The tenderness with which the main character's mentor offers his advice, made me cry and cry, when I first saw it:

"Hey... I don't have all the answers.  In life, to be honest, I have failed as much as I have succeeded.  But I love my life.  I love my wife.  And I wish you my kind of success."

- Jerry McGuire, screenplay by Cameron Crowe

Great lines, MM .

Did you know that Tarantino sold the TR screenplay for thirty-grand, to finance Reservoir Dogs? I didn't until recently....

I did not know that, Level.  It gives one hope, though.

Can't forget my favorite holiday classic with some of the best lines of any movie. A Christmas Story

"Downtown Holman was prepared for its yearly bacchanalia of peace on earth and good will to men."

"Only one thing in the world could've dragged me away from the soft glow of electric sex gleaming in the window."

"In the heat of battle my father wove a tapestry of obscenities that as far as we know is still hanging in space over Lake Michigan."

"Fra-gee-lay. That must be Italian."

"Randy lay there like a slug! It was his only defense! "

"You'll shoot your eye out"

To me, some of the most powerful movie lines came in the movie "Gladiator"

Maximus is standing before Commodus in the gladiator ring.  Commodus asks the gladiator to revel himself, which he does.  Maximus then begins, "My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions, loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next."

Lucilla says to someone, "Today I saw a slave become more powerful than the Emperor of Rome."

I also like the coversation between Tom Cruise and Jack Nicholson in "A Few Good Men".  Cruise is cross-examining Nicholson on the witness stand late in the movie.
Jessep (Nicholson): You want answers?
Kaffee (Cruise): I think I'm entitled to them.
Jessep: You want answers?
Kaffee: I want the truth!
Jessep: You can't handle the truth! Son, we live in a world that has walls. And those walls have to be guarded by men with guns. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinberg? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for Santiago and you curse the Marines. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know: that Santiago's death, while tragic, probably saved lives. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives...You don't want the truth. Because deep down, in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that wall. You need me on that wall.  We use words like honor, code, loyalty...we use these words as the backbone to a life spent defending something. You use 'em as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom I provide, then questions the manner in which I provide it! I'd rather you just said thank you and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon and stand a post. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you're entitled to!

Since The Princess Bride is my most favoritest movie of all time, the whole screenplay is my favorite.  However here are a few that stick out, other than my tag line.

Vizzine  - Inconceiveable!!!
Inigo Montoya  - You keep using that word, I do not think it means what you think it means

Princess Buttercup - Farmboy, fetch me that pitcher.
Wesley - As you wish

Wesly disguised as The Dread Pirate Roberts to Fezzik - Rest well and dream of Large Women

The Kid to the Grandfather - What is this? Are you trying to trick me? -- Where's the sports? -- Is this a kissing book?

Vizzini - I've hired you to help me start a war. That's a prestigious line of work with a long and glorious tradition.

Vizzini to Fezzik- Am I going mad or did the word "think" escape your lips? You were not hired for your brains, you hippopotamic land mass.

Kid to Grandfather - I'm telling you you're messing up the story, now get it right!

Grandfather to Kid - Yes, you're very smart.  Shut up

there are more and more...but I won't bore you

i don't remember it line for line but the soliliqy where Al Pacino, in Devils Advocate, talks about God vs the Devil - so funny i had tears streaming down my face from laughing so hard.  At one point i think he refers to god as the ultimate sadist.

Oh yes, there are more, but I just have to add my favorites:

"It just so happens that your friend here is only MOSTLY dead. "

"My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die."

"He distinctly said "to blave." And, as we all know, "to blave" means "to bluff."

William Goldman is perhaps one of our best writers, here's the screenplay for TPB: http://www.godamongdirectors.com/scripts/princess.shtml

-----

Other great writing: The Wachowski Brothers, in V.

V: ( Hugo Weaving ) [Evey pulls out her mace] I can assure you I mean you no harm.

Evey Hammond: ( Natalie Portman, making up for working with Lucas ) Who are you?

V: Who? Who is but the form following the function of what and what I am is a man in a mask.

Evey Hammond: Well I can see that.

V: Of course you can. I'm not questioning your powers of observation I'm merely remarking upon the paradox of asking a masked man who he is.

Evey Hammond: Oh. Right.

V: But on this most auspicious of nights, permit me then, in lieu of the more commonplace sobriquet, to suggest the character of this dramatis persona.

V: Voilà! In view, a humble vaudevillian veteran, cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of Fate. This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is a vestige of the vox populi, now vacant, vanished. However, this valorous visitation of a by-gone vexation, stands vivified and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin van-guarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition.
[carves V into poster on wall]

V: The only verdict is vengeance; a vendetta, held as a votive, not in vain, for the value and veracity of such shall one day vindicate the vigilant and the virtuous.

[giggles]

V: Verily, this vichyssoise of verbiage veers most verbose, so let me simply add that it's my very good honor to meet you and you may call me V.

Evey Hammond: Are you like a crazy person?

V: I am quite sure they will say so. But, to whom am I speaking with?

Evey Hammond: I'm Evey.

V: Evey? E-V. Of course you are.

Evey Hammond: What does that mean?

V: It means that I, like God, do not play with dice and I don't believe in coincidences.

Oh, wow... so many to choose from!

"You dated Frankenstien's sister?!"
"Yeah... Phillis."                             -Old Fred and Ringo, "Yellow Submarine"

"I'm glad you changed your last name, you son of a bitch!"   -Avatar the Great  "Wizards"

"I don't know what it is, but it's weird, and it's pissed off!"  -Dog Trainer  "The Thing"

"You see? You see?! You Earth people are stupid! Stupid, stupid, STUPID!!!" - Male Invader, "Plan 9 From Outer Space"

"Of course they'll listen to her! You shake people up, take away their lights and their heat, and they'll get scared. Threaten them with things they can't understand... They'll follow anyone or anything that offers a solution!" -Ollie Weeks "The Mist"

"I came to Casablanca for the waters."
"The waters? There are no waters here, we're in a desert!"
"I was misinformed."                                   -Bogart and Rains, "Casablanca"

"I aim to misbehave."                     - Mal Renyolds "Serenity"

Oh, and whomever cited the "from hell's heart I stab at thee..." line. That was actually Khan quoting Moby Dick, by Melville. (just to give credit to the originator)

So many to choose from, I'll post them as they occur to me. To start out, here's a favorite exchange from The Lion in Winter:

Eleanor: What would you have me do? Give out? Give up? Give in?
Henry II: Give me a little peace.
Eleanor: A little? Why so modest? How about eternal peace? Now there's a thought.

Yes yes yes! any quotes from a Lion in Winter are classics! Gods do I love that movie!

Of course he has a knife, we all have knives.. it's 1183, we are barbarians.

Regarding Madeline Kahn.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/parlouroflibertines/message/2351

Bernstein: Candide 1968 Philharmonic Hall Concert

Alan Arkin - Narrator / Pangloss / Martin
David Watson - Candide
Madeline Kahn - Cunegonde

Freaking Cunegonde.

As written: 3 high E-flats (above high C), two staccato and one sustained; there are also numerous uses of high C and D-flat.
