philosophy -> Admiring the enemy... (11/21/2007 1:34:24 PM)

The Bush hatred thread has got me thinking........who do you admire on the other side?
(other side could be political, religious or even sport based)

Real0ne -> RE: Admiring the enemy... (11/21/2007 1:36:15 PM)

other side of what?

...of you (generic)...

....in other words, who do you admire even though they are not someone you agree with......

Gilles Duceppes

Though not an enemy, my father.

I can't think of anyone I "admire" with the exception of musicians!
The "other side" of Bush would be Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid.
But, they're just as bad as Bush!
And Hillary Clinton is "Bush Lite" she's about 80% Bush!
So she wouldn't be an "opposite" to Bush as she voted for and believes in Bush's policies.
I don't know how anyone could "admire" any politician.

So do people really admire those they full scale disagree with?  I can admire people that I disagree with on certain issues but not others, but not wholesale disagreement.

I don't admire my enemies although I may respect certain qualities they possess.

I'll give it a shot, Phil, though, like RealOne said, I don't necessarily...... admire these folks, more of a grudging respect for them at times.

Newt Gingrich. Alexander Cockburn. Mike Huckabee. Robert Reich.

Sports.....Joe Montana.

....to add my tuppence worth......i'd nominate John Major......ineffective little bank manager that he was, he still managed to start talks with the IRA. A necessary first step to peace in Northern Ireland.

I admire those who can support their ideas with rational arguments and above all who are convinced of their position based on those rational arguments - even though I may disagree and have rational arguments that counter those ideas and that position.

I admire even more, those who can change their ideas when rational arguments are presented which challenge their position.

What I cant stand is flip flopping to match popular opinion or sticking to a party line which is indefensible. Insincerity, in a word.

I hate white supremacists, but I have to admit that I admire some things about the late Dr. William Pierce.  He is the guy that wrote the "Turner Diaries."  He was a physics professor originally, but he decided to join the white nationalist movement.  Don't get me wrong, I don't agree with anything he said, or wrote.  I hate Nazis.  But, you can't deny how far his ideas went.  He pretty much owned the entire white nationalist movement from the 1980's until the turn of the century.

I very much admire Muslims. I believe they have a fantastic religion and set of laws, yet they blaspheme in the most high. It is considered the greatest blasphemy to deny that Jesus died. They consider hima  prophet and even a greater man than Muhammed, and even say PBUH for Jesus (Peace be upon him). I also like Mormons (LDS) but feel that they have gone astray with the Book of mormon.

Bin Laudin has lead Bush around by the nose and gotten him to do everything he could ever dream of, got to respect that!
