We're agreed, then.

Yeah probably.

I found it funny listening to the Sky box office adverts comparing it to the great fights and how we all remembered them in the past. I thought to myself the reason everyone remembers them is because everyone had access to see them. Only a handful of people will watch this fight so even if it is a great fight it won’t be remembered in a years time.

A handful? Half of England will be up at 4 in the morning watching this. 'Get your point though, this should be on normal television.

I'd love to say he has a decent chance, and he would have a 50/50 chance were they both natural light welterweights; Ricky would pin him down and go at him from all angles and keep it going for the 12 rounds, he's a high energy fighter and has no qualms about taking a few on the way in: the Yank would struggle with a lad constantly going at him.

Tsyzu hits far harder than the Yank and is far more aggressive, Ricky is probably the only fighter on this planet who could blitz Tsyzu, and by the end of the fight he'd brawled the heart out of him. Many thought Tsyzu was the best pound for pound fighter in the world until Ricky took him apart, so it wouldn't be the greatest upset in the world if Ricky did get on top of him.

This fight reminds me of Benn/McClellan - McClellan was a hard hitter and an exceptional boxer, but his arse went when he realised Benn could take everything he could throw at him and keep coming back for more, he visibly melted away from the second round on - if Ricky can catch him, the Yank will fold under the onslaught.

The odds are about right, Mayweather at 4/7 is how I see it. As PoliteSub points out, no one fancied Honeyghan to beat Currie, not many fancied Benn to beat Mclellan, or Calzaghe to beat Lacey, and Mayweather has never been put under the pressure that Ricky will throw at him - if he can catch him.

I can not believe I missed this thread yesterday,,,I have been counting down the hours to the fight, I can NOT WAIT, I am SO excited.  Anyway,,Hatton does NOT have a shot in hell against Mayweather, PERIOD.  Like I said in My blog,,,anyone wanna make a bet with Me?  LOL  Just like with De La Hoya,,,,,Mayweather may have a big mouth, but if he can back it up, then that is his right, lol
I boxed for years and the best feeling in the world is getting into a verbal match with your opponent and then kicking their ass in the ring!  Mayweather has that hunger for the win, more so than Hatton, I think anyway.  Well I will be sure to check this message board as soon as I get in from the fight tonight!!

seeksfemslave -> RE: Ricky Hatton gonna spank the yank (12/8/2007 4:55:56 PM)

I have watched a few videos of Hatton since this thread was posted.
If punching people in the bollocks, forcing your head into their face, grabbing them round the neck  and generally mauling and wrestling them a la street brawl is allowed.... then he cant lose.

ItalianSMistress -> RE: Ricky Hatton gonna spank the yank (12/8/2007 11:31:10 PM)

I AM SO HAPPY
THAT WAS A GREAT FIGHT AND THE BEST OUTCOME I COULD HAVE ASKED FOR

Although I no longer have feeling in My hands or throat from yelling and clapping

Has Ricky woke up yet?

NorthernGent -> RE: Ricky Hatton gonna spank the yank (12/9/2007 3:25:24 AM)

You've got to be in it to win it, Level. Maybe you've stepped in a boxing ring and taken a few, I wouldn't know.

That lad has dedicated his life to boxing, worked all his life for it, beaten the best at his weight, i.e. 140 lbs, beaten world champions at 147 lbs and stepped up a weight to fight the best fighter out there and at a huge disadvantage of fighting a bigger man, with a couple of inches difference in height, reach and waist. The lad is the best light welterweight on the planet by miles, there's nothing to touch him. As we saw last night, he's not the best welterweight on the planet, which is only to be expected because it's not his natural weight.

Ultimately though, the lad can hold his head up high in the knowledge that he'll take on a bigger man who is generally considered to be the best pound for pound fighter in the world, knowing that the difference in size and weight could mean serious damage. 'Takes a big pair of bollocks to put yourself in that situation.

A word on Mayweather, I saw the post fight conference and fair play to the bloke for showing some respect and humility.

seeksfemslave -> RE: Ricky Hatton gonna spank the yank (12/9/2007 3:38:59 AM)

The only problem Mayweather seems to have is his name. It sounds as tho' he should be running a book or flower shop.

If Hatton is the "street brawler" type, then by and large as they meet ever more skilled opponents they eventually come across someone who can deal with the "brawling" and dish out some lethal punches of their own.
Isn't that what happened here?

No disgrace in losing to a better opponent.

I agree, NG. Hatton has nothing to be ashamed of, for sure.

I  would never look down on fans for supporting their man (or team), but there was never a doubt how the fight was going to end.

Hatton is a charger, Mayweather is an excellent technical boxer who can move.  That always ends badly for the charger, unless he happens to land "the punch".  The same reason why Tyson could never beat Hollyfield.

Adamx, not neccessary, he fought a good fight!

Politesub53 -> RE: Ricky Hatton gonna spank the yank (12/9/2007 9:42:41 AM)

It was good to see the respect Mayweather showed at the end, going over to see if Hatton was okay. Both guys knew they had had a fight.

Tyson couldn't beat Holyfield because he was past his best when they fought. Holyfield was an excellent fighter who was as brave as they come, he finished Bowe's career and Bowe must have been a good 2 to 3 stone heavier than him, but in his prime Tyson was unbeatable. Tyson was an animal and I don't think anyone of any era could have lived with him at his peak between 1986 and 1988. Tyson lost his hunger because he had nothing left to prove, and those of his day simply weren't in his league.

Ricky was beaten by a bigger man, if they were naturally the same weight it would have been hard to call, but you have to hand it to the Yank, he proved a lot of people wrong last night when he stood and traded, and, based on the press conference after the fight, the real Mayweather is not the 6 years old who will say anything to sell tickets. Hats off to the Yank, exceptional in the ring and gave credit where it's due outside of it.

Ricky is a decent boxer, he has far more to his armoury than brawling. Have a look at the comments from Angelo Dundee who knows a thing or two about boxing: a breath of fresh air for boxing is how he described Ricky.

What happened here is Ricky stepped up a weight to fight one of the all time greats who has won titles at 6 different weights, doesn't have a mark on him after 39 fights, and has only been in trouble once in his career. This lad will be mentioned in the same breath as Robinson, Leonard, Hagler, Ali, Tyson in years to come.

For 364 days of the year we Brits love the Americans...but on Saturday 8th 2007...it's gloves off....cos Ricky Hatton gonna whip the puny assed lil subby Floyd Mayweather..

Well, you win some, you lose some.[:(] To Me, it looked like Hatton thought he had a chance, but the cute lil "Prettyboy" Mayweather pullled that card quick in rds 6-9, over by rd 10!!!!![:D] One of the best fights I've seen since Tyson vs. Holyfield.

yes he is a decent boxer, and also one who likes to charge and push the fight.  While he is a decent boxer, Mayweather is an excellent boxer.  Put those two things together and you get just what should have been expected.  Hattan charged, Mayweather picked and jabbed, and jabbed, and jabbed.  The punch count reflects that.  Hattan came in swinging,  lots of punches with a small percentage of hits.  Mayweather threw a lot fewer punches but hit a much higher percentage.

A faster better boxer beat  an aggressive charger, just what you would expect, unless the one doing the  charging gets that one punch.

NorthernGent -> RE: Ricky Hatton gonna spank the yank (12/9/2007 10:53:38 AM)

Looks like we have a difference of opinion. For me, the defining factor was Mayweather being a bigger bloke.

PlayfulOne -> RE: Ricky Hatton gonna spank the yank (12/9/2007 11:01:38 AM)

Oh I understand why youi see it that way.  I am not a fan of either, but saying it was just because Wayweather is bigger ignores how good a technical fighter Mayweather actually is.  Hatton is a excellent fighter who deserved his chance.
