really, I thought modern thanksgiving was all about how Lincon decided to nationlize the holiday as an excuse for issuing in turkey as rations to the troops as a cost effective replacement for chicken.

You still think thanksgiving had anything to do with that bullshit we learned when each of us was 5 years old? cmon.

Wow, you're like the third person I've ever met that knows the true origins of Thanksgiving. A tip of the hat to you.

As for the holidays themselves, they don't mean anything to me, with the exception of the 4th of July. Holidays like Christmas and Easter have been cannibalized from other religions. Many pagan religions celebrate the changing of the seasons, which come very close to established christian holidays. Hell, I think there's a week between winter solstice and christmas.

So I don't mind what these holidays have been morphed into, because in my eyes, they were never anything special to begin with. When I think of Christmas I think of christianity, and I think of the inquisition, the crusades, the catholic church turning a blind eye to Mussolini (sp?) so they could continue their indoctrination of the youth. I think of all the great minds, the astronomers, killed because they dared tell the truth. I think of all the people killed, "so god will know his own."

In that light, consumerism doesn't seem that bad after all.

Not even Rum, 3-4 days difference for the western Christians.  Solstice is on either the 21 or 22nd.  Christmas was originally set on the Winter Solstice, but in one of the Clanendar Changes it got moved a few days.  Eastern Orthodox Christians celebrate it a few weeks later.

But hey I am getting ready to go eat dinner at an Athabaskan's House.  My experience has been that Indians enjoy Thanksgiving quite a bit, but get far more upset at Columbus Day, as a holiday.

Fast reply

When are the Indians going to pay reparations to all of the families and the suffers of tobacco induced lung cancer?

Why would they owe reperations for us taking and mis-using tobacco?  It doesn't cause Cancer if used as it was meant to...

Well, it seems clear that you people are so far off the wall that it takes the light from the wall twelve minutes to reach you (us ?).

Well I am listening to Gershwin Rhapsody in Blue right now so I can identify with people who are nuts. I used to hate this.

So I am happy.

FYI I decided to fast for Thanksgiving.

Now I am listening to a bit of Bartok. Perhaps I will listen to that Christmas albim. I have no turntable, but when I did I ripped it with a $150 needle. It sounds really good. Even with the occasional pop and scratch people cannot believe that the LP was mastered in 1967. The dynamic range is phenomenal.

I'll have to see if it plays now that I got XP.

So that is my contribution to the celebration. And I talked to Mom today. That's it.

I will celebrate when I have something to celebrate.

T
