Is it possible for one to be both an owned submissive AND a Sadist at heart? Is it a complete contridiction in terms, or is this somewhat common?

Of course it's possible. The problem lies in trying to find one person to fulfill both of those needs. (edited to add: well for me that's the problem at least)

Submissive does not mean which end of the flogger you like to be on. Its the desire to serve and please. Some of the biggest sadists I know are slaves. LOL yep they are interesting!

While I am submissive, but not a masochist, I am a very much a sadist. It's difficult to describe or explain, but I have topped before and enjoyed providing "intense discomfort to the willing participant". I have no desire to be dominant, but I really enjoy torturing the holy hell outta someone. I look at it as "venting out some frustration". It's a cleansing process![:D]

Sure it is. One thing that hasn't been mentioned as of yet in this thread is that there are often people who will submit to one sex but ruthlessly enjoy dominating another.

It's definitely not a contradiction. You can also be a slave AND a master :) It is more common than most people think.

I'm not "owned,"but I am a submissive. I tend to prefer play with sadists, but I also feel the sadist moniker fits me as well. I enjoy seeing people in pain and inflicting pain. It's just a matter of not having the right attitude to be a successful top myself that prevents me from acting upon those desires often. If given a sub that wouldn't fight back much and an implement (or ten), I think I could be fairly cruel. But it doesn't mean I'm not submissive still.

being a sub and being a "bottom" are 2 very different things in my opinion you could be a sub and be an S&M top... though its probably less common (just because logically, a sub/bottom dom/top fits the "personality type" more)

I don't think that being a sadist has much to do with being in control. I wouldn't be surprised if many subs like to be the sub that's acting out or behaving badly (But still within the terms of the scene, of course). I wouldn't be surprised if a few didn't mind making the top/dom WORK for taking the sub, either. And just as there are switches, there can be people who like being at both ends of the lash. Not to mention people who are sadists, but don't feel the need or have the drive to be dominants.
