Ok OK i felt it really important to say that, no i would not allow spelling to get in the way of talking to someone, but that would be talking, not typing.  (insert smart ass laugh)
ok my grammer sucks i will be the first to admit that. in all complete honesty though, i would not type to someone who i had a horrible time understanding. typos i get , mis spelled i get, but if it is soooooooo bad i cant understand even the idea that the other person is trying to express, i have to say i wont bother.

No, a quadratic equation is a second-degree polynomial equation.  You could have a higher-degree equation that can be reduced to a second-degree equation; for example, x^4+x^2=0 could be reduced to u^2+u=0 if u=x^2.

(Apologies if the powers aren't coming through superscript; I'm copying and pasting from Word, where it all looks perfect, but in here the formatting gets fucked up.  I think you know what I mean though.)

Edited add: Yeah, the powers did get fucked up in transmission.  OK, I added little caret marks (^).

My brain might be a little cheese-whizzy, but if I recall correctly, quadratics can be more than a second degree formula. :)

Maybe in lower level algebra. Personally, I wish I could get away from the damn quadratics and I'm not actually graphing anything right now (woo! applications problems in calculus!).

i'll accept that...i took algebra 1 in 7th grade, algegbra 2 in 8th grade, geometry in 9th grade...and i took 3 classes in 10th grade, 4 classes in 11th grade and 3 classes in 12th grade...didn't see the need for calculus when i could get the fuck out of highschool in that amount of time...and i only got up to trig in college, because thats the highest level that Dr. Tucker  taught...college algebra is the highest level required to get a BA...*shrugs*

i don't need someone to spell everything correctly. It becomes a problem for me when the mistakes outweigh the properly spelled words. And i'm far less tolerant of poor use of the language in general than i am of spelling in particular.

If they type like an insane gibbering monkey on acid, then yes, yes it would prevent me from getting to know them. I can't freaking understand them.

There's an infinite number of quadratic equations, my dear.

The quadratic FORMULA, on the other hand, is:

(where the equation takes the form ax2 + bx + c = 0).

While it is the case that some spelling issues don't render the text illegible, it still is a pain to read. People with poor pattern recognition and/or inductive logic skills will struggle with a heavy concentration typographical errors. Spelling becomes more of an issue when the word is less familiar to the reader or the subject matter is difficult. A serious botching of "oligarchy" is more likely to have people scratching their collective heads than misspelling "tomato". Finally, their study only covered a specific kind of typo, which is just having the letters out of order (rather akin to dyslexia), not missing nor incorrect letters.

wow I could actually read that without difficulty...however, unfortunately, most of the emails I get don't follow a similar path and if I can't understand what the heck they're saying...it's probably not going anywhere.

To me, a profile is a smile and a handshake being offered in order to connect with others. So to further the analogy, poor spelling/grammar on a profile would be hocking a loogie and scratching your parts, instead of the smile and handshake. I'm a writer/editor and I'll be happy to help if anyone would like help.

I agree that the intent of the words is more important than perfect spelling and grammar when typing quickly on thread posts. Especially on posts in the masterly master threads where they are metaphorically playing "who's got the biggest dick" at times.

If you are talking about geometry, the ONE class I managed to FAIL in my entire career as a student and still have nightmares about to this day, I swear to god I will take some of Ron's viagra and cock slap you.

While I am a great speller,  my brothers learned phonetically, so they are bad spellers. It does not make them less intelligent, we had different teaching methods.

What I cannot stand however, is laziness, pure and simple. Someone mentioned that text is the only medium online when communicating. So, one would think to put forth your best effort, right?  Well, it happens that the efforts are very weak.

Whenever I get an unintelligible email, with sentences so deconstructed I can hardly understand the intent, or worse, the use of U R 4 , etc., it irks me because I take the time to actually type out clear replies, and they do not.

While shortened speech is accepted on IMs and in texting for many people, I just feel that at a certain age, please, represent yourself with self respect. I find it hard to respect a prospective Dom, for example who sends me an email that says, Hey Red, wassup? UR so hawt. And the man is 52.

Sigh. Call me picky.

nope...an if and only if truth table is a logic thing....
in an "if and only if" statement...ie. p is true, if and only if, q is true...so the statement is logical if both p and q are true, or both p and q are false...but if either p or q is true and the other is false then the statement is illogical...here is the table...
P               Q             p q
T      +       T      =          T
T      +       F      =          F
F      +       T      =          F
F      +       F      =          T

hehe...

oh i hated geometry too, so you're safe on that one...

I dont' think that spelling is as important as some people are making out to be.  Even with spell check words can slip through for example you could spell witch and mean which, spell check only tells if you there is a word in its dictionary that is not spelled right, not if it is the right word.
For me personally there are things about someone that I like and dont' like, spelling does not have to be one of them.  One might be able to have an intelligent conversation and still not spell worth a damn, and its alright with me.  For some spelling is important, and as for the reflection of dominance, well I think that is in part determined by the person themselves.  Are they confident, are they still smart, can they converse with people and still be understood.  I do not feel that anyone should be judged by their spelling, but that is just my 2 cents.
