my ex brother in law was a hunter as well as taxidermist and he used to douse himself with whatever he was huntin's piss [:'(]  He had bottles of it in his basement. i once opened up their freezer to get ice cream and dead birds came tumbling out - never made that mistake again.

Deer hunting seson opens soon around the areas of the country where it is permitted.  i have always been a bunny hugger and thought hunters were somewhat cruel.

Friday, a 3 year old was killed here when the vehicle he was in collided with a deer in the road.  They may be overpopulated here; i don't know.  The child's death makes me very sad.

What is Y/your opinion of hunting?

Im all for hunter who use what they kill one way or another, my entire family used to hunt years ago my grandma was a great hunter as well as some of my aunts. It does cut down on over populations of many different kinds of animals. Racoons are cute until they eat your chickens or become rabid, get into your garbage, attack your cats causing vet bills, Deer are as well but if over populated when food runs out an adult doe will chase off the young deer and wont let them eat so they starve off or you run them down and they die in the woods and cost us money. Hunting has its place but there are also people who shouldnt have guns but I wont go there today

Plenty of misconceptions about what hunting is running all through this thread.

Trophy Hunting: for the most part people who are trophy hunters take a long view of hunting, they manage their property and the health of the deer on it to promote geneticly disposed to large symetrical antlers, eventually they end up shooting the "trophy deer" however not before they have reached the age where they hit their maximum antler potential. 5.5 years to 7 years of age.( edit to add obviously this means they let many deer walk right by waiting for one who has had several years to breed and send their genes forward in time through their offspring)
The modern term of it is Quality Deer Management. and it goes through several stages that get quite complicated. The process takes 5 or 6 years to get a decent result.

Hunting from a tree stand: Tree stands date back to King Arther times there are wood cuttings of them being used so it's not something new.
It's not like you just walk out there and put the stand up anywhere in the woods and you get something. You spend days scouting to find the right places in the woods to place a stand so that the deer will be close enough for your chosen weapon. The skill to find the right travel pathways and then choose the locations that on the day of the hunt the wind will be in your favor.
Deer trails are used in a habit form, day trails and night trails look alike so determining which trails are being used when takes skill.
Personally I prefer a ground blind to a tree stand but that's mostlybecause I like to be able to pick up and move if the weather/wind shifts or something.

Deer cause between1 and 2 Billion dollars a year in insurance costs due to auto accidents alone in the US.
We as a notion have eliminated most of the apex predators that kept their numbers in ballance.
Since the early 1900's when liscencing was brought around the herd nationwide has rebounded to the point where there are more deer now than there were when Europeans first came to North America.

Hunting has proven to be the most efficient and cost effective manner to regulate numbers of animals that have populations larger tha the carrying capacity of the land.

There are many other aspects I could talk (drone on) about but I'll spare folks unless I see a specific question. LOL

Archer--- great post

I would also like to add good hunters who use tree stands spend days scouting and many put up their stands months in advance in NY its not leagle to use corn or salt to bait. I have to disagree with a post I read earlier about the deer getting smaller or something, large deer are very smart and you dont see them unless you have done your work or they have become senile ?? (Spelling) or very lucky. I dont agree with hunting deer with dogs either thats lazy

OrionTheWolf -> RE: Hunting Season (11/11/2007 2:42:57 PM)

The population has to be reduced somehow. Outdoorsmen often appreciate nature more than many would think. It is better that Bambi die from a bullet, than starvation, disease, or hit by a vehicle.

Riiiiight... and the bags of corn, spotlights, salt licks, and female scent that are sold next to the tree stands are just for 'research'.[8|]
