I'm trying to send some good thoughts out to the families in Omaha tonight. These events have become far too common. I'm puzzled by something though. They have all the details on the killer. WTF? That doesn't happen. Given that the country was warned of just such attacks by the Islamic Crazy People (a tiny fraction of the world's Muslims), and the standard confusion, completely wrong first reports and lack of information in the media when these things happen, does this make anyone else say "hmmmm?" After his family kicked him out, Hawkins lived for a little more than a year with a friend's family in a house in a middle-class Bellevue neighborhood, said Debora Maruca, who owns the home. "When he first came in the house, he was introverted, a troubled young man who was like a lost pound puppy that nobody wanted," Maruca said. Maruca said Hawkins was fired from his job at a nearby McDonald's this week and had recently broken up with a girlfriend. She said he phoned her about 1 p.m. on Wednesday, telling her that he had left a note for her in his bedroom. She tried to get him to explain, but he hung up, she said. She called Hawkins' mother, went to the Marucas' house, retrieved the suicide note — in which Hawkins wrote that he was "sorry for everything," would not be a burden on his family anymore and "now I'll be famous," she said — and took it to authorities. But still, I,m really surprised he didn't get more people. Not to sound morbid but you'd think these ass jacks would have at least practiced with their fire arms more on the fly. Stupid video games must make people have either bad eye site or shitty aim...I mean come on it was a mall full of people, how over stocked can you want it?... Your telling me he only got one person?.... Still I remorse for those words and my heart go's out to all the families, but honestly if I get taken out by one of these stupid fucks I would at least appreciate it if they weren't one of the retarded ones that really don't deserve a head line to be remembered.. Pffft famous.... more like still a fuck up. As is any one who decides to be famouse by killing people. Least hinkly could have done was wait till Nixon came around, stupid dushe bag... Always the innocent, and for all the wrong reasons. I mean if the bullies beat you up, don't kill the innocent kids around you. >Morons I swear.<

The shooter was a 20 year old male who was apparently sufferring from depression and had been fired from McDonalds that morning. He killed 8 people and himself at the Van Maur customer service counter. He had no apparent connection to Van Maur or any of the people he killed. He is a hunter and had knowlege of firearms including the assault rifle that he used. He had recently been arrested for contributing to the delinquency of minors. Apparently his mother took the suicide note to the police (around 1 pm) just prior to the shootings beginning (at 1:45 pm). The Van Maur employees had recently had training on dealing with conflict situations. It is apparent from the interviews coming out that a number of them and other private citizens saved many lives. The mall was surrounded and entered by police within 6 minutes, by that time 8 people were dead. Two remain in critical condition. This type of thing is rather uncommon in Omaha. It is having a profound effect on the citizens here. He was merely a troubled young man with issues (most 20 year olds do). All of his friends that have been interviewed described him as "nice". There is no indication that he was ever violent. At this hour the investigation continues. The Chief of Police just gave a brief interview. The bodies are not yet all identified. The mall remains closed with OPD, Douglas County, the State Patrol and the FBI handling the crime scene. Ironically, the President was here today.....why this kid chose the Westroads mall where he never went is a mystery.

You know one of my friends that is originally from another larger city commented on that today as well. We always have this type of information this soon here, although things of this magnitude rarely happen. When things happen locally here, our PD and press do a good job of letting people know what they can verify right away. That may not be the same in other places, but keep in mind despite the fact Omaha has around 3/4's of a million people it has a very small town neighborly mentality. Actually, having been watching the news intently since 2pm, I believe for Omaha the information came out rather slow. Also keep in mind that training for hostage/terrorism isn't uncommon for public places now, even in Omaha. On 9/11 as we watched in horror the President flee to Omaha to hide it became fairly apparent that yes in fact even here could be a target. edited to add: To give you a greater perspective, since 1:50 pm today nothing has been on the 3 local channels other than running stories and interviews about this event. Sports, the news and anything else have been pre-empted.

Then some joker on the street ni a baseball cap said the buildings collapsed because of the "massive" impact of the planes and "intense" fire and the lead heads have been parroting that line ever since. You can bet that we will have many more cut and dry instant pudding very thourough investigations in the future.

Laurell, this kid should have been ELATED to have been fired from McDonalds! He should have gotten his ass right down to a military recruiter's office. I have a Navy buddy and his wife who live in Omaha near Churchish (?) park. I'll be out to see them in the spring. He's got two deadbeat sons who may have known this guy. I'm trying to get them to move here and "without" the kids.

This type of scenario is horrific and one the type of situation, I will never be able to get used to. I am glad you posted this, I thought about posting it. There are so many mentally ill people floating around, that seem to be able to get firearms. 20 years old? I did not realize he was that young. So sad to be so young, disturbed and a threat to himself and his community. I hope his victims R.I.P., I can't imagine how the victims families feel.

Ironically in July Omaha passed a city ordinance that does not require people to get a permit to carry firearms. I realize that wouldn't have applied in this case as apparently he stole the rifle, however the law seems out of place here and prone to issues.

Hi Theheretic I think most are missing the direction of your post…maybe I am too. If I have this right you are suggesting that there may be some kind of planned conspiracy. That it seems the information is too comprehensive and accurate to be realistic. If I am correct then what do you suspect? That this is some kind of government conspiracy involving local law enforcement, news, and political entities? Are you and realone wanting to turn this somehow into a black SUV, helicopter, brainwashing secret homeland security plot to boost republican support and instill fear in voters of the Midwest? I am so sorry for the family of the perpetrator but I wish people would stop characterizing him as a poor troubled youth. That his behavior is somehow common among children of his age group. To me he was an incredibly selfish unfeeling monster that had no respect for the lives of others. It is proof that there is truly evil in this world and there is no possible excuse for his actions. Mental illness is certainly not an excuse… there are millions of mentally ill people on this earth and they are not murderers… It really gets me when people use this for an excuse. Someone who will kill may be ill but he is still and always a murder. I only hope his family and the families he so tragically destroyed can eventually enjoy life again. Butch

As long as people keep their heads in the sand and pretend that this epidemic doesn't exist in their back yard, it will grow. And as long as the media and politicians profiteer by pretending that the problem is guns or music or trenchcoats, they will influence more and more of these young suicides to go out in a blaze of front page glory.
