40 years of low prices pay off for WinCo; Eagle store opens

The Boise-based supermarket chain has kept its prices and profile low while standing its ground against Wal-Mart

For 40 years, the employee-owned company has stuck to a strategy of providing a low-cost, no-frills grocery shopping experience, without drawing much attention to itself. Many Boiseans don't even realize the company has had its headquarters here since it began.

But WinCo holds its own where other supermarket chains struggle: competing with Wal-Mart on price.

On Monday, WinCo will open two more megastores: one in Eagle and one in Perris, Calif. The Eagle store, next to Home Depot at State Street and Idaho 55, will be the fifth store in the Treasure Valley — and, at an imposing 92,000 square feet, the Valley's largest.

WinCo now has more than 60 stores in Washington, Idaho, Nevada, California and Oregon. It employs about 10,000 people and last year had sales that topped $3 billion. It is Idaho's third-largest privately held company, behind Boise Cascade LLC and J.R. Simplot Co., according to the latest annual Idaho Private 75 rankings compiled by accounting firm KPMG and published in Sunday's Idaho Statesman.

WinCo shoppers can find all the basic food items they need, but extras are limited. Customers bag their own groceries to keep transaction costs down. WinCo wouldn't even accept debit cards until recently. It still doesn't accept credit cards.

Nice. I'd rather do business with a store like that than Wall-Mart any day!
I belong to Costco because they take very good care of their employees.
I think the "average" Costco employee makes $18 per hour and full benefits.

I've been going to Winco stores since I was six. They used to be little more than warehouses, but lately they've added a few more frills. The people now days are the friendliest, because it's their store, not the bleary-eyed zombies you see manning Walmarts

How do you figure it's marxism, that's quite a leap.

People have been selling goods in their own stores since long before Karl Marx's skin began erupting. They're pure Capitalists - and they're succeeding against Walmart.

Give Karl Marx credit for millions and millions of dead Soviets, and that's about all the credit he's due.

If anything, Walmart is like Marxism. A dictator class on top, whipping the lower classes into producing, giving the worker class only what the dictator class thinks the worker class deserves...

This girl apologizes in advance for her ignorance but believes that Wal-Mart is also known as the "Red Chinese outlet Mall."

Excuse me? Are you talking about the Karl Marx of planet earth fame or of some imaginary corner of the universe where you make up brand new histories to suit your personal tastes? Just because Joseph dressed his despotism up on socialist clothing doesn't mean that it in any way relates to the emancipation of the working class.

Your last paragraph is so far off base it might be funny, if you weren't being serious. You are being serious, aren't you?

One of those CA WinCo's opened up around here.  I wasn't impressed, nor would I consider them competition for Wally World.  They seemed like any other Bag-n-Save style grocery warehouse and the prices were dead on with a locally owned grocery chain where I have someone to blame other than myself if the bread gets squished.

I didn't like the little anti-theft doohickies around the cart wheels, they had nothing from independent local suppliers that I prefer to support, and the beer/wine aisle sucked.

Now that I know they are Idaho based, I may check out their produce department a bit more closely in season, but they won't be getting my primary business.

Wally World is doing a fine job of driving me off all by themselves.  Now we have SUPER Wal-Marts and frankly, the distance I have to hike between the charcoal and cat litter, and the trash bags and toilet paper in the opposite corner of the store, through the typical crowd in there, may not be worth the $6 I save at the checkout.

Amen. And boy can you tell the difference when talking to your average Costco employee versus that of your average Wal-Mart associate.

What the hell has Marx got to do with millions of dead Soviets? Now you'd probably give him credit for millions of dead Vietnamese, even though that was down to America's. No doubt you think the Californian fires were Marxist inspired too.

Pretty much Zensee.  There is a great place to debate this, a few days ago.  I seem to have killed it, and I won't kill this one too lol, since it'd be a sidetrack at best from Wallyworld and its discontents.
