Alumbrado -> RE: How do you define a "Wanna-Be" (11/15/2007 1:03:36 PM)

'Wannabe' as a perjorative term referred to someone who could not or would not do the work required to claim a specific status or honor, but would spend a great deal of energy trying to pass themselves off as what they wished they were...

It is a current piece of PC nastiness to pretend that any phony should get the same respect as someone accomplished, because the accomplished person was once a beginner too.

I agree with Dnomyar in that we are all 'wanna be's' to one degree or another. As far as it being put in the negative light many of you cast it, I take exception. I'm a 'wanna be' and proud of it. I want to learn more and I want to experience more. I am eager to learn so much and to learn it properly. I admit it freely.
Possibly you're confusing the term wamma be with 'fake, fraud or liar'. Hardly the same thing. Representing ones self as an expert or competent in a given field when you are not isn't the definition of wanna be. It's the definition of a fraud. Amd that is unacceptable in any walk of life.

Actually, sometimes it is the definition of wannabe, and that's where the perjorative useage comes from.

American Heritage Dictionary:

Wanabe:

One who imitates the behavior, customs, or dress of an admired person or group.

I see this term used repeatedly here, in a derogatory way.  I'm curious what it means to people exactly and why it's negative? Just saw it in someone's profile accusing everyone here of being fakes and wanna-be's."

Usually I would define wanna-be or a fake as someone who claims to be something without a clue of what that actually means. Like saying you are an accomplished horsewoman but you don't know the difference between a fox hunt or a hunter's circle. Or saying you are a skater because you bought the fancy board but you don't actually know what grind means. Or that you are a gamer but you find playing the games too boring or too much work to actually play so you buy gold from the *insert your strongest curse here* gold spammers just so you can have the pretty object.

Asides from the gold-farming thing, I don't tend to care very much. When it comes to BDSM, d/s and m/s, I really don't care because there are so many different ways and combinations of doing what we do. It is very hard to point to anything and say "If you don't do this or know this you are a fake and a wanna-be". I tend to dismiss people using the terms "fake", "wanna-be", "real", and "true" to describe others or themselves in a BDSM context simply because I am not sure there can be any substance behind those terms. That and when I see it, it is usually someone bitching about how all the submissives are fakes because they don't them or something else along those lines.

Sage, I liked that post 9 you made. Nice spin on the word.

i see this in Doms' profiles sometimes; i think they mean people who never intend to take it to real life but don't admit that upfront.  Of course i also imagine some Men decide anyone who rejects Their overtures must be fake as a salve to Their egos, but i don't think that's the rule.

Somebody without 25 years experience [:D]

No, honestly it is someone who pretends to more knowledge and experience than they have. Now I do understand that 20 year old doms aren't going to have much luck getting a sub, but lying about it to try to get one with whom you will do things you don't know how to do safely, learning on them without their consent, is wrong.

Prinsexx -> RE: How do you define a "Wanna-Be" (11/15/2007 3:33:15 PM)

There is no such thing, unless you include that we are all most likely wannabe lottery winners.[8D]

Everyone is what they are and everyone has more knowlege about themselves than anyone else.

I wanna be loved by you, just you,
And nobody else but you,
I wanna be loved by you, alone!
Boop-boop-a-doop!

I wanna kissed by you, just you,
Nobody else but you,
I wanna be kissed by you, alone!

Boop-boop, I couldn't aspire,
To anything higher,
Than, filled with desire,
To make you my own!
Boop-boop-a-doop, boop-boop-a-doop!

CollegeConundrum -> RE: How do you define a "Wanna-Be" (11/15/2007 3:49:00 PM)

People often confuse a "wannabe" with a person who does not match what they're looking for.

I think the term should be geared more toward people who misrepresent themselves as opposed to what they are or what they think they are.  In a lot of cases, some people don't know what they are in this lifestyle until they have an epiphany.

Everyone starts some place---I think everyone starts as wanting to be something and it takes time to achieve your definition of real.

rmanrr -> RE: How do you define a "Wanna-Be" (11/15/2007 5:33:28 PM)

Greetings
aye Dnomyar as you state in post 12 she is a midget compared to some...but she is My midget, and in fact walks with bigger steps than many I know in the real world, vanilla or life choice.

Vanatru, thank you for your kind words.  I don't put much stock in labels, categories and such.  I yam wot I yam an dat's all wot I yam.

Dnomyar and Rmanrr....I am sooooo not a midget!  I happen to be a fully grown short-ass!  And if it weren't for us short ones, tall people wouldn't know they were tall, hmmm?

Hijack over, back to your scheduled thread.
