Status: offline 		I've noticed that it is common in on-line BDSM communities for folks to say "Be well" instead of "good-bye" or "take care" or stuff like that; perhaps it is also used in the scene but I really don't socialize there. But I don't recall ever hearing it used outside the world of BDSM, but maybe Ive just been missing it.

So I'd like to know how this came about. For example, was it in a book and folks started copying it? Also, is this some kind of code that one uses as discreet signal to say "I'm kinky" when in polite company or is used kind of like a secret handshake that says "I'm a member of the club" when around kinksters?

Status: offline 		i use it, but i was not awere it was common to do it in BDSM enviroments. i think i begun to do this when i was in an Dune rpg online and had an charecter that was werry formal and that said it, and it crept into the way i spoke, now i just think it sounds better, instad of saying byby, i simply wish pepole to be well unthi we meet again.

Status: offline 		I don't think it has kinky origins. I can remember as a child that the priest would close Mass every Sunday with "Go now and be well". Sort of like saying "I wish you well".

Status: offline 		Whatever it's true origins, it is the parting salutation commonly used by Goreans. That doesn't mean everyone who says it is Gorean, but it accounts for the increasingly common usage here.

I just think it sounds sweeter and more personal.

I don't know for sure but is it possible that "Be Well" orginated on the old "Star Trake" show. As I recall "Mr. Spook's" farewell was "Be Well And Prosper."

Possible?????

Status: offline 		I know a few Goreans who are rather upset that non-Goreans in the lifestyle 'stole' "be well" from them because "it's a Gorean thing" I've always used "take care" anyway - it doesn't seem any less sweet or personal than "be well" to me, and at this point there is no risk of being mistaken for a Gorean (by those who insist that the phrase was stolen from Goreans) this way.

In all honesty, however, it's been a common way to part since the Roman Empire - long before John Norman and his books. I'm not sure how it got associated with BDSM (unless maybe those Goreans that I've talked to are right) but it has ... oh well - maybe it's because of all the kinky parties that the Roman nobles used to throw?

Status: offline 		I've noticed it is more common to say that in parting as well, but more so with those who adhere to a more formal protocol. My owner uses it, but not sure where he picked it up. I use it at times, but I did pick it up from those who introduced me to the lifestyle.

I do know alot of wiccans who use the words 'be well' and 'bright blessings' in the uk when they are just saying goodbye, not online... as for online, I notice lots of people do it, I have done myself. Its just another salutation.

Status: offline 		Some people just don't like to use "good bye". It makes it sound like you might never see the person again. My grandpa would never ever say "good bye". He always said that was too final, and he wasn't dead yet!
I don't think it has any "kinky" meaning either, but thats just my opinion.

Status: offline 		Reading over everyone's post, it's pretty obvious it's just another choice we have for ending a conversation. It comes down to preference as everthing else in life does. I have used it along with many other variations.
As far as Gorean farwells go, I was taught it was fine for a Master to say "be well" but a slave would always say " I wish you well" as saying Be well would be giving a direct order, which was a big no no. But this is all applyied to me only, and who am I?
