I remember thinking this upon my first reading of book 7 - the letter from Dumbledore in that Skeeter woman's book. The line "...but then we never would have met" screamed love affair to me. I went so far as to point it out to my 17 yr old son who has been following the series since HE was 11. He dismissed it as irrelevant, but I agree with Aidan in this - Dumbledore's motivations stem from this summer when he was 17.

The psychological undertones and truths in the books are what makes them so affecting, even though they may be deeply hidden in the story. Just one of the reasons JK is so brilliant.

It's a load of crap....Why does an author have to explain themselves as to their work of fiction?...Why was it not allowed to stand on it's own merit?...It would have been of much more interest if someone ( one of you or perhaps Jerry Falwell) would have come out and said that they thought that dumbledoor was gay.

It is similar to an artist explaining a song or a painting as to what it's meaning actually is.....Then you hear that and say, "No. That is never what I saw it as." By now understanding the view of the artist the "work" has lost some meaning in the eyes of the viewer.

I think she sucks ass...It is a cheap ploy, that undermines her integrity as a writer.

J.K. Rowling is coming out with a book that will go into more detail about the backgrounds of all the characters.

Domi, I usually enjoy your posts, but I have to disagree on this one. I don't see what JKR stood to gain from this ploy. Her books are already record-breking best-sellers, and she's become fabulously rich. I honestly think she was sharing a piece of backstory that she found cool and thought readers would as well. My one regret is that she underestimated her audience's ability to handle the idea of Dumbledore's being gay. It would have been cool if she'd made it more explicit in the books.

My own honest opinion she (J.K. was just sharing something with her audience). She doesn't strike me as the cheap ploy type from seeing her interviews.

I have also heard she is writing a detective/murder mystery? Not Harry Potter related.

She has so much money why would she resort to such tactics is beyond me.

This is exactly where the problem lies....She is fabulously wealthy....She can trash the characters in her book any way she sees fit....She didn't initially have the stones to cast one of her main characters as being gay....Now that she is incredibly wealthy it matters not whether she sells one more single copy....it is a cop out at the least....Dishonest at the worst.  Or possibly a ploy to sell the "background" of her characters.....

Nancy Drew was a tranny....Jason Bourne a pedophile....The Joads were poly....After the fact, it seems a gutless comment to add after all is said and done....

dcnovice....It seems that although you took some exception to my post that you are in a round about way agreeing with me.....I think it should have been left to the reader to determine the "makeup" of a character....If the author was unable or unwilling to articulate such an understanding (how many books was she given this chance?) it suggests other motivations were definitely at hand.

I don't see her describing Dumbledore's being gay as trashing him. Far from it, actually.

Here I think you're on to something. I do wish she'd been brave enough to have an explicitly gay character in the books.

It was a poor choice of words....Too many folks the knowledge of Dumbledore's fancy for cock would be to say the least, troubling.  To others they may find some inspiration....It is a work of fiction...Dumbledore can't sue her for libel or defamation of character....It is all nonsense....It speaks poorly of the author whatever was the basis for her motivations.

I find it awful that she didn't have the guts to honestly portray one of her characters accurately....Now that she is wealthy what is the difference?....Did you know that Harry Potter regularly purchased soiled panties on-line?

No need to go online. He'd just use the Accio charm.

Being gay myself, I'm one of those others. I do think it's cool to have one of the most beloved characters in one of the most beloved book series of our time turn out to be a fellow homo. One of the talking heads in the movie Celluloid Closet said, "We are pathetically starved for images of ourselves," and I suppose my enthusiasm over the orientation of a, yes, fictional character is proof of that.

I'd probably say sad rather than awful, but I see your point.

Fun little tidbit from Andrew Slack of the Harry Potter Alliance:

While the anagram to "Tom Marvolo Riddle" is "I am Lord Voldemort," as my good friend pointed out, "Albus Dumbledore" becomes
"Male bods rule, bud!"
