Is there something I don't know?  AIM is the 800-lb. gorilla in the world of instant messaging membership, and yet everyone here seems to be using yahoo messenger.  It's really been confusing me and I was wondering if someone would enlighten me.

Thanks in advance.

I much prefer Yahoo messenger in everyday usage.  I tried AIM and didn't like it at all, and MSN is a bit of a child's toy of an application, so I stick with Yahoo, although I do have an MSN logon too.

Question for people who have used both Trillian and Pidgin: What are the advantages and disadvantages of each?  Should I ditch Trillian for Pidgin?

I have both AOL and Yahoo.I have friends who refuse to use Yahoo,so wtf.

AOL is a pain in some ways.
I think Yahoo and YIM are a bit more user friendly.
Plus YIM has games to play w/ OL friends.

i had AIM -- for just one person -- and never grew comfy with it.  i love Yahoo IM, esp message archives.  i like changing my text font and color, etc., but i admit i don't like audible emotes or IMvironments.

Pidgen used to be GAIM. They renamed the project. I don't know the relative merits of either, but the Pidgen passes the "Wife Test", for an AIM replacement. ( No AIM ads, being the primary benefit out of the box... )

I use google talk. If I'm logged into Gmail, then I have a chat client running in the browser. NO additional software, and the "Online Service" model works perfectly for IM, b/c if you're not online, you don't need the client running at all.

( Of course, pidgen ( and kopete, what I use ) handle google-talk IN ADDITION TO everything else.

So, in short. If you like what you're using, continue to use it.

I just use Trillian to log on with my yahoo, aim, msn, and icq accounts at the same time without having to install the evil evil proprietary software from any of those companies. When I'm running Linux, I use Pidgin to do the same thing. Trillian also lets me log into my google talk account without having to keep a browser window open, by the way.

I have more MSN contacts than any other medium, followed by yahoo.

I'm currently running an Alpha version of Trillian and I must say it has a few nice features that the original was missing. I do miss the webcam now and then though -- would have to go back to the fully released version to get that back, and it runs in quicktime *gag*

The biggest advantage with Pidgin (aside from running seamlessly in most Linux builds) is that you can hold your mouse over a contact and see if they still have you on their contact list.

I use MSN (mainly) and Yahoo. MSN is the thing that controls the country I'm from, followed by Skype and then Yahoo.
I think MSN is so easy to use, and it works :D I also like the file sharing, being able to open up a sharing folder is friggin awesome

I do have the other accounts, got ICQ after a request from a friend I really care about because the other messengers fuck up her PC but I don't really like it, I have AIM but the only 2 times I used it I felt like I was lost in a jungle lol

guess it ranks this way for me
1. MSN
2. Yahoo
3. Skype
4. ICQ
5. AIM

a - slo - l is sooooooooooooo slow to use especially while handling the IM boards at the radio station ...yahoo runs quicker across the net and less connection problems.

I use AIM with friends/family in my vanilla life, it is a more personal avenue for me, I sign onto it alot more. I use YIM for collarme users as a way to mingle before sharing too much, its easy to keep track of things that way. If, however, there is someone I'd like to chat with who has one or the other, than I use what they have.
