So...since I have such a terribly common given name (Sarah), I've been kicking around the idea of a scene name. It's been something I've pondered off and on for nearly a year, and it may not even end at being used for the scene.

So, an opinion poll: How acceptable is it to take names from other languages? Does it come across as contrived? Having fairly limited experience with scene names in general, I'm not sure where to go from here. I have one in mind - my Sweetie came up with it for me - but I want to think on it a bit more before I go public with it.

i think your real name is very pretty but if you want to take another name for fun i'm sure there is no set way to come up with one. Pick something you like and will respond easily to.

Maybe wait to be named by a future D type? Just a suggestion.

It is definitely something that you should think about and should say something about who you are.  Doesn't matter what language it is in, sometimes it makes it even more interesting!!  i have had the experince in the past where my Master named me such a wonderful name, but it was in a different language.  It was always so exciting to tell what it meant and how he arrived at naming me with it.

i of course had a scene name before i had met my ex dom and after we broke up did not know what to do.  Do i go back to another name, do i go back to my original scene name?  it was very difficult.  When i went back to all my friends i just played it by ear and listed to how each of them truly identified with me.  Needless to say,, i have gone back to my original scene name.  Pick something wonderful and meaningful to you... likelihood is it will stick with you for a long time to come!!  Enjoy your journey and my it always be an exciting one!

well... octavia has been my "alter ego" for many years, so it just seemed natural for me to use it here as well.  I guess for me, I just have my given name and oct, I use them both rather interchangably.  Personally, I love your given name and would not hesitate to use it.  It is a very feminine, soft, compelling name....

cheers!

I appreciate all the compliments on my name. I do like it, and wish it weren't so common. It's getting to be a bit trying when I attend parties and such, though, as it's nigh inevitable that there's more than one Sara/Sarah/Sierra/etc in attendance, and I feel the need to respond each time I hear it.

Has anyone found any awkwardness in presenting a scene name afterwards - changing one's name can be a bit strange, I'd think.

one big piece of advice. Choose something you would not mind hearing screamed accross a crowded mall while shopping for christmas presents with family members. If you stay with the name for long, guarenteed its gonna happen eventually.

*snicker* Oh, I'm accustomed to embarrassing names. My high school nickname was Jugs - take a wild guess. I've pondered changing my name multiple times over the years, for many different reasons - this just finally seems to make sense.

I really appreciate all the support I've gotten here - this is a great community, and I'm grateful that my Sweetie talked me into an account!

I know lots of people. I don't know anyone who uses "Sarah". I think that's a perfectly good name.

Master Fire - who changed her legal name to match her scene name better (last name is now Kindle)

My first kink party had another Sarah and a Tara. I graduated with five other Sarahs in a rather small class (less than 90). My two best friends are named Sarah, and I live with one of them. *chuckle*

Well, at least I have a song.

*moseys off, singing "Sara" by Jefferson Starship*

my given name is rather common, Mistress has given me the scene name razi, it means secret treasure, i love it and do not care that most do not understand it....i do not look like a razi. As far as interesting uses, i had registered at an adult boutique under my scene name and was put on a call list for upcoming events. i received a call at work asking to speak to razi, hestitated a bit, before replying, this is razi.....seemed strange. my coworkers also look puzzzled.

I think taking names from other languages only sound contrived and foolish if the name doesn't fit the person.  Names chosen in English do the same and when you add going outside your mother tongue for it it just enhances it.

But if it fits you and you're comfortable with it?  Then it'll flow and seem natural to those that know you.

I know some have been a little odded by my own over the years and it's English, but after knowing me they tend to get used to it or view it as fitting.  In truth, I tend to get a higher number of uncomfortable or disbelieving reactions to my given name... though it suits me, my "real" name tends to make people question me more than my chosen name. :)

So if it suits you and who you are, go with it.  That's what will make it seem "right" or not to others in the long run.

As to how to pick?  That's the hardy, true.  Maybe do as is sometimes done with baby names when no one can pick:  make a list of the favorites and then speak with those who know you to have them look you over and think of you and vote on what they like.  At the end this will narrow down the ones that are seen as suiting you best and you can decide between the most-accurate.

wow Sarah is a common name. I chose that as my female name. Sunao I chose because of how I am at work. Maoko is my old FFXI name and that was just because it was chosen from the random name generator but I like it and I respond to Maoko as well. You'll know the perfect screenname for you when you find yourself liking it everytime you say it.

I've never understood the need for "persona names" in RT venues. Is it to keep the clueless from being able to look you up in the phone book? Maybe so...

I've always used my own name in public. Also, I like having it used in scenes, since being called by my real first name makes the whole thing much more immediate, and real to me. I do have a "pet name" that was given to me by my owner, but that was her choice. Since it's derived from my own real name, it still seems to work for me.

Hummm.... "slave Sarah".... "Sarah the submissive"... has a nice alliterative ring to it, if you ask me...

On the other side of things. My given name and its spelling Dianna is unusual and unless its a blood family member or Master ( when he is upset with me) , then I detest hearing it. The meaning is two fold it means godess of the hunt and moon. Most call me Diane or Dee and even some folks that know me from CM that we have met actually call me wisty or wisteria. Sarah is old fashioned and its Hebrew for princess.  If you look at the different types of Sarahs in the course of history, youll find many a strong woman.

I will NOT tolerate degredation from you, and I refuse to degrade you either. Any leanings I have towards a D/s dynamic are sated by my pre-existing relationships.

Not at all.... as long as you are consistent. People have accepted my scene name without a problem.

I have a lovely, but very common given name, too. I used my given name at first until I found my place.  I wanted to be unique. (and yes I am a bit of an attention slut.) I also wanted something that identified me better. My scene name does describe me in a number of ways.

best!

Indeed I will. As I've stated, I like my name a lot. The main purpose here is to avoid confusion - it's been a constant source of irritation throughout my life. I'm not afraid of showing my identity in a kink community, which I know -is- a concern for some. Another reason to choose a scene name is for the persona it embodies. It gives a feeling of being protected when one chooses to toss away vanilla convention, and can add to the dynamic of a scene when used.

The opportunity here has not been lost on me. I have a chance to choose something that shows my personality - the essence of who I am. That's why I'm so glad that my Sweetie's helped me choose my scene name. He's been a part of my life for many years, but only recently has it been in a romantic/kink capacity. He knows me intimately, and can accurately assess how fitting the name would be to my personality.

I know that part of my problem is my generation - Sarah was a popular name for several years before and after my birth. It's one of those staple names that keeps washing back in gigantic waves. As much as I cherish it, I do believe I should adopt a scene name - thanks in part to this thread.

No, I won't hide my name or my identity from others in the scene - I have no shame nor outside reason to hide. I do, however, look forward to being easily identifiable - at least aurally. *chuckle*

I don't get why you need to use a different name for the scene, Sara is a beautiful name-that's why you hear it a lot. :)

Greetings from another Sarah. In the main local group I belong to there are 4 actual Sarahs and so we are Sarahs 1-4. We just have fun with it, the whole group does; and we invented the Sarah Society and now have several honorary Sarahs lol. It's turned into so much fun.

My nic is what my late father used to call me years ago and gets shortened to Sari by a few.
