Based upon what I know of the cities in question and your requirements, I would say The Twin Cities.

Personally, I detest the very idea of living in a city, for the most part. However, I have visited a few on the list. Minneapolis/St Paul is reasonably priced, relatively clean, had a thriving cultural base, great high end shopping and restaurants, theatre, museums, etc. It is great for the outdoor enthusiast. Good public transportation. All in all, I think it is a pretty awsome place to visit.

I just don't want to live in a city, especially a city that has a longer winter than my little farm does.

Santa Fe - it is beautiful!  Weather is grand summer and  winter.  Good Luck in your search, and eventual choice!

i have lived in Southern California for 44 of my 48 years...If you are looking for variety you can't beat it! The beach, the mountains and the desert are all with a few hours of each other. The only other place i lived was Cincinnati, OH from age 9-12 and i loved the woods there..but can't remember much else and the weather was too hot and humid...yuck!

Chicago

we have public transportation (until they cut routes on Sunday and raise fares) to take you north, south and west of the city, housing is not cheap (depending on which yuppie-fied neighborhood you live) a studio could run you at least $1100 plus deposit, high-end shopping - we have the Mag(nificent) Mile actually the street is called Michigan Ave ...high shops to browse or go to Water Tower Place ...lots of other malls around time - we have a Macy's on State Street, local cultural events and museums, plenty of places to eat and hear live music ...there's always something happening here.

I used to live about an hour or so south of Chicago in the suburbs and haven't visited the other choices on your list, so I'd go with sambasis's answer... or move over here in So Cal with me and playfulotter?
