me cry as my children were born and have their name written over and in my heart. I saw you change lanes while rushing off to go somewhere. But you didn't see me going home to be with my family. I saw you complain about how loud and noisy our bikes can be. But you didn't see me when you were changing the CD and drifted into my lane. I saw you yelling at your kids in the car. But you didn't see me pat my child's hands, knowing he was safe behind me. I saw you reading the newspaper or map as you drove down the road. But you didn't see me squeeze my wife's leg when she told me to take the next turn. I saw you race down the road in the rain. But you didn't see me get soaked to the skin so my son could have the car to go on his date. I saw you run the yellow light just to save a few minutes of time. But you didn't see me trying to turn right. I saw you cut me off because you needed to be in the lane I was in. But you didn't see me leave the road. Tell you what, go to a few toy runs, blood drives, poker runs for various causes, go to a BACA(Bikers Against Child Abuse) meeting. Attend an event like the Boogie where 50,000 or so bikers get together for week, do not fight, share food, bike parts, whatever they have, help each other push around trailers and set up camp and enjoy each others company, where total strangers treat you like long lost family, then you come back and tell me what bikers are really like. Bikers rescued me from an intolerable and life threatening situation, not because i could give them anything, but simply because they could. Just like every walk of life, sure there are some assholes, but there are also a lot of wonderful people out there who are also bikers. Ever read any posts on here by Mistoferin, ScooterTrash, ShiftedJewel, Stockingluvr54, MasterHawg, LadyArakney, Scifi, Electraglide, LadyDiane? I could give you a list of names a few hundred long, Quite of few of which are well respected longtime posters. Know what they have in common? I yelled at the neighbor kid for midnight basketball. That got me in hot water. I explained that I did not care that they were playing basketball- but not outside my window when I was trying to sleep.

Thank you, Twicehappy2x for your excellent posts!! It is wonderful to see people whose lives are so blessed that road noise is their most pressing problem.
