Is there something I don't know?  AIM is the 800-lb. gorilla in the world of instant messaging membership, and yet everyone here seems to be using yahoo messenger.  It's really been confusing me and I was wondering if someone would enlighten me.

Thanks in advance.

If you own gorillas, you want the biggest ones.  You have a reasonable and useful interoperable alternative?  NOT MESSENGER, I don't want people running rampant in my computer. It wasn't an 800 pound gorilla when it first came out, and I suppose the upgrade path was easy.

Again, what is better and useful and secure and so on?

Many businesses use YIM for office communication, but I've yet to find one that uses AIM.  (I guess AOL does, but I worked for a company that had several agreements with AOL, and we used YIM.)

Once AOL gets its teeth into your registry, it's really hard to clean out.

So my best guess is that it's probably an age thing.  Younger people are more likely to use AOL.  But I've actually been on a community that seemed to have MSN as the primary chat vehicle.

I think it really dopends on what people you want to meet. I'd say 99% of the people I chat with regulary chat on MSN. I prefer Yahoo IM to MSN any day, but trying to convert the masses is futile.
So I agree with carlie, it's probably and age -and- location thing.

Well it can't be everyone using it, because I don't. I use Live Messenger, the cam is so much more clear than using Yahoo.

I started using icq in 95, I still have my original number, ...seems so long ago, moved to AIM for a few years, tried yahell have lots of people on there but only use it to cam, hated msn altho all my ums use it, now I use google talk. I can use it from google mail or as the standalone...has excellent voice, voicemail and sendfiles, veryeasy to  use and small.  The others are too big now, trying to take over everythin, drives me nuts.

Every time I try to put AIM on my computer my computer catches the technological version of malignant cancer.  I enjoy YIM because it also has a java version that can be used on any computer w/o downloading.  Those with Live Messenger can talk to those on yahoo w/o downloading it as well.  I've never had yahoo put anything malignant on my computer.  I suppose its also a bit of stubbornness on my part - I've been using YIM for almost 10 years now.  I'm not so great with new software so I haven't even tried MSN.

I've used all three, but never really liked AIM.  Yahoo IM used to be iffy, it would drop conversations at will, but they've cleaned it up a lot.  I used to use MSN all the time because it performed so much better than Yahoo, but almost never use it now.

I like that you can leave little IM's when the recipient is offline, sort of like a cheap & quickie email.  You can't do that in MSN, at least last time I fired it up.  And you can stay invisible and still have a conversation with someone, also unavailable at MSN.  When I'm chatting with, say, one of my (adult) kids, I don't want to get drive-by greetings from both people I do know and don't know.  In MSN, once you go to "invisible" status, you can't use it.  That's the biggest reason Yahoo is my preferred IM.

I have all 3... Yahoo is best for chat, as someone pointed out you can be invisible yet still chat... in fact, you can be invisible to some and not to others; I have a group entitled "always visible" and I automatically log on as invisible, always. Then I right click on the "always visible" group and change the status to visible, and anyone in that group can see me.

That's for my Cat persona, for talking to people I have met on here. I also use Trillian, though, for all my other accounts (vanilla, my novelist pseudonym, etc.). It allows me to talk to my contacts on Aim, Yahoo, ICQ and MSN while running just one messenger service. someone above mentioned AOL getting their "teeth" into your registry, and they're quite right. With Trillian, you don't even have to install AIM at all; you can sign up for a screen name on the website, and then use Trillian to chat. I usually am running Yahoo for Cat, as above, and Trillian for everyone else, at the same time.

All that being said, however... MSN/Live Windows is THE BEST for live cam! And believe me, I've tried them all, since I have a cam listing on NiteFlirt and I need something that works well, and consistently. I am postulating that MSN's video integrates more smoothly with the operating system because it *is* Windows. Yahoo completely sucks for camming :( Skype is better, but not as good as MSN. Eyeball chat isn't bad, but I could never get it to stay running more than a couple of weeks before it stopped working and I'd have to uninstall and reinstall it; after the third time I just said forget it and walked away.

AIM is for my college and high school friends but everyone moved to facebook as it is.

MSN is for family.

YIM is for dating.

I use all three but for different reasons. :)

Cat,

The 800lb Gorilla is that of AIM.  Especially the latest versions.  Theyre horrible monsters and incredibly slow.  Software companies these days are really bad about bloating software and adding so many craptacular features that it takes away the original point of the software.

Personally, i use the trillian client (not the aol version of trillian).  With Trillian, i am able to sign into all messengers at once, if i so choose.

As someone mentioned below, Google talk is number one.  It's simple, small, and to the point.  You can also use it via the web interface in gmail (Perfect for the office).

MSN is entirely different now windchymes(just to let you know).  You can log on and send messages if you appear offline and leave messages to those who aren't online - just as yahoo now.

AIM fucks with other add ons or software sometimes, and it embeds itself deep into a pc so I never use it.

AOL established a reputation for greedy and deceptive billing practices before Yahoo gained prominence.
And in the early days, AOL pretty much became synonymous with kids and teens online.

Whether that has changed or not, many people don't even think of them when setting up their systems.

I just find YIM more user-friendly, especially if I want to send pics or files, or use my cam. Gotta get a new cam, tho. Mine kinda sucks; old technology, slow frame rate.

OTOH, it means potential subs can't see me as clearly, so maybe that's a good thing!

I only use AIM. I think I have an aversion to YIM because I had two stalker types there and I actually found YIM to be slower than my AIM.

I know many find AIM to be slow and annoying, but Yahoo was slower loading onto my PC for some reason, so I got rid of it.

I don't cam, so that makes no difference to me. I started on AOL, and for work, so many colleagues used AIM, that it just became a no brainer.

But it is a challenge finding people who still use AIM, I will give you that.

You are try using one of the ones like trillian or Mebo (I think) there are several that will talk to YIM, AIM and MSN.  That makes life a little easier when you have friends on all of them.  You can do a yahoo or google search on instant message and find many others. While YIM will talk with friends on other services like MSN it does not work with AIM.  You lose some of the features when using a across the board client like trillian, but I find it easier to use one then 2 or 3.

I just prefer yahoo.  I forbid anything related to AOL in any way to be installed on my computer-- took too much to get rid of all that crap.

I rarely ever use MSN and really don't care for it.

Used ICQ back in the 90's and still have my number-- once in a great while (every couple of years) I may turn it on for a few minutes.

My work uses Pidgeon for inner-office communications.

Aim kept having like fatal problems and closing when I tried talking an no amount of reloading or unloading or reinstalling would help, Plus I just didn't like it as much as yahoo.
