I do what I suggest clients do, who ask me what they should be doing.

Aerobics: Ten minute warm up--ten minute cool down, and 35 minutes in the proper "target heart rate" for their age, three times a week.

I also do nautilus and free weights three times a week.

I recommend that people who take chondroitin for joints due to cartilege problems take only certified bovine free chondroitin.  Chondroitin is derived from cow trachea.  Most argue that the purification process would remove any potential for mad cow disease (Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy--if I spelled that right).  I do not agree.  There is nothing to prevent the use of trachea from foreign sources where BSE is known to occur.  The trail of origin is not always known to manufacturers and not all manufacturers are guaranteed ethical.  I believe that chicken trachea sourced chondroitin is safe.  Bovine chondroitin certified from BSE free countries such as Argentina is probably ok.  But consider, until recently, Canada was considered BSE free--no more.

Think that such a thing could not occur--using potentially BSE sourced cow trachea?--you may be right.  But consider this.  Recently a large company in China was busted for improper processing of fats.  When fat, such as frying oil is used, it is recycled, cleaned and filtered and sold again for cooking, which is all well and good.  But this one company who sold tons and tons of recycled fats which were used in resteraunts obtained the fat to recycle from skimmed fat from sewage treatment plants.  Ignore the grossness of human waste association, but consider that used grease and lubricants, as well as chemicals such as pesticides and cleaning agents would not be removed in the recycling process.  I did some research and from my point of view--BSE contaminated chondroitin is a possibility. 

I do suggest Glucosamime sulfate.

i work out, i work in, wherever there's work to be done, there i am. Working.
But that running-in-circles, or hoisting-a-weight-only-to-put-it-back-down-then-lift-it-again stuff, that's just exercise, you know, like "exercise in futility", "exercise in frustration", etc. Gave that up years ago. Got work to do.
Can dead-lift somewhere around 300lb. Gets the job done.
And if it doesn't, i can always hypnotise 'em with the jiggling of mah belly!

I walk 40 minutes in the morning - Weights for 15 - Elliptical for 30 minutes. It took a while to get used to this routine butnow if I dont do it I miss it.

I do an hour work out in the mornings...20 minutes cardio, 20 minutes upper body strength and 10 minutes on arms and 10 minutes on legs.  I walk for an hour at lunchtime and when I get home I sometimes work out with weights.

I bike, walk, push ups and simply keep active. I do some yoga to keep flexible.

I often have problems getting motivated and my weight has gotten totally out of control over the last 8 years.
 
Does anyone have suggestions on how to truely find some motivation other than the old " got to lose the weight or die obese " type of scenerio ? [8D]
 
I've tried the local gym in my area and tried starting out gradually with walks with the dog or even on the fitness equipment that I've sunk some money into but nothing seems to work with my psyche.

Hi MissAnn,

My father used to tell me to work like hell when you dont feel like it or are sick so its easier when your feeling good----that only works if you make it work you may need to go see a Dr and tell them you cant get motivated and see what they say, you may be just a bit depressed or something also change your diet a little eat more salids and lots of water, drink 8 ozs before you eat anything---- I wouldnt try any stimulents until you go to your Dr there could be health issues you dont know about going on, take care Rushemery

To be honest, only you can motivate yourself, but you could try "I'll just work out today" and do it.  Tomorrow, tell yourself the same thing and do it.  So on and so on.  Pretty soon, you've established a regular routine.  Slow and steady.

Try to find activities that appeal to you, it may be swimming, karate, dancing -- any form ballroom, belly, western, swing , jazz etc,  sailboarding, diving , dog sledding, doggie dance whatever then sign up for lessons

crunches, push ups, yoga, tai chi, running uphill with a pack and boots on, climbing-specific training (pull ups, lock offs, grip...), stretching (This One Is IMPORTANTE !! Don't Skip It !!), leg specific machine work for skiing (abductor/adductor, some presses), lots and lots of time in the mountains...and meditate regularly, for lower stress...
I'd like to not spend so much time on it, but I'm not at the level I need to perform at just yet so I can't switch to maintenance work at the moment...besides, it keeps you sane when you are not graced with a companion to spend quality time with ;-)

your absolutely right about that!------we are going to do some cross country skiing this year if it isnt too cold, when I had time last year it was too cold to take my ums out with me or too much fluffy snow so maybe this year will be better, they still have to learn to stay up on their feet so moving to stay warm isnt an option

Miss Ann I am so glad im not alone with struggling with it.  Ive been in tears most of the weekend about my fitness or lack of it.  I seem to have hit a slump.
A few years ago I lost about 5 and a half stone part diet and excersise and part being really stupid and using speed recreationally.  Whilst I regret the drug taking I did lose loads of weight easily so becasme very complacent with eating healthily and excersising properly.  That was about 3 years ago now and im happy to say that I dont touch drugs now.  My problem is motivation.  I have just joined a really good gym in my area.  For the past year Ive eaten quite healthily in general but my lifestyle has changed so much.  Ive gone from being a single parent living alone and just eating small odd meals throughout the day to having my boy here and enjoying cooking us proper meals and eating more reguarly which in one repect iis good but in the other Ive found the more I am eating the more humgry I am.  And also ive noticed over the last few years that around my period I bringe for about 2 days before it.  I hate myself when I do it but my hunger knows no limits.  My boy is supportive and helps me where he can but will get his head bitten off if he tries to remind me I dont need the crisps lol.
I used to love going to the gym and would go upto 6 times a week, at the minute I am full of good intentions but just dont follow it through.  I know its all down to will power and I really want to get fit and lose the stone that ive gained this year. ( I swear love make you fat)
Ive put an advert out locally for a gym buddy which I think is what I really need.  I cant afford a persoanal trainer at the minute and the program they have given me is very generic and I don really like it.  Ive been trawling website for program ideas but I dont know what I am looking for.

I am hoping by posting this and seeing myself how pathertic its become I will find a bit more get up and go.  After spending the last2 days eating enough to feed a small country something defiantly needs to be done[:(]

I walk daily, sometimes several times a day.

I am currently looking into a realistic work out that I can do on a normal basis since I am now on meds that make me gain weight. [:(]

Well proud Mistress we are appearantly in the same boat, when You said that "Love makes you fat." If indeed that is true then I've gained at least 25 lbs since I met my husband 4 years ago and before that it was all due to depression mostly and medications for other medical problems.  I hear that on the eating enough food to feed a small country...I do binge eat out of pure boredom but I do believe there is hope for us both.  For the less motivated we often find comfort in excercising with a partner and I do wish you all the best on your ad that you placed to find a work out buddy for the local gym you joined. 

I've discovered that will power can only let you down, have you thought about finding a support group online to share your daily thoughts with concerning the eating thing ? I've found that when it comes down to that time before I have my monthly woman troubles that I have less of an appetite versus wanting to eat everything in sight. Sigh. This is a frustrating struggle that some/or most of us have with our inner demons. The best thing you can do for yourself is to love and yes I say love yourself and to be patient, do what you can in small baby steps but don't lose hope in finding a buddy to go to the gym with.

I take cardio kickboxing once a week and fitness boxing 2x's a week. In between classes, I workout at home w/weights and a bag. I also love to put on my ipod and go walking for hours.

I am starting back working out this week.  I have a Proform Elliptical Cross Trainer that also does strength training.  I have to work myself back to doing an hour of cardio a day on it.  Stretching, weights, resistance.... several times a week.

I was looking back at a quote that I used as my signature line when I was working out and doing Atkins....

"Dieting makes you look good in clothes.  Exercise makes you look good nekkid!"  Hahaha [;)]  [:D]
