Owner4SexSlave -> chat speak, protocals and judgements. (11/24/2007 5:26:22 PM)

Chat Speak is slipping into our modern day, english language.   Amazing fact, William Shakespeare broke so many Grammer rules in day in everything he wrote.

Now, everybody probally had the Nazi of an English teacher back in high school.  However, those who have ever taken any English classes at college knows damn well, that the English language and every language is a dynamic, ever evoling and changing thing.  Language is a reflection of culture, and chat speak is part of the cultural movement going on now. Times are changing, as they always are.

Yes, I am one of the many people that have come to mix "chat speak" in my postings and writtings on the internet.  Chat speak is nothing really new, it's been around since the old BBS days before the internet explosion.   Some people know it as IRC chat slang.   Chat Speak has found it's way to IMing, Emails, Text Messages, Message Boards and blogs.   It's not going anywhere.

Now, I am simply amazed by those that have come to the conclusion that chat speak is sign of weakness or a lack of control.   No suprise that people of this same mindset judged William Shakespeare harshly in his day.  People of similar mindsets looked at the music that Mozart put out as radical and rule breaking as well.

Needless to say, I don't know about the experience other people had in college.  But I still remember being exposed to a lot of things in my "Writing about literature class" and other classes.

What the hell does the use of Chat Speak or not have to do with BDSM actually is rather ironic at the end of the day.  Oh Hell, what the Hell do I know anyways.   Those who slam me for it, Thank you for showing me the same amount of understanding and passion as was shown to Shakespeare back in his day.   Thank you for affirmation that I am a cultural rebel being part of the cultural movement and revolution going on in society.  Thank you for pointing out that I'm not closed minded and living my life set in stone according to somebody elses "so called" prime and proper and pristine rules.

There's a new evolution of BDSM chat speak protocals underway at this moment.  It's become a reality of life and our culture, and it's not going away or anywhere anytime soon.   Chat speak does not make anybody any more or less of a person let alone Masterful or Domly.  Does not define a person as being a submissive nor a slave.

Some will agree with me, some people will not.  Regardless, of what's being taught in college class rooms or the reality of how dynamic of a thing language actually is.   Face it, nobody writes in the same way as the day that "Beowulf" was done.

So well written and punctuated, not a "ru in2 cbt" or "i wl cu tmw" in there.

You know when you SAY in an actual verbal conversation...LMFAO, as opposed to doing it.
You got problems.

beltainefaerie -> RE: chat speak, protocals and judgements. (11/24/2007 5:48:32 PM)

I realize that Shakespeare took grammatical liberties, but that is not the same thing at all to me as people who literally cannot spell more than phonetically.  As a teacher, I dislike net speak and texting abbrevations in any other context.  I have no problem with actual abbreviations, but whole conversations written in some obscure "c me b4 u go" drive me crazy.  If people cannot take the time to actually spell real words, then I generally cannot take the time to speak with them.  I do appreciate that your post was written in actual words, though.

Over my 27 years of purveying fine prose (in addition to fine kinkiness![;)]), I've evolved into a much more casual writer when I'm messaging someone or making posts. But I still write those items more or less as I converse verbally. Conversing is, after all, what we're doing here albeit with a time lag. And I don't converse verbally in chatspeak.

But your point is well taken. If you use chatspeak, and someone bashes you for it, he/she isn't someone you're likely to be comfortable conversing with anyway.

Shakespeare compared to chat speak.  Whoa.  This is funny and painful.
Get thee to a nunnery!

An email of introduction or a profile is much like a resume, I for one would never dream of using chat speak in my resume and would dismiss an applicant who would use chat speak in their  resume...... it's a matter of respect and can also be viewed as laziness in not wanting to take the time and effort to write without abbreviation, writing longhand can also aid in showing/proving  intelligence or at least ability to spell and use proper english to the other you wish to impress.  If I can't take the time to put in a concerted effort to write an email to a Dom without chat speak, what is to prevent the Dom from looking at it and thinking if I am going to be that lazy, would I put in a concerted effort as a sub to him, the same works in reverse.   Just my opinion on the matter.

Aceton -> RE: chat speak, protocals and judgements. (11/24/2007 6:02:08 PM)

Well, in this country, high school students are now allowed to use "txt" language in national exams. That's right, our teens may now write things like "Shakespeare wuz t3h g@ye", and recieve marks for it.

So it was nice competing with you all on an international scale, you probably won't see many of us around after the next few years, we're going to be concentrating on cultivating a big crop of morons over here. On the other hand, perhaps we'll just become an international supplier of meat sheilds or something else that doesn't rely on a need to communicate effectively.

Dear Maya-

That's the sexiest thing I have read on these boards in a while<g>.

You're hired.

Stay warm,

Rastimmipitwax -> RE: chat speak, protocals and judgements. (11/24/2007 6:16:02 PM)

Nice manifesto, but the thing about language is that it is evolving in many areas, and the speech patterns of the "1337" do not necessarily make for the next revision of the OED.

Aceton> Perhaps in some places a student would get marks for "Shakespeare wuz t3h g****ye", but noone writing like that in a professional capacity is going to be working at NASA and drawing 100k+ next year.

Yes, I too have to agree with Maya on this..It reflects to me an unsurpassed laziness..And to compare text speak to Shakespeare!..Well after I was finished reading that portionality, I had to overcome that total flummoxed feeling..Shakespeare did not write something to shorten his writing prose..His writings rather had you captured in his ability to write a picture in your mind rather than just outright say what he wished..A rose by any other name.....should  not be compared to...U R Prety wnt 2 go out?...~shudders~..Tempting

MRandme -> RE: chat speak, protocals and judgements. (11/24/2007 6:28:41 PM)

Here's my thing. Words are tools, whether they are written or oral. Using formal speech when in casual conversation or chatspeak in a business letter... well that's like trying to use a 13mm wrench instead of a 1/2 inch. Wrong kind of tool

i have no problem with any form of speech or writing as long as it is used in the proper place and time. When i'm on IRC, i'll use shortcuts and chatspeak (bbl! ltns, wb and ty). When i'm typing an email to my son's teacher, i'm using proper grammar and punctuation.

On this forum, you can speak your mind and be casual, while on the Gorean forum, you mind the protocols and speak more formally and respectfully. It's a matter of writing for your audience -- something those annoying English teachers try to get through the thick heads of their students.

Choose the right tool for the job, is all.

It isn't an issue of what rules are broken (or why they are broken) - it is a matter of education.  William Shakespeare could discuss the reasons why he chose to do what he did, and he knew the rules he was breaking.

However, most who use "cme b4 ugo" can't discuss person, tense, or have a clue what the subjunctive mood is.  If they choose to 'break the rules' they should actually know them first - b4 they r allwd 2brakem.

You are correct it is a reflection of our culture - a culture where education is not a top priority, but rather entertainment is the main focus.

DarkDaddyZ -> RE: chat speak, protocals and judgements. (11/24/2007 6:44:04 PM)

I got that the OP expressed his opinion about chat speak. But what about protocol and judgement?
