If people don't want to make a good first impression,  can't be bothered to proof-read or to spell check, then I cannot be bothered to read it either.
It's about making the effort. If you're not going to take the extra minute before you meet me, then what should make me think you'll put in the effort after you meet me?

Just a random question/ thought. Recently while perving a few Dominant’s profiles, I happened to notice, the spelling was awful. I couldn't help but notice, it was that bad ( not one or two hard to spell words here I am talking simple words a 5th grader should know) the other part of this too is, if you are a Dominant, wouldnt spelling be important? Do you think it matters?
Do you think it reflects badly and would you try and politely correct the spelling mistakes?
Does it really make a difference? If you are supposed to be the one in control wouldnt that have a negative light? Since this is a way to meet people, doesnt the profile make the first impression for you?

I corrected the above text it still has far too many commas and general mistakes though. There is always some idiot floating about to point out mistakes. Ideas are more important than the way they are presented.

ya know...i've spent a great deal of my life reading my older brother's writing....he has the IQ of a 2nd grader because he has Down's Syndrome...and he can get his thoughts and ideas and feelings across just fine phoneticaly even if its not spelled anywhere close to "right"....and ya'll are harping on some petty bullshit....be glad for the high level of  grammar and spelling skills that ARE on these boards....

I think we are in agreement on this - what is being said is far more important that how it is spelt. If i find something interesting and i can understand the spelling then who cares if its not perfect. There is more going on in the world!!!

Just an observation - if someone is bad at spelling or is dyslexic then spell check probably won't help because firstly they probably don't realise the word is spelt wrong and also if their spelling is really bad then spellcheck won't recognise what it is they are trying to say - even if you would know by looking at it...i have a friend who had this problem using predictive text on his phone!!

Hi

Somebody has posted that a spellchecker is of no help to a dyslexic ... well ... that's patently untrue.

Do you have dyslexia then? Since you say this is untrue? I do and I am saying that it is so. Surly some will have use of it, but many dyslectics will not have any use of a spell check program. Even if they do not load their program whit their errors

Yup this is true, i have dyslexia too and its an inability to see that the words are spelt wrong, if you use a spell check you may replace them with other words that are spelled correctly but mean a totally differant thing. I think on profiles its more important (and i remember on my original profile i misspelled something and all i got were messages correcting me) i wouldnt like to be corrected on the boards and stuff as i am dyslexic it just comes off as patronising!
i wish you well

bostontwo -> RE: spelling (10/23/2007 1:34:31 PM)

Spelling matters. I'm bound to respect someone a lot more if he or she is able to spell correctly. If the person is at least understandable, that's acceptable, but spot-on spelling and grammar is hot.

astarri -> RE: spelling (10/23/2007 1:46:24 PM)

I am not sure why i would care if someone can spell accurately or has all of their commas in the right spot ...and heaven forbid using elipses improperly. Spelling matters to me personally because i like to spell properly but that doesn't mean that i am going to go around correcting others. I can understand them and that is the important issue. and when it matters ...i am certain to use capitals and proper grammar something that definitely goes by the wayside for me online. I know a Dom who makes intentional spelling errors just to find the people that get their panties in a knot about it.

RosesHaveThorns -> RE: spelling (10/23/2007 3:43:23 PM)

I am also dyslexic, and pretty badly so when it comes to spelling or figuring out which words go where. So I tend to not care(If I can even notice typing errors, an unexpected perk of my dyslexia) if I see a few sprinkled on a post. Sometimes it's a heated discussion, or you don't have ten minutes to look over a two sentence response.

However, I would think a little more effort should be put into a profile, it's a first impression.

I also try to be patient with anyone who did not learn English as a first language, and not point out anything unless they ask me to. However, as has been stated in another thread, it is nice to at least try with another language and use the spell check and such, even if a few words here and there are not quite right. That, however, depends on the person, and how much they know of English.

However, as I have played online video games, I have seen native English speakers connect words in such a way as to be utterly incoherent. It was like talking to a spam bot, except I knew it wasn't because it kept trying to take the loot. If I cannot read your post and the reason that your post is hard to read is that you are lazy, then I skip over it.

I agree with you 100% chellekitty. Both my grown daughters have learning disabilites due to an inherited disease from their biological father. Neither one of them can spell worth a damn, and spell checkers do not help them one iota. You have to be able to have the gist of the word, before spell checks will work. Otherwise you get, umpteen variations, or the words: "did you mean this?" My oldest still asks me how to spell words. As for myself, most of my posts do not have spelling errors, that is cause I have OCD. It drives me crazy when I have spelling errors. But others, it doesnt bother me. I can read anything anyone types. One thing i do when i read and come to a word that is mispelled, if it isnt close to what it should be, and I'm not sure what is meant, then I read the rest of the sentence to get the meaning. I was taught the same thing for unfamiliar words in a sentence when I was in school. What a person is like is of more importance to me then their spelling.

SeeksOnlyOne -> RE: spelling (10/23/2007 5:06:07 PM)

i think, if you had a clue how many folks you interact with daily that cant spell or read, it would amaze you.

this is a medium that you cant hide such a thing on.....but as long as they try and dont do the  how r u crap, and they have valid points to make, it really doesnt bother me

slavegirljoy -> RE: spelling (10/23/2007 6:06:04 PM)

If spelling is so important to you, shouldn't you make sure your own spelling is correct?  Isn't it a little hypocritical to be complaining about the spelling of others, without first making certain that your spelling is right?

 i don't recall seeing spelling or grammar listed as being options on the "Interests" lists on CM profiles.  Maybe it should be, since there seems to be a fair number of people who have a keen interest in them.   As for me, i have never had any reason or desire to give a spelling or grammar test to anyone i was considering being intimate with, whether in BDSM or not.  It's unimportant to me whether the man i am submitting to is a good speller or not.  It has absolutely no bearing on whether i feel a desire to submit to Him or not.  It does matter to me that He can express Himself clearly so that i know what He is saying to me.  Master David sends me wonderful emails and notes on instant messenger that are not grammatically flawless but, they melt my heart and i treasure them.  i would never think of correcting what He writes to me. If He needed to write a business letter or something, He would have me type it for Him and i would use the tools available to correct the spelling, grammar and, punctuation to make sure it was right.  Other than that, i have no interest in how He spells the words He writes to me.  i'm just happy that He writes to me. slave joyOwned property of Master David

I happen to be dating a Dom who can't spell a damn thing.  His profile makes me crazy, still waiting for permission to get in there and fix it...
BUT, what I know, being exposed to many talented and gifted individuals(TAG) is often, they are the very worst spellers.  Frankly, I'd rather be with a creative, distracted genius than a person who can spell well.  Trust me, they think of the coolest things to do to you! [:D]

Bella1965 -> RE: spelling (10/23/2007 7:42:48 PM)

G'evening all:

chellekitty. It's a signature. It's meant in humor. Something you obviously lack.

It's not part of my regular post. If you check the body portions of all my posts, profile and journal? You'll see proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation used. (Unlike yours.) If you'd like to start a separate thread about toy maintenance, take your snarks elsewhere. I know more about such than you ever will and we'll leave it at that.

Stay safe, play nice, & share your toys w/ others....
