Bid to free Teacher.

British officials are trying to secure the release of a British schoolteacher arrested in Sudan for letting her pupils name a teddy bear Muhammad.

I read about this yesterday.  It screams "wtf?" So what happens to parents that name their children Muhammad?  Muhammad is an incredibly common name.  I could see a problem if the bear was named Allah or Muhammed the Allah Bear... but just a plainly common name such as Muhammad.  No.  It does not fall under their proposed charge; according to the story "article 125 of the criminal law" which covers insults against faith and religion.

I'm having 100 teddy bears made up, to hand out to the kids at the Mosque round the corner this Friday - a sort of seasonal goodwill gesture, you know?

Each will have a T shirt, with the name Mohammed on it.

Yes, I can be culturally sensitive too.

General Gordon must be spinning in his (various) graves.

This begs the obvious question of what is a British teacher doing teaching in Sudan?
Did they run out of teaching jobs in England?

The teacher's students named the bear and SHE is in trouble?! Yep, that makes a LOT of sence.  I think I know some officials who are going to be eligible for next year's Darwin awards or at the stupid awards. Sheesh

well.... yeah, but it would be a human rights abuse to subject small children to a flogging.

Could it be that the reason for the charge is because she is;
1. Non moslem,
2. British
3. A woman
4 A woman in a position of responsibility and possible power if you think being a teacher is powerful,( Islam and the position of women in their society)

Sad it is, that this has happened, but it does seem those westerners who offer themselves for the betterment of third world societies are always soft targets for anyone who wants to make a point, political or religous. I am only surprised in this instance that it is the country's authorities, not the usual local raving lunatic, nutcase freedom fighter/terrorist, gangster or war lord.

Maybe despite the plight of some of these countries, westerners should just stay at home.

I have just heard on the BBC news that the teacher's charge is;

' Inciting religous hatred '

My thoughts on that are WTF!!!

An interview with a member of the islamic community in Britain says the teacher naming a teddy bear after the prophet Muhammed, is NOT against islamic law.

It would seem this whole thing is going to get out of hand, with talk of expelling diplomats etc.

I actually think its a good thing that Christian teachers are happy to go and work in Muslim countries, and that Sudan welcome them. I think the whole thing is a misunderstanding, although there me be political motives behind it

I read that she got convicted of it and sentenced to 15 days in jail.  This should serve as a lesson to all Westerners to stay out of these third world shitholes.  There are plenty of people that need your help in countries with sane legal systems.  We should just let these people do what they want.  Eventually we will have no more need for their oil, and they can go back to herding goats, living in tents, and cutting each other's heads off.

I have been following this story very closely.  I am worried for the teacher's safety in prison over there.
The people were protesting because she did not get the tougher sentence.
The young students coming up thought this was crazy.   Why couldn't they send her home?
Western Women do not need to go to the Middle East.   They can get involved in something like this without having a clue or someone to protect them.  We basically have no rights in third world countries.
Could you imagine what this would cause if Sudan had followed through with the corporal punishment?  They could have set off an international conflict that could lead to the big one.   It deserves that kind of reaction because it is totally rediculous.

Regards, MissSCD

It is an action based on political posturing. Essentially, the authorities didn't like the fact that a British woman was teaching their kids, so they found a reason to arrest her, humilliate her, make her fear for her life and saftey, and then kick her out of the country.

This isn't political correctness, it's religious fanaticism, A.K.A. living in the fourteenth century. In most religions naming children for founding members of the cult is considered auspicious. The different cults just have various opinions about what constitutes idolatry and blasphemy.

Now making sex toys of religious icons is probably universally frowned upon. I wonder how long before the infamous company, Divine Interventions rises to the occasion. ( http://www.divine-interventions.com/ )

PS: BTW - we got together and agreed that the term PC was meaningless in any categorical sense and, at best, is useful as a convenient shorthand for genuine argument, when dismissing of points of view contrary to one's own.
