Huh?

I could be wrong, but I think Bear's point is that it's extremely unlikely we'd be having this discussion about a disease that primarily struck straight people.

popeye1250 -> RE: Huckabee wanted to isolate HIV patients (12/8/2007 10:18:34 PM)

Some people (wackos) actually think that we should let HIV pos people into the country.
I mean for what purpose?
You know that they're going to try to get $1m worth of medical care on the Taxpayer's dime.
We're not doing a good job of taking care of our own people.

TheHeretic -> RE: Huckabee wanted to isolate HIV patients (12/8/2007 10:21:38 PM)

I think precisely the opposite, DC.  If this had struck and spread most rapidly among the majority, instead of inside a persecuted minority, we'd be treating it as a medical issue instead of a political one (and the money would have started flowing a lot earlier).

dcnovice -> RE: Huckabee wanted to isolate HIV patients (12/8/2007 10:24:45 PM)

I think you're right about the money, Rich. But I don't think there would have been folks calling for "quarantining" people like themselves.

How can I call you GOD when one of the questions was answered by a question?  Don't think that counts....yet.

But it was an improper question, Bear, based on assumptions not in evidence.  I don't need to get blasphemous here though.  You may address me as "Holiness."

Nothing new in Republican circles: Reagans first "solution" to the AIDS crisis was to look into the feasability of creating gay "concentration camps." Luckily, cooler heads won out.

The sooner everyone realizes that the GOP is evil, and close to being fascist nazi zombies, the better off the US will be.

Bipolar, agreed but on the other side we have Kennedy, Pelosi, Kerry, Clinton, Boxer, Abbadabba, and a bunch of socialist leftist yahoos.
Where do we go?
I like the Constitution Party.
I'd vote for Lou Dobbs if he'd run as an independant.
I'd even vote for the Green Party if they had a viable candidate.
One thing for sure, this two party system just ain't gettin it done!

TheHeretic -> RE: Huckabee wanted to isolate HIV patients (12/8/2007 10:30:59 PM)

I don't know if we can get past this hurdle of perception.  Quarantining isn't a code word for "rounding up them durn Homo's."  This isn't about punishment or persecution.  It's about isolating an infectious disease, the same way doctors used to do when there was measles in a house.

I think people with TB are isolated until no longer contagious. They have to take a bunch of meds for like a year to cure it. But there is a cure for TB. There's no cure for HIV/ AIDS.

You are QUITE incorrect concerning isolation.   When they go into a hospital for treatment of any kind, they are isolated and the medical staff is required to wear respirators around them.

However, they are NOT isolated until no longer contagious and they walk right of the hospital that kept them in isolation to be right with the rest of our population.   (I know this as the bitch formerly known as Mrs. Mutt is a respirator qualified hospital nurse who works with such patients on occassion.)

So what form would this quarantine take, Rich?

Well as far as TB transmission is concerned, I was told not to really worry so much about catching TB unless we were in an enclosed space with a TB patient for any lengthy period of time (such as the back of the ambulance). It still worries me, though as I'm not to sure about the validity of that statement. I'm damn sure to put on a N95 if I even suspect TB, but I've only come across it once.

TheHeretic -> RE: Huckabee wanted to isolate HIV patients (12/8/2007 11:00:14 PM)

I'm not sure, DC, and I'm not saying we need one.  The spread of the disease can be blocked by responsible individuals very easily.  My understanding is that the most common transmission in the US these days is between IV drug users, and their sexual partners, regardless of orientation.

Of course, getting drug addicts to behave responsibly can be a bit problematic.  Isolation communities (heavily regulated and inspected) might be the pragmatic solutions.  Give them a 'scrip for their dope.  I've heard the Hawaii Leper Colony was a decent place, except for the whole, you know, leprosy part.

It has been said that this disease is God's method of punishing people for their inappropriate sexual behaviors.

Given the fact that transmission of HIV is most unlikely during sex between two women, it stands to reason that Lesbians are God's chosen people.

If you buy into that TV preacher, fundamentalist, BS.

It's called a joke.   I know it's hard, but try to work with me Heretic.

TheHeretic -> RE: Huckabee wanted to isolate HIV patients (12/8/2007 11:23:13 PM)

I'm guessing you've never watched a rough scene between two women.  The fluids get spread widely.

Nope.   But if you're providing an invitation, I would be more than happy to attend............Strictly for research purposes mind you.   -_-;

I know I'm going to get flamed for this, but I agree with Huckabee that people with AIDS and anyone who is HIV positive should be isolated. I also agree it's being treated as a civil rights issue rather than a health crisis. People with leprocy lived together in colonies, so why not those with HIV and AIDS?

*NOTE*:  Not flaming you here, just want to make a point.

People with leprosy were isolated because no one understood the disease in the old days, they all thought it was a curse from God and contagious because obviously, if this mo-fo was being cursed by God it's a sign that you should stay away from them or be pusnished as well.  Today educated people (sadly around the world many people still hold all the old stigma of that disease in their minds) know that leporsy is an infections disease caused by a bacteria that about 95% of the human population is born with an immunity to.

We also all know how to NOT get HIV nowadays.  If you don't want it, wear a f@*%ing rubber or don't share needles.  Really, how can you say let's put all of the HIV + people into a colony when you can protect yourself so easily?  Should we put everyone with any STD in a camp, even if it is easily prevented by just being smart about sex?

People with tuberculosis aren't restricted and it's a disease that is airborne.  Thus, I find it intriguing that none of these individuals want to protect us from a disease that we can litterally get by riding the elevator with an infected individual, but they're after a blood borne pathogen with a very short half life outside the body.

Actually, there used to be TB colonies like how there were lepper colonies.  My grandfather's brother-in-law had to stay in one while he was infectious.

Of course. (Though I'd be curious to see a documented case of that in the US this century)
