Talking with a friend about the power of music and its evocative qualities... what do you prefer when you scene? Silence? If music, what sort? Any thematic favorites? Anything that irrevocably represents (insert entity/event/emotion/obscene act here) to you?

I would like some soft music, but it is usally silence, as MADAM prefered it that way. I will have to see what the next Mistress wants.

Enya, Yanni, or even Nine Inch Nail's "Closer." I like a wide spectrum of music, depending on the mood; sometimes something intense and dark, but usually without words and kind of mellow. Sometimes words distract but mellow music is soothing and enhances the whole experience. It makes me think about being taken and thoroughly overwhelmed physically and emotionally. I think music is a must. I love being blindfolded while it's playing. I can really relax, let myself go, and get into the whole thing relatively quickly with the right music in the background. It should set the tone and mood of the scene, imo.

NIN can do alot for me. But so can many songs that envolve sex and or domination. However, anything with a good beat can work for me. Classical/Orchristra can be nice but also a bit on the difficult side if you are seeking a rythem or beat to go with as the tempos and such have drastic changes. As for now, I'll work with anything but the Ocrchistra music of the Matrix. It was play so many times at the 2005 Houston HPEP Ball that I don't care to ever hear it again. My best advice is to work with music that can put both of you in the mood. I do find it true that music has power. Otherwise, it woudn't be so popular. If you would like to further explore the power of music, I suggest that you begin researching the topic "Music Therapy"

Great Question:) The Samutopian Guardian (incorrect spelling)? had a great article years ago by some-fellow named Deviant something, it's been awhile, my memory fails me,,,
but the music i did buy! And use often....it was "Banco De Gaja-Last Train To Lasa" taped in Tibet awesome stuff. Heavy beat, then the trains, lots of variations. Excellent whipping music, warm up cool down, etc. 2 cd set. Robert Rich, "Stalker". And "Loop Guru" duniya.
without words....otherwise too distracting. Sometimes silence is best. i think i like daytime silence and nightime music...jury is still out

I prefer florentine styles when I scene. My preferences run towards music that creates a dark, heavy mood, with a good beat that allows for a lot of switch-ups and style changes. Some of the best music I've found is by Alan Parsons Project. The first half of "Tales of Mystery and Imagination" and the song "Lucifer" make an excellent combo that compliments my florentine styles.

On the other hand, I like to experiment with music in scenes. I have been known to scene to ZZ Top, The Cherry Poppin Daddies, The Heavy Metal Soundtrack, Peter Wolf, The Ramones, Gregorian Chant, and even ABBA.

I want to do some florentine to bluegrass someday soon and have worked out several song combo's in my head for it, but bluegrass is a hard limit for syn, LOL.

Music can be a great tool for both setting a desired mood in a play session and even during training. Music can help evoke a wide range of responses and when used in combination with some thoughtful planning can help set the stage for a more intense play session. For example, want to experiment with a form of play that is dark and edgy in tone such as forced play, try dark or gothic music... could be anything from a mood movie sound track to gothic funeral dirges or anything else you can think of that fits that mood. Want to do an intense flogging session with a fast pace that leaves you both with your hearts pounding, consider some techno dance track or similar music with a driving beat. A variety of sexually charged music can add a new dimension to a good ole fuck session.

Want to really go over the top, consider using lighting and scent in combination with the music.

I haven't really used music in a scene, but always thought NIN would be something that would get me in the mood. The music of NIN has always had a dark quality that I enjoy. Recently, I had a band called Muse ("Absolution") playing in the background and went into a spontaneous scene with my sub while he was sitting on the couch. I really felt driven by the music.

I'm not sure I would purposefully put scene music on, but having something on that I know my sub and I both enjoy when I get a bit spontaneous with play seems to work well.

Be well,
Julie

I prefer music, but my owner prefers silence, so its been years since I have scened to music. I used to love this cd by Peter Gabriel, but I can't remember the name of it. I can't even remember the titles its been so long.

best regards,

Wasn't "Shaking the Tree" which had "Sledgehammer" on it was it?

I love music when I play, but the type of music is entirely dependent on the mood I wish to create. Mostly, I enjoy heavy industrial, KMFDM, Skinny Puppy, etc., but I have played to blues, classical, native american drums, basically anything in which I can find a good "groove".

Rap and country music are hard limits for me, if I understand the term correctly... }:D

One of the things that sparked this was my musing about The Servant's "Cells", which can be heard in the trailer to Sin City (starting from Hartigan on the pier). It makes me feel very slinky and secksay and prone to things like strip teases (which is a little freaky, since I can't dance)...

I hear NIN referenced a lot, which actually surprises me slightly - no DePeche Mode?

What about "ironic" music, like pretty much anything from E-Rotic or Lords of Acid? Too distracting, or helps to maintain the mood?

Would you use cues from something nominally considered a kid's movie, like Shrek or Chicken Run?

No, I just looked it up. It was Peter Gabriel's "Passion" cd. I discovered it when they were playing it at Sanctuary of a Dark Angel in Atlanta, and it was always my favorite. I also like to play to some of Concrete Blonde's stuff..."Bloodletting" in particular.

Music is definately a great addition to the scene. The type of music used depends on the mood desired. If it is a hard, high impact type of play, give me Lords of Acid, Techno and that sort. If it is soft rope intensive sensation play break of the enigma or Sarah McLaughlin.

Depends on the gameplan. If it's just to have music on, it's typically something in the Harry Connick Jr/Sarah McLaughlin (McLachlan? I don't know) vein. If it's to drown out noise, it can be anything from Atomic Fireballs to Dead Kennedys...

We both had a rule, though. No NIN, ever. So that worked out nicely.
