It has been brought to my attention that when in the unowned subbie chat room on CM the OP'S or room operators are gathering IP addresses and personal information on the people in the room. The IP address I have no problem with but personal information is just that personal. They have no need for it.

I would like to know if anyone out there knows if this is illegal or not (I have been told it is) In any case to my way of thinking it is an invasion of privacy and a form of cyberstalking? I think CM should either shut the room down, ban the people collecting this information or both.

What is your opinion? You can chose more then one answer.

SixFootMaster -> RE: Ip address collection in chat rooms (11/3/2007 3:51:47 PM)

Firstly, yes it is legal - since the site is hosted in the USA and the FCC rules and regulations only require one of the parties involved to know that the information is being collected.

It is however disconcerting and a breach of privacy. However, if you're going to give out personal information in open chat, then you need your head examined anyway. IP addresses are always going to be available.

Actually it would seem to be that the availability of the IP addy would be a deterent to cyber staulking, It would be a means of stopping and catiching the individual. As far as personal info what is being made available since I do not chat I have not seen the nature of this info.

Seems like it huh? Except for the easy to perform, practice of IP spoofing, which every spammer, hacker, porn peddler, and predetor knows how to do.

great answers keep them coming I am seeing a friend here we need more votes you don't have to reply to vote.

I don't see why it would be that big of a deal. If it bothers you so much, stop going into the rooms.

Raechard -> RE: Ip address collection in chat rooms (11/4/2007 3:43:52 AM)

It happens in all IRC based chatrooms here and everywhere.

You don’t have to be an op to see a big portion of someone’s IP either. I was unaware of this myself when I first started out but I don’t see it as a problem for the most part. The only thing I would say is that it should be stated somewhere by the CM site that this information is available to others in the room that use mIRC. It should be stated as a disclaimer at the top of the main chatrooms page but it isn’t.

It’s one thing to avoid chatrooms if you don’t agree with the policies within them but you first have to know about these policies and I’m not sure a lot of people do.

UcantBlockMyLove -> RE: Ip address collection in chat rooms (11/4/2007 1:03:36 PM)

I would tend to agree with the last post, the rooms should be required to post it in there room header if they are doing this. I would also say however because of the lifestyle and the fact animatie is so important to many of us it should be against the site rules and police to do so and anyone caught doing so should be banned from the site immediately no second chances

A site owner trying to enforce policy and doing this to do so is one thing but when someone who starts a room dose it in the corse of running the room to me it is just an abuse of power and should be stopped. I for one will never use this room as the Ops seem to think they are not accountable to anyone.

ownedgirlie -> RE: Ip address collection in chat rooms (11/4/2007 1:49:45 PM)

Yahoo has been doing that for years.  I believe it began after the scandal of underagers being lured into adult rooms.  It is legal, and I don't know about CM (I don't go to chatrooms here), but the last time I went to Yahoo chat (ages ago) they posted it as soon as you entered a room.  It was done up front and users were made aware, so they could decide on their own if they wished to continue or not.

Some people think that by obtaining a dynamic IP address rather than a static one they are dancing around the system, but your ISP still has records of all IP addresses given to you.  Anyone with a high level concern about privacy in these manners would be better off not frequenting the chatrooms.

Good point.  When Master taps into my webcam, there's a place on my program that shows his IP address.  This may be something cammers might want to be aware of as well.

TheIronHorse -> RE: Ip address collection in chat rooms (11/4/2007 1:58:21 PM)

An IP address doesnt mean a darned thing except who your ISP (or employer is).  One would need a court order to trace an IP back to an actual name/physical computer.  If I know your IP address, there is all sorts of neat stuff I can do, finding out your name is NOT one of them. If anyone finds out your personal info online, its because you most likely have malware on your computer. I have yet to meet anyone who's actually had their port "sniffed".  Its inefficient, so nobody does it.

The only REAL issue is if you're fooling around on CM and your company has a private block of IP addresses.  Surf at work at your own risk!

Raechard -> RE: Ip address collection in chat rooms (11/4/2007 2:00:42 PM)

I should also say that most ops have no interest in your IP beyond the fact that it is what they use to ban you with if you break the rules or act as a nuisance. The only lists I know ops to form are ban lists and they are only used because nicknames in IRC chat are so fluid and can be changed at a whim.

HouseMDIsDaMan -> RE: Ip address collection in chat rooms (11/4/2007 10:24:17 PM)

Please vote we need to know what you think

solitudesmiles -> RE: Ip address collection in chat rooms (11/4/2007 11:23:04 PM)

when we play on game servers and you put up the  server you get isp's automaticly, but its mainly just used to block you if you are in need of being blocked....

foxygrill -> RE: Ip address collection in chat rooms (11/4/2007 11:55:59 PM)

seems the room has a problem with new people I went over to check it out after reading this post and they banned me lol guess you need to be in the click

This is one reason I made this post. I have been baned because a slave I was talking to hooked up with one of the ops in the room. I then found out they where collecting my ip addresses when they called my voip phone at 300 am after booting me from the room. OK keep the poll going you don't have to post to make a choice.

aussieLady4love -> RE: Ip address collection in chat rooms (11/5/2007 9:27:42 PM)

ouch that hurts

slaverosebeauty -> RE: Ip address collection in chat rooms (11/6/2007 10:25:52 AM)

I don't have a problem with having my IP collected, it's not a big deal.  Heck if you respond to my livejournal blog(s), I have it turned on so I get your IP address, it's become a necessity for myeslf and others who have had vulgar, dishonourable people and stalkers respond to posts.

As for other places, its a good way to block people when neccessary, if you aren't doing anything wrong then it should not bug you; if you are, then their is an issue.

joanus -> RE: Ip address collection in chat rooms (11/6/2007 11:01:09 AM)

Good luck at getting my Personal info I use a piggiebacking system just for this reason. I would find a publicly provided WIFI area like a Internet cafe or if you live close to the local courthose like me, you can tap into their Band and have an untraceable everchanging annonomus connection, keeping your Personal info safe from hacker and the like.

lastchancesubie -> RE: Ip address collection in chat rooms (11/7/2007 1:40:22 AM)

I think it is wrong
