Might have something to do with the WWW being an international community and AOL being... you know... American.  Like, there are other countries in the world with friggin' internet, ya' know.

I don't know, I use YIM, AIM, MSN, Jabber... and ICQ... Just try and find people who use ICQ....

That's what I use, and for a long time too. There are other options that are similar also, like Gaim.

There's no point being stuck with one service when you can have them all.

I put AIM on an old computer at the request of somebody who refused to use Yahoo.

I went in and watched programs running and discovered that even if I did not bring up AIM after a reboot, there were AOL processes which were installed and stayed resident, continually increase in size (stealing memory) and refusing to be swapped out by the operating system.

The exact same thing happened with MSN Messenger, although what really irritated me about it when I used it at work is that my messenger mailbox and contact list continually imported anybody's contact list who logged in to their MSN mail on my computer at work.  Then it would propogate these addresses out to my computer at home.

If memory serves there is an open source program or two which will talk MsnMessenger, ICQ, AIM, YM, etc., and these do not have the built in spyware or memory hog aspects of the original product.

I don't like AIM.  I have tried to use it, and it just leaves a lot to be desired.  I have MSN, but I only use it for business and family.  I used to have an ICQ account, but I haven't used it in ages.  I tried out gmail's IM, but I didn't care for it either.  I use yahoo with all of my friends, because I honestly like it more than the other instant messengers.

Both messenger programs and social networking sites have regional success. Ever wonder why that social network or blogging site you joined years ago is still running despite noone you know or come into contact with being on it? Chances are kids in some southeast asian country are eating it up.

I use yahoo, though it sometimes gets called yahpoo or yahell, because it can be erratic, well it is with my puter.I am not sure if I like it or not, it just works for me, and that is all I ask.

MSN, will just not work for me, it is loaded, but it does'nt work

0yahoo was one of the first, i think right after icq hit the net.  one of the biggest reasons is that we could both leave messages to ech other off line and online so it was handier than email and also they had the groups which were used as a friend search so you could search bdsm friends out easily.  They dont do that anymore since they have ventured into dating as well.
