Hey - don't shoot the messenger here

PRINCETON, NJ -- Republicans are significantly more likely than Democrats or independents to rate their mental health as excellent, according to data from the last four November Gallup Health and Healthcare polls. Fifty-eight percent of Republicans report having excellent mental health, compared to 43% of independents and 38% of Democrats. This relationship between party identification and reports of excellent mental health persists even within categories of income, age, gender, church attendance, and education.

The basic data -- based on an aggregated sample of more than 4,000 interviews conducted since 2004 -- are straightforward.

Ah yes, self-delusion.

Sanity -> RE: Republicans Report Much Better Mental Health Than Others (11/30/2007 5:49:20 PM)

No, those grapes are actually very tasty.

You know, this is why I went apolitical.. I can't drink the Flavor Aid, and trying to make things better only gets depressing.

It is really easy to be happy when every time you see the world falling apart you interpret that as evidence that the Rapture is imminent

justheather -> RE: Republicans Report Much Better Mental Health Than Others (11/30/2007 6:31:06 PM)

I guess there is something to be said for lacking a conscience.

Sanity -> RE: Republicans Report Much Better Mental Health Than Others (11/30/2007 6:33:57 PM)

Depression, you say?

That counts. Anecdotal evidence that perhaps what the poll is reporting is accurate. And noting your attempted slam at your perceived political opposition (the rapture comment) does denote at least some hatred, despite the claim that you're "apolitical".

I am not completely apolitical, I have more contempt for republicans than democrats.

Actually I do not dislike all republicans as voters.... but I think that justheather maybe on to something.. lack of conscience does probably help one sleep better at night.

Okay, fine. Some on the Left. The fact that there are exceptions is noted.

You know, for someone that gets hot under the collar anytime someone insults a republican, you go around putting down everyone on the left 24-7... do you find a bit of hypocrisy in the way that you do this?

Sanity -> RE: Republicans Report Much Better Mental Health Than Others (11/30/2007 7:15:22 PM)

I don't care who you insult. And I don't get hot, that's all in your mind. And if you're allowing me to push your buttons, that's in your mind too. All I am doing is poking at news items and picking peoples' brains a little bit, hopefully we can all find some interesting things to think about without getting too upset over all these bits and bytes on a computer screen.

Some realities are unpleasant, and that's the only way I can really hurt you in the end, isn't it. You know, by revealing something that you hadn't seen before that tests your accepted version of the truth.

And so no, I don't see any hypocrisy at all.

I never get upset over this forum anymore... a few times in the past I have, but I can tell you that when I took my hiatus I fell in love with life and I am one of the happiest people I know...

There is nothing you could say that could remotely upset my rose colored world view sweety.. not that you were trying to... I just find your selective news bits entertaining... not that you are prejudiced or anything[;)]

No chance.  This is an interesting poll.  I'm not going to weigh in politically here.  I merely wanted to point something out.  These results aren't reporting what people's ACTUAL mental health IS.  People SELF-REPORTED on what their mental health is.  There are raging paranoid schizophrenics, for instance, who would self report that they are fine and have no paranoia, delusions, or mental health issues at all.  That doesn't mean they don't.[;)]

The same could apply here.  It's not that Republicans necessarily HAVE better mental health.  It could possibly be that they only SELF-REPORT better mental health.  Big difference.  The reasons why one would not report real mental health issues are diverse, I'm sure.  There's still alot of stigma attached to lots of disorders.

Just food for thought.  Don't shoot me, either, Sanity.  Glad to see you back posting more regularly[:)]................luci

I also have this theory that evil people live longer. Mr. Burns proves it. My case is solid.

That is a good point luci... they could all be on prozac for all we know

Shawn1066 -> RE: Republicans Report Much Better Mental Health Than Others (11/30/2007 7:28:05 PM)

Of course we have better mental health than Democrats, duh. :-p

popeye1250 -> RE: Republicans Report Much Better Mental Health Than Others (11/30/2007 7:31:20 PM)

What about us Independants?
I bet we score even higher than Repubs.

TheHeretic -> RE: Republicans Report Much Better Mental Health Than Others (11/30/2007 7:34:13 PM)

Sounds about right to me.  The survey is of how people view themselves.  The Dems to have been pandering to victims, and those who view themselves that way for a long time.  Repubs seem to be more interested in self-suffient types.

That's really generalizing a bit, I fear.  But, even if that were true in general...that Democrats view themselves as "victims" and Republicans want to be seen as more "self-sufficient....and I'm NOT saying it is.......having mental health issues doesn't make one a "victim."  Admitting that you have such issues doesn't mean you're not "self-sufficient."  Some of the strongest, most determined to be self-sufficient folks I've known have had mental health issues to bear.  Throwing the divisive political arguments out the window, let's focus on the real crux of the thing here.  Having and/or admitting you have a mental health issue doesn't make one a non-self-sufficient "victim."  Surely that point can't be argued, can it?..............luci

Um, 43% of indes, 58% of republicans.... so no, indes are not as "happy" as republicans... but ignorance is bliss
