I've fucked a vegetarian--does that count?

Yeah, but I've eaten one, that's even better, Lam. [;)]

marieToo -> RE: Are you a Vegan or Vegetarian? (11/17/2007 5:52:18 PM)

On a serious note to the OP:

You might want to try a line of foods called Morning Star.  I'm sure it's vegetarian, but can't confirm that it's all strictly vegan.   My daughter eats a lot of their products and they don't taste half bad.

atmwelland -> RE: Are you a Vegan or Vegetarian? (11/17/2007 6:11:03 PM)

No worries. Glad I could help and hopefully if more vegans start refusing to buy "vegan friendly" products that are produced in the same facility as egg/milk they'll stop taking us for granted. The sad this is Yves (for example) used to be 100% vegan until the coporate bastards at Hain Celestial Group bought them out and they introduced products with eggs and milk.

As an aside I notice that the OP never requested a debate on veganism or being a vegetarian. She just asked for adivce on how to achive it. It's interesting to see people in the thread who have the balls to stick their heads in and bash our lifestyle choice.

Ahhh thanks for the heads up on those products.  Thank goodness I don't buy them, but I am going
to start looking at the ingredients on the back of all the "meatless" products I buy.
When it comes to meat substitutes, I normally only use Morningstar products.
I always add the caveat, I don't eat meat to my knowledge, cause you really don't know what is in most
of the stuff you buy these days or what is was prepared in or next too!

MzMia -> RE: Are you a Vegan or Vegetarian? (11/17/2007 8:10:43 PM)

atmwelland? would you expect any less?

The time to worry, is if no-one sticks their nose in and makes fun or bashes you on here!

Then you need to check the obituaries, cause when that day comes you must be dead.

It is obvious, many on here live and thrive off bashing others and putting people down.

GoddessDustyGold -> RE: Are you a Vegan or Vegetarian? (11/17/2007 9:58:35 PM)

Forgive the assumption, but I am assuming the if you are going "Vegan" you have already taken the first steps and you have been a lacto-ovo vegetarian? (eggs, milk, cheese)
I am not a vegetarian, but I also don't eat that much meat.  Mainly because I live with My daughter who is now almost 22 and she doesn't eat it.  I am just too lazy to cook meat all the time just  for Myself!  [:D]
She announced at age 11 that she would not eat meat anymore.  I announced, as her Mother, that she could choose chicken or fish.  She chose fish since that seemed less offensive to her, and I was saved the worst of studying how to properly keep a vegetarian healthy.
To this day she eats fish about 3 times a week, along with her fruits, nuts, veggies, beans rice. etc.  She is quite healthy, but I admit I would be concerned if she decided to go completely Vegan.  It is a tough row to hoe.
The most important thing to remember is combining your foods properly to get all the amino acids that are automatically present in meat products.  We need all those amino acids as the most basic building blocks of our nutrition.  For example beans alone is not enough, rice alone is not enough, but beans a rice together make a complete protein.
Good luck!

Isn't it "cheating" to eat meatless subsitute products that still taste like meat?   Just a thought from a meat-eater  ;-)

To be fair, I've tried a couple of the meatless burger-type products, and the ones that taste like veggies are pretty good.   They're more convenient than grilling off 4-5 different types of veggies to make a sandwich.

Good for you !    Doing a search on "vegetarian recipes" , or "going vegetarian" ,  will yield possibly more than you know what to do with !

In my opinion it's one of the best things you can do - not just for your own body , but for the environment . The production of meat animals is one of the largest sources of pollution , and causes vast destruction of our wild places .   Aside from the inherently and unnecessarily cruel practices used in getting animals to one's dinner table .

I became a vegetarian long ago - I will not support such cruelties .  The health benefits , and peace of mind happen to be a delicious extra  !
Though we are omnivores , our digestive system , when compared to carnivores , is clearly not meant to digest meat efficiently . The consumption of so much meat is in large part responsible for many very preventable diseases in humans .

By the way ,  the word "vegetarian" has little to do with eating only vegetables  :

It is taken from the Latin  words  vegetus or  vegetabilis or vegetamen .  Collectively , they mean  quick , fresh , lively , lusty , strong and refreshing !   To savor variety !

     How good is that !?

There's a bit of science that points to sugar and carbs as the instigators of much disease, rather than meat.

Good Calories, Bad Calories by Gary Taubes is an eye-opening read.

To the OP: I wish you well on your efforts! I was a vegetarian for three years, and it wasn't too bad [;)] I would just encourage you to eat as much whole and natural foods as possible, and keep an eye on your protein comsumption (Dusty had some good advice there).

gorgeous1 -> RE: Are you a Vegan or Vegetarian? (11/19/2007 10:01:22 AM)

I was a vegetarian for almost 13 years, and a vegan off and on during that time. My advice is treat yourself right. Being a vegetarian, or especially a vegan takes time and money. It's really easy and cheap to grab a cheese sandwich when you're a hungry vegetarian, but it's not healthy to do it every day. Make sure you buy quality ingredients and set aside the proper time to plan nutritious meals. I found that spending a whole day making meals and then dividing them up and putting them into the freezer worked best for me.

Good luck, stay healthy.

How about the production of  "canadian prison strap" animials"  I take it the animal's hide used in the production of the one you are holding was niether inherently nor unnecessarily got?

There are still tribes of humans who's diets are mostly made op of animal flesh. They have hunted, eaten and lived that way for more than 30,000 years. Are they cruel?  No cruler than the animal who would eat them is.

Hi,
After a long debate within myself I have decided to go Vegan and I was wondering if there are any Vegans or Vegetarians who can offer some sites, books and things in general I can look into..Also any advice you may have for someone just starting out....Thanks

First thought that comes to mind is to get a complete check up by your doctor to make sure that you arent deficiant in anything. Followed by going to the book store. There are ALOT of books with meal ideas and such for vegatarians. I've been one since I was sixteen so about 13 years now.
Make sure that you are still getting your daily recommended intake of vitamins:)

Termyn8or -> RE: Are you a Vegan or Vegetarian? (11/19/2007 2:43:18 PM)

I urge any and all people who do not eat meat to take a comprehensive mineral supplement. Colloidal should be good but there are other ways.

Mineral supplements are essential for the animals to grow and thrive, they are administered by vets, and mixed in their water and feed. They would die without these supplements. By ingesting the meat, we get those essential minerals. They are no longer in the soil.

Even I am getting less into meat, but I won't cut it out of my diet. Whatever reasons you have for doing so are your own. But don't wreck your health doing it.

I have a whole theory on how nutritional research has gone wrong, not that the facts are in question, just the conclusions.

If you're interested in the subject, just say so. Otherwise I'll leave it alone or put it in another thread.

SimplyMichael -> RE: Are you a Vegan or Vegetarian? (11/19/2007 7:15:53 PM)

My ex was a strict vegan and had been for nearly two decades and for what it is worth, looks about 10-15 years younger than she is.

She was careful to eat a balanced diet with plenty of proteing other than just soy.  I enjoy fresh food and found the diet fine with the only exception around the hollidays were looking at rack of lamb drove me insane.

As for someone who said eating meat substitutes was cheating, bullshit.  They aren't objecting to the look or taste of flesh but the fact that farmed animals are tortured while alive and when they are killed and not being involved in supporting that is a way of protest.

As  for

that is a pretty high standard and since we are lucky there are ANY products at this point that are vegan, I don't think punishing those that done have standalone production facilities is the way to promote the cause.  Are you also against processed sugar because it is filtered through charcoal which is "gasp" made from cooked bones?  That pretty much leaves just the crap that tastes like sawdust.

FatDomDaddy -> RE: Are you a Vegan or Vegetarian? (11/19/2007 9:26:37 PM)

No Michael....

but playing with leather and supporting groups who use and play with leather is CHEATING
if one claims to be a Vegan.

MzMia -> RE: Are you a Vegan or Vegetarian? (11/19/2007 9:48:19 PM)

I agree Michael, the meat substitutes are wonderful so that we can still enjoy
some of our favorite dishes {lasagna, chili, casseroles,etc.}.  I happen to love
Italian food and just because I don't eat meat, does not mean I can't fix some
of my favorite dishes.
If you tasted my lasagna with meat substitute I doubt you could tell that it was not
made with beef.

RumpusParable -> RE: Are you a Vegan or Vegetarian? (11/19/2007 11:25:47 PM)

Mya,

I didn't read the whole thread so forgive me if I repeat something.  I'm an ovo-vegetarian, cutting one thing at a time out of my diet.

Becoming Vegan (or Becoming Vegetarian, they've pretty much the same info) is an excellent book on nutritional information -whether going veggie or staying omni, for that matter.  In face, I own both and if you're interested I could dig one of them out of my book boxes (not everything is on shelves, we ran out of shelf spaces...) and send it to you.

Fitday.com is excellent (again omni or veggie), especially if you buy their offline program but the website is aces too, for keeping track of your intakes at first so that you can analyze your eating habits and make any adjustments you need.  Me, I found that even after going veggie I was eating waaaay too much protein for optimal health and not getting enough variety of fruit in (I'm a picky eater).  It's handy and free.

Vegweb.com has a lot of great recipes submitted continuously by the members.  I strongly urge the sweet and sour lentils (best made with red lentils, in my opinion).

I know I know a ton others but it's late and I'm blanking.  If I recall later I'll throw some your way.  Good luck!

Actually, I had special vegan cuffs made by a fabulous artist friend of mine.  And I always love people who decide how others should make their moral decisions, reminds me of right wing Christians...
