Do you think this life style is getting more known, and if so why?

EmeraldSlave2 -> RE: Do you think this life style is getting more known? (8/3/2005 11:43:26 AM)

I think bdsm and S&M are becoming more and more "mainstream" and "pop-culture" and becoming fairly accepted (as much as any deviant sexuality is).

I think the "lifestyle" is becoming more known as more and more people gain access to the internet and munch groups and conventions continue to flourish so information and connections are far more widely accessible than before.

We are all opening up to the point where we can realize who we are and let ourselves and our sexuality grow.

As society grows and opens up to more and more we can all learn more about who we are.
I just hope it doesnt become a trend.

In many ways it already is. Such is the nature of all sub cultures. Let them do what they do.

In addition to the easier access to information that the internet provides, I think societal oppression is bringing in the curious.

The more right-wing-christian leaning the government takes, the more the "subversive" or "revolutionary" subcultures take hold.

I like your answer Wesnesday.

Wednesday's reply is what I also believe has happend. The internet has brought it out of the shadows. The books out on the market and accress to munches and more people, have brought this out to the forfront. It will only get more known and gather more individuals. I think it is strating towards being a trend. I find that disconcerting.

Respectfully,
sultry

I do not think so - but I do think there is more acceptance and a willingness to understand - so more people are able to step forward and say 'I am kinky, and proud'. Plus laws that were ultra ridiculous are starting to waver and be made null and void - unfortuantely the ultra conservative and religious fundementalists are trying to add more and increase censorship to stop the enevitable... which they will be unable to do.

What about your views?

Peace and Love

much like the gay community by the early 70's---perhaps folks are tired of being labelled mentally ill and breaking antiquated "laws".

Oooo yes I forgot about that. The idea that I have an illness just because I have learned how to regulate my own impulses so that I am NOT a danger to myself or others just bugs me.

nella -> RE: Do you think this life style is getting more known? (8/4/2005 2:44:58 PM)

there are many pepole that i could show up in a collar in the home of and they would only look at me a bit funny and think nothing more of it. So yes, i peronaly think it is getting more known and acepted, but it has a long way more to go.

I wonder about that. I wonder if its because a person is getting so much more immersed in bdsm, that they would see bdsm references in everything. its a bit like keeping an eye out for, say, VW bettles. after a while you will tend to see them everywhere.

having said that, I see people such as that girl out of the osbornes wearing corsets on a chat show, say "oh, I always wear corsets" to one of the girls at work wearing a rather racy corset cum top affair as a fashion item.

Remember, Jay Wiseman (author) reckons its only 10% to 12% of the western population that is somewhat into bdsm. (anecdotally) - thats an awful lot of people.

sub4hire -> RE: Do you think this life style is getting more known? (8/4/2005 4:58:19 PM)

I'm not sure. I would agree more and more people are finding kink via chat rooms. People are lonely, many without adequate social skills to meet people. They find chat rooms. Learn there is a "lifestyle" out there that isn't what they have been living.

However, that doesn't mean these same people are getting offline and actually taking hold of the lifestyle and living it.
So, I guess I'd have to say yes people are learning about kink. Yet living it...I'm not so sure.

More tolerance in some communities. Family wise, I am not sure how my family would react to this side of me. Most likely shock but I am pretty sure they would get used to it.

Until I started going to munches and meetings I was pretty lost about who I was. Thank God for the internet.

I realized we had arrived when they had sado-masochistic fetish women in Dungeon Keeper.

Edited to add: Oh, and when Tony Soprano's sister said her boyfriend bottomed from the top.

I can remember years ago when the first “Adult Shops” were opened in Perth Western Australia, and the regular police raids and then the owners gaining legal status due to the fact they were providing a service for the disabled.. Things have gone a long way since then. Much I thing has been due to a widening on what is acceptable to the mainstream regarding sexuality and religion. Certainly the Net has played a part in this with more and more good sensible information being available for the general public. The greatest danger comes from the fundamentalist fanatics.

nella -> RE: Do you think this life style is getting more known? (8/5/2005 2:07:55 AM)

many sub cultures use corsets, for example goths, a goth girl i kow can not get enough of them and wear them, quite proudly in public. And as soon as i loose some weight i am getting one to and i plan to wear it in public, but that has nothing to do whit BDSM.

Why wait Nella? That is what a corset is designed for. Women have been wearing them for literally centuries. How do you think the women of the 50's got those hour glass figures? The woman who had a 10 inch stomach? You wear the corset gradually tightening it and your vital organs gradually make adjustment.
Corsets were not designed for skinny women...they look odd on a person with zero breasts anyway.

Of course...if you use corsets and think of them as being kink it has been around for centuries as well.

It seems alot of people here tend to think that this lifestyle is becoming more "mainstream" but Id like to differ. I dont really see it as being mainstream. Maybe more people are experimenting with some light bondage, ie handcuffed to the bed or whatnot but I dont think most people would understand the full scope of "BDSM". Power exchange and what it is like for a sub/slave to give himself/herself over completely to a Dom/me. Alot of women would look at it as oppression of a woman (Im speaking from a Dominant straight Male's p.o.v.) and her right's.

Perhaps its that we are on the inside of the circle looking out that it seems BDSM is more commonplace but if you were to take yourself out of that circle, would it not seem that this lifestyle is kept behind closed doors rather than out in the open.

Just my $.02.
