Pavel -> Feeling Old. (7/31/2005 3:05:38 PM)

I turned 22 rather recently, and I think this is really the first birthday I've had that I didn't really care about/look foward to. I recognize that 22 really isn't that old (unless you're a cat or left overs), but it's like I've crossed the threshold between youth and early adulthood.

Which leads to a question, anyone else go through that kind of feeling, and if so what b-day was it that finally did it for you?

When i turned 24. Now birthdays are just a couple down the local with mates. No more big drunken pub crawls though the city which by the way we somehow always ended up in the strip clubs. Memories. Even those will sart to fade soon...

I went through it horribly at 25 but only because I was a quarter of a century old. Someone said that to me and it freaked me out. I was fine after that until 30. When you're in your 20's it's kind of like having a license to make mistakes but I felt that at 30 you weren't allowed as many anymore. For me the 20's were what tapered you down to adulthood and in your 30's it's time to buckle down and not just say you're an adult but be one too. The last time I celebrated a bday was 29, I'm 32 now, but not because I fear "getting old" but because it's just another day.

hrm, I am 26 tomarrow... so far, I've had no strange thoughts or feelings of being old, being so old or what not. I know my sister went through a rather hard time and depression dealing with her 25th birthday and again with her 30th. But, I personally havn't come across feelings like that. I love my age, I grow and learn more every year I am alive. I'm proud of it. Now.. ask me again next year. :)

I'm 50. In my twenties, I felt immortal...in my thirties, I started noticing little changes but nothing I could really put my finger on as to what they meant...in my forties, I started noticing some drop in energy levels and having the "not being the kid I used to be" sort of feelings. I've never felt my age (always younger) but recently at times have had strong feelings that I've pretty much done everything I'm going to do and now I'm just surviving till the end.

I've finished with getting a formal education, settled on a career, had my day of sowing my wild oats, done crazy and stupid things, was almost murdered twice, almost killed in accidents a few times, achieved all the things I always wanted to do when I was younger, my parents have passed away, I have enough money not to leave any debts behind, so now I guess I'm kind of bored.

I wish I was 22 again...what you don't know you have you can't appreciate until it's gone. Don't worry about making sense of it all, so go out and have a ball my friend. You may not feel it right now but you're still a kid in most respects.

Dont feel old. You feel old, and you mind starts influencing everything else.
I turned 34 just over a week ago, and I still concider myself young... which is difficult because most people I associate with are on average about 10 years younger.
No way would I want to drop back a few years. I am just now fully comfortable in who I actually am.
Live life, experiance everything you can.
Have a life worthy of reflection when you are aged.

I like the fluttery feeling- the perspective life gives you that "Yeah, you HAVE lived that much"

Hopefully it's a feeling that gives us hope and yummies for our past and not too many barbs.

SweetDommes -> RE: Feeling Old. (7/31/2005 4:10:19 PM)

For me, it wasn't my birthday that made me feel like I had left youth behind and had to be an adult - it was signing the papers for my house at the end of June.

I have had moments in the past where I felt really old (going through school for my second degree, listening to all my classmates who were just out of high school bragging about their fake IDs when I hadn't needed one for a few years ... and then again when they got their legal IDs a couple of years later), but it wasn't really related to my birthday - it was always other things going on around me. Now, for the most part, I feel quite young, because there are only a couple of people at work younger than me (although the inmates who are younger than me make me feel ... not really old, but odd - knowing that they are younger than me and won't see freedom again until they are much older than I am now - wondering what exactly it is that they got themselves into that young - that kind of thing).

KarbonCopy -> RE: Feeling Old. (7/31/2005 4:12:44 PM)

When I turned 13 I stopped caring about my birthday.

It was about that time in my life when I realized that I wasnt getting older, but I was already dead and I was just getting closer to it.

darkinshadows -> RE: Feeling Old. (7/31/2005 4:29:57 PM)

Birthdays are for celebrating, not for grieving over. Each day you get older anyway, the only certainty for most is death, and that could happen at any age. Abirthday only celebrates the year that has passed - each day you get older, each, moment and second. If you regret it, or feel old - your losing out...

Peace and Love

I am 45 and I am not old. when I was in my early 20's and had 4 children under the age of 5, I looked foward to my 40's when they would all be grwon and on their own... well I made it through having 4 teenagers (2girls) (2boys) all at the same time (lol) and now my life is my own to do with what I wish.. as I see it life has just begun for me and I don't intend to waste a second worrying about whether or not I'm old

siamsa24 -> RE: Feeling Old. (7/31/2005 5:12:37 PM)

I still look forward to my birthdays. This year we went to Niagara Falls and the zoo, and it's the only day of the year that I get to eat ice cream (real ice cream). My partner says that I get younger every birthday instead of older [:D]

30 did it for me.

quietkitten -> RE: Feeling Old. (7/31/2005 6:28:23 PM)

I am sitting on the cusp of 40 right now, and I have to admit it is bothering me. I don't think it is the age so much as I am not where I wanted to be at this time in my life.
I look ahead and see the bare fact that I will have to work full time for the next 23 years just so I can survive when I retire and it makes me feel like utter crap.
I feel very much like I have not reached my potential and it is too damn late to do anything about it. Very depressing...
The events of the last week have made me realize just how old I am and how fragile this existence is... they have also made me realize that things would continue along just fine without me here..

MstrssPassion -> RE: Feeling Old. (7/31/2005 7:01:27 PM)

I too am on the cusp of 40, but I do not 'feel' old. In fact just tonight I had an email that said that I appeared more like 18 instead of 38 & asked if it was genetics or surgery. (Genetics, clean living, healthy attitude & Florida sun.)

I would have to agree with other peoples view of myself... I do not look my age, nor do I 'feel' like a woman who is approaching mid-life.

I occasionally date myself though... felt real strange the other day when I had to explain a silly gesture to a group of teen to early 20 yr olds. I gave the thumbs up & an "AAayeeeee" & all I got was a curious look. LOL!

I think about one of those silly little nick-nak signs my Grandparents had...

We old folks know more about being young than you young folks know about being old.

Kind of makes me feel like I have the best of both worlds.

I can ride with my two teen daughters & one pre-teen son & we all agree on the radio station. They love it when I drop them off at school with the top down & the radio blarring.

Does it count if I feel old? like physically? My body feels broken lol.

perfection20005 -> RE: Feeling Old. (7/31/2005 9:31:01 PM)

I'm 38 now, but when I was in my 20's, I never believed that I would live to be 25. I already had 2 kids by the time I was 20, and I had my will drawn up when I was 21!. I feel younger now that my children are almost both 18(my son is going to be 19, and my daughter will be 18) I think I started feeling younger 2 years ago after my divorce. Its amazing how being happy can make you feel young again!!

For me it was 28; when I was looking at 30, it started to feel like the end of the world... Changed where I lived, and went through some depressing thoughts... Now I look back and want to kick myself for not seeing the beginning of my best most powerful years. M
