Note: Krafft-Ebing says there is a natural tendency in men towards sexual sadism and a natural tendency of women towards sexual masochism.  At present, there is a push in the medical community to remove sadism (and masochism) from the paraphilia list in the next DSM.

oh just ditch the entire paraphilia concept...there's a concept

All sadists are tops, because they use the implements (hands, floggers, canes, paddles etc).

But not all tops are sadists. There are tops who prefer giving pleasure, tops who prefer to tie people up, etc.

Not sure if you were replying to me or the op... what I meant was that although I am a sadist, I don't always hurt when I top.  I can top in a sensual manner if the mood strikes me and it would have nothing to do with pain.

I am surprised that you would say such a thing; it is just so untrue.

I know quite a few sadists who are bottoms; submissives, and slaves; and they don't use implements at all.

Interesting.... Fifth Angel is a member of the local community here in Denver.  There has been a thread on a yahoo group here dealing with his views on all of this.  He too relies on definitions from books, much as Resident Sadist does.  It triggered a very lengthy debate about "descriptive" vs "prescriptive".

The "jist" if it came down to whether you wish to try to push the written definitions of certain words onto everyone as the solid as concrete (this is the one and only "real" answer) description, or.... if you are able to grasp and accept the concept that definitions of words evolve constantly over the years based on the common uses of them.

If you ascribe to Fifth Angel's theory, then a sadist inflicts pain on another for strictly sexual enjoyment.

He has prompted some in this area to start calling themselves all kinds of things.  LOL  Sensationists.... enthusiasts... sensationalists.... whatever turns your crank.

All I see is even MORE confusion on the part of anyone looking for someone they feel they can connect with.  It boils down to the people involved not taking a lable as a definition of someone, and actually communicating with that person in depth before entering into a relationship with them.  Everyone's definitions seem to be different.
