I use Trillian, which has certain defects, but at least it allows you to use all the major IM programs at the same time.  So it doesn't really matter to me if someone uses AIM or Yahoo IM; I can respond to both.  But I'd probably prefer Yahoo myself.

Having started with AIM way back when I have found YIM is much easier and works well for me...for some reason when my comp is using AIM it slowly seems to die or gets infected with something so I have stopped using it all together..I wonder if AIM uses more resources..hmm as for MSN its blah that the only reason I havent used it ...but now that I think of it I wonder if the masses use yahoo because they also have their homepage and email accounts with them....I do

The only reason I have an AIM account is that my company DOES use it at work..
YIM is my main mode of communication but I access it through trillian like others here.

Trillian allows me to have both YIMs and my AIM...
YIM allows me to send those offline messages that I adore.  Sometimes I have something that needs to be said, but I do not want to have a conversation.

AOL is a virus.  end of story.   Most people in the computer industry know it and most of the techs I know(as well as myself) wouldn't install it on a bet.

It's stable and won't fuck with your system, but not everyone likes it because it doesn't give you the best features of all the IM programs.  It just allows you to use them all at the same time on a stable and barebones platform.  It has a few nice features like conversation logging, inviso/non-inviso toggle, etc.

AOL IM sets itself so deep in your computer you can damage your machine pulling all the tendrils out.
That sucks.
Yahoo locks up my whole computer and won't let me sign on.
Which also blows.
Right now I am doing CM chat only, which is better than nothing, shrugs but then again I hate chat so its no big deal to me.

Back when AOL was the greatest thing on earth. That is all I would use. Because there was nothing else really around. Since everybody has moved on from aol. So have I.

I use YIM now because it's much easier for sending pictures. With AIM the picture shows up in the convo. If you didn't resize it right. You can't really see what in the hell you just sent. Also you have to wait until it loads before you say reply to the other user. (This might have changed. But I don't have AIM on my pc to find out )

I have Trillian now. But its just for AIM.

I never liked AIM. I really don't like Yahoo Messenger either, but it's the only one I keep on my computer. At least when it's active, it informs me when I have new messages (as I use yahoo mail as my main email account). I've never been one that likes to do instant messaging. It really gets on my nerves, and after a short time, I just shut it off because it just isn't my thing.

i use both MSN and Yahoo IMs.  i despise AOL so you'll never see AIM on my computer.  i had AOL as my internet provider about 10 years ago and they were nothing but a pain in my butt.  And, as carlie said, AOL is just such a pain to clean out later on.  It hides itself everywhere on your computer and really takes hold.  It's just not worth the trouble.

AIM is for elementary school and middle school friends.
MSN is for highschool friends.
Yahoo is for their music plug-in and chatroom friends.
Email's for college friends and family.

Just a head's up.. Trillian works on many services at once, including the three biggie's (AIM, MSN, YIM) and some lessers (such as ICQ), but it doesn't work on par with the messengers designed for those specific services.
