Celeste43 -> I hate apple butter (10/28/2007 1:33:47 PM)

I hate quartering half a bushel of apples.
I hate simmering them all damn day until fully soft.
I truly hate spending three hours running them through a food mill
I hate cooking the damn stuff until thick and having it boil up suddenly and burn you.
I hate how the entire kitchen gets filled with pots and pans.

And I especially hate teens who will eat half a damned jar on one sandwich.

I'm still at the boiling thick stage, skimming and stirring for hours. Tomorrow will probably be the canning stage. Followed by doing it again in a few days when I've recovered because they go through it so fast.

Simple! If they are your teens, put them to work!

dcnovice -> RE: I hate apple butter (10/28/2007 2:21:15 PM)

Possibly dumb question: Do they sell apple butter at the supermarket?

pahunkboy -> RE: I hate apple butter (10/28/2007 2:26:07 PM)

-a shampoo. it is like a henna rinse.? or apples and oranges.  at least you KNOW they are apples-nearly all prepared apple juice now comes from China- based on how safe they are- maybe a crate will be shipped to the white house.

ownedgirlie -> RE: I hate apple butter (10/28/2007 2:48:49 PM)

Make apple pies and cobbler instead.  Much easier!

And I agree with RosesHaveThorns - put the teens to work.  I have great memories of griping in my grandmother's kitchen, helping her make jam and applesauce.  I grumbled back then, wouldn't trade those memories for the world, now.

ownedgirlie -> RE: I hate apple butter (10/28/2007 4:45:43 PM)

LOL LeMis, it's definitely an acquired taste.  I learned to like it.  Homemade stuff is always better than store bought, though.

LeMis -> RE: I hate apple butter (10/28/2007 5:01:40 PM)

Ok, I will take your word for it, lol....  [;)]
boiled peanuts and grits are also aquired tastes, lol...  [:D][:D]

I would have but one is in college and the other spent the day working, his first day at his first job. Last year he ran the food mill, today it was all mine.

Yes they sell it in stores, along with commercial peach jam, strawberry jam and sour cherry jam. But here, they eat only the homemade kind, and also only the homemade chocolate almond biscotti which I did Friday. That the oldest usually helped with. Although if she were making it, half the batch was without almonds since she doesn't much like them. She prefers baking; pumpkin pie, key lime pie, chocolate chip cookies, cheesecake.

How can you hate apple butter?!?!?!

my freshman year in college i went to a school that had an apple festival (they no longer had apple trees or  produce apples anymore but tradition! tradition!)
they had apple butter, apple popcorn, apple fritters, apple cotton candy, apple candles, apple cookies, apple tarts, apple cobbler, apple pie, apple empanadas, bobbing for apples, roasted apples, fried apples, apple sauce....

Damocles809 -> RE: I hate apple butter (10/28/2007 10:11:12 PM)

And apple butter hates you.

pahunkboy -> RE: I hate apple butter (10/30/2007 5:38:32 PM)

How did it turn out?

batshalom -> RE: I hate apple butter (10/30/2007 5:43:41 PM)

Omg. Celeste! If I were there, I'd help you. I love that kind of thing - right up my alley. I also love the process of canning vegetables, from picking and preparing down to the actual canning. (I grew up in a very rural area.)

pahunkboy -> RE: I hate apple butter (10/30/2007 5:48:12 PM)

Mom tried to can peaches one year.

they molded in the jar.   lol  ooooooooopz

nyrisa -> RE: I hate apple butter (10/30/2007 6:36:40 PM)

I can sympathize with the feeling. The process sounds incredibly labor intensive. If you compared the labor you put into the task, with what the hours of your time are worth, it would probably equal some incredibly expensive apple butter, and you'd be way money ahead to store buy it.

However, if you factor in the memories your kids will have in the future, every time they taste apple butter from anywhere else, and remember you making it for them, I think it is probably the best value in the world. This time of year, the scent of apples, the taste of apple butter, all will keep your presence vivid for them, and for your grandkids, in the stories they tell of "back when I was a kid". Truly, Celeste, what a terrific legacy you are making!

leeennui -> RE: I hate apple butter (10/30/2007 10:39:33 PM)

ugh...I can attest to a bit of dislike towards the stuff...the place I used to work at in high school used to sell it, and I would be one of the lucky people who had to clean it up after the customers made a mess as they always do... *shudder*

HotFaerieMama -> RE: I hate apple butter (10/31/2007 12:00:53 AM)
