Smarter people tend to be those better at things in general.  A smarter person is more likely than a less intelligent person to have particular common skills, such as spelling.  Therefore, while it's entirely plausible for a genius to have wretched spelling, or for a retarded person to have pretty fair spelling, there's a statistical corelation.

Point being, if you see someone who spells below par, it's probable that their intelligence is sub par.  I've seen a lot of people saying the "It doesn't matter, because that's not always true!"-sort of thing, but, meh.  It does matter, if you care to spend your time on an arbitrary individual, why not spend them with an otherwise-arbitrary person who is likely to be have more intelligence?  (Assuming intelligence is your thing.)

So, yeah.  Spelling matters.  I'm typically one of the first to knock it as a zero-order mental feat, largely being little more than memorization, but, hey, even that's indicative of some sort of mental proficiency.  The grammar accompanying that spelling can be argued for as a first-order feat, so the two together can be telling.

PS-
One should also keep in mind that some people use spell check, so perfect spelling cases- those cases which, despite length, lack typos or so- might be tossed as not actually an indication of spelling but use of a program.

Aceton -> RE: spelling (10/24/2007 12:28:25 AM)

I don't know if it is so much spelling as word choice, and the thoughts that are expressed with those words. Sure, if the spelling was overtly terrible that would be pretty offputting, but a correctly spelled one line profile saying something like "Want to fuck bitches" wouldn't be terribly attractive either. Then again, come to think of it, I see relatively few badly spelled long profiles, and many horrific short ones. Maybe stupid people not only lack the ability to spell correctly, but they also don't have much up there when it comes to creativity and the expression of it?

Yours in superficial judgement,
Aceton

Also keep in mind...Plenty of people in any internet medium post in such a way that I can't understand what they are saying at all. And I'm fluent in English, I assume the other person is if they come from a english speaking country and don't mention not being fluent...But I can't make heads or tails out of some of these posts. It's hard to judge intelligence of someone else if they don't make much more sense then a gibbering monkey.

heartcream -> RE: spelling (10/24/2007 1:54:00 AM)

I kinda like when someone cant do the typing thing that well. I think it can be pretty hot to type for your man. I would say, it does not always mean someone is not smart if they cant type out something very well.

I do like a man who can wield a keyboard though. That is hot too.

Celeste43 -> RE: spelling (10/24/2007 4:04:04 AM)

I don't understand those who say that if their posts are unclear, ask them about it. I rarely do that because it is just rude. I can't imagine having someone come back and tell you that your post is incomprehensible is going to make anyone feel warm and fuzzy. So I don't bother reading their posts.

However, small spelling errors and grammar mistakes do not interfere with comprehension, unless you're a panda.

As for those who assume that spelling equals intelligence, nonsense. There is more than one type of intelligence. People can be math minded but not spelling oriented. Artistically brilliant but not good at math, and so on.

And there are learning disabilities that primarily focus on spelling. There is such a thing as a spelling exemption.  My oldest qualifies for it and her IQ is 138, she's in one of the top 20 universities in the nation.

Thank you, Celeste, I couldn't agree more. I know a lovely man who is a relatively famous psychologist. Intensely intelligent, extremely interesting and learned, but he can't spell worth snot. His vocubulary is tremendous (I feel like I need a dictionary when we speak) and his mind is amazing. His brain is too busy doing other things to worry about spelling. He pays people to spell for him when it's necessary.

To those who put a lot of stock in spelling and grammAr, you are most likely missing out on someone you'd really like if your bizarre spelling ego weren't teetering on its totter.

nephandi -> RE: spelling (10/24/2007 5:29:30 AM)

Hi

i have above average intelligence and i make many spelling errors, it do not have anything to do whit how smart a person is. The way a person speak, how they express them self however is an indication of how intelligent they are, not whatever or not they make errors in spelling and grammar.

i wish you well

Bingo!  The neato part is that he doesn't do it to impress me either, but yeah, several times in a conversation I can be heard asking what something means.   Sometimes.. it's super hot cause what something means gives me a clue what we might do next....
oh dear!

I think this is cool  What you discribe I think is the best of all worlds  You have the discovery of two people bonding into one on a lot levels.  He leads she fallows and yet they are equal.  cool cool

chellekitty -> RE: spelling (10/24/2007 8:10:30 AM)

So you think spelling is what makes you smart?  Dr. Howard Gardner would beg to differ and Moddy Leven has cautioned me about C&P stuff from websites so i am going to provide one link to a brief intro to his Theory of Multiple Intelligences and if you are interested in reading further there are plenty of results from a google search and he has a book on the topic....i didn't read too far down the list, but i liked this page out of what i did read... http://www.indiana.edu/~intell/gardner.shtml

chelle
wow...thats a big run on sentence...oh well...

Just a random question/ thought. recently while perving a few Dominant profiles, i happened to notice, the spelling was awful. i couldn't help but notice, it was that bad ( not one or two hard to spell words here i am talking simple words a 5th grader should know) the other part of this to is, if you are a Dominant, wouldnt spelling be important?Do you think it matters?

While I don't make such an enormous deal out of spelling and such, I think style and grammar are the dress of thoughts online. It's important to express yourself clearly and intelligently...it's a reflection of your thinking in pixel text land.

MsPleasure -> RE: spelling (10/24/2007 9:05:59 AM)

It's a definite turn-off for me.  But, on second thought unless I need him for writing skills it should'nt matter.

divi -> RE: spelling (10/24/2007 9:10:50 AM)

lol..bad breath and stinky people would be a turn off.. I'm not as harsh on others with spelling.

chellekitty -> RE: spelling (10/24/2007 9:12:39 AM)

not knowing the difference between a noun and a verb and an adjective and an adverb is a much bigger turn off than spelling or grammar.....

elfie -> RE: spelling (10/24/2007 9:24:43 AM)

Wow and all this just because of a random thought process. Thank you to the ones who corrected my original post. Needless to say, i would NEVER do something stupid as tell someone they have too many spelling mistakes in their profile, the only person i would correct would be a friend if i happened to notice the mistake. Dyslexia and english as a second language are all valid reasons its laziness that gets annoying.  However interesting to see everyones take on the issue. LOL gotta say never thought it would get to 4 pages either!

Spelling doesn't matter as much to me as clear communication does. If I can fairly easily discern the meaning in the missive I can overlook bad spelling and/or grammar.

quote:

Do you think it reflects badly and would you try and politely correct the spelling mistakes?

If there was a relationship established, or at least a good possiblity of one, I would probably correct some spelling mistakes.

quote:

does it really make a difference? if you are supposed to be the one in control wouldnt that have a negative light? since this is a a way to meet people, doesnt the profile make the first impression for you?

If this was a committed relationship, I would feel that my submissive's behavior reflected on me. But, if this is just a profile I am reading and there is no relationship, bad spelling wouldn't be a problem.

Much more than bad spelling and grammar, internet-speak gets on my nerves. I can't stand to read sentences like, "how r u?" or "Wud u lik 2 dominant me?"

That sort of writing just smacks of laziness - to me - and it breaks my #1 rule regarding written communication. It has to be fairly easy to decipher, or I will not bother with it.

How about "Punktuateon" ?
