Last night was the premiere of a new series about the paranormal.  Investigators travel to different locations and set up equipment and interview the people to see if they can make contact, get evp readings, etc.  It's similar to Ghost Hunters, which i have also watched.  Last night was two back to back half hour episodes, the first about a little boy who, like in Sixth Sense, saw dead people.  In this episode it seems they brought all the pieces together for good evidence that the boy was indeed seeing the spirit of a young man who was murdered and dumped in the forest area behind the home. In contrast to Ghost Hunters who seem to go on the premise that 80% can be debunked, and you hardly ever see them find anything.

At any rate was wondering if anyone saw the episodes and what they thought of them.

I saw them and I'm not sure about it (maybe because I like Ghost Hunters so much). It brings in a Catholic element (holy water, prayers, house cleansings by priests) whereas Ghost Hunters is specifically non-religious, and I'm not sure why the guy is dragging in his own personal "demons" other than it might make for interesting tv.

For some reason, the religious-based shows unnerve me far more than the non-religious ones, so I was completely sketched out by the time the shows were over last night. I guess I prefer to think of ghosts as energies that are not typically malevolent, and I like the friendlier tone of Ghost Hunters compared to this new show. Also, it seems that this new show is pretty much centered around the founder of the group and Ghost Hunters is more fun for everyone. Also, it seems that TAPS take a more rational / skeptical approach to try to disprove the presence of ghosts rather than a scare-your-undies off "This house is haunted by things that want to hurt you" approach. (And Jay and Grant have more cool equipment.)

Paranormal State uses a "witching hour" (3:00 a.m. for some reason) which I've never heard of, they don't seem to do very thorough interior / exterior investigations except for seance-like settings, and their approach to solving cases seems to be to bring in other mediums / psychics, etc. who are of the same "This house is haunted by things that want to hurt you" mentality. I guess this group doesn't want to be exactly like TAPS but I didn't really care for the show. (But it freaked me out anyway.)

Was this on A&E, I tried to watch part of it with my mom, and I heard them talking about "demons" and I walked out... I would love a show about the paranormal.. but I do not believe in "demons"

I don't watch much TV, but I can tell you about some paranormal experiences I've had FIRST HAND that cannot be explained away.

It has been said that Jesus was crucified at 3pm.  Satan always reverts anything to do with Christianity (upside down cross...etc) , so therefore the real "witching hour" is said to be 3am.

You know, if proving the existence of ghosts, spirits, deamons... whatever... if it were as easy as a group of plumbers make it seem... wouldn't we all have concrete scientific proof by now? Wouldn't we be teaching "Ghost Physics 101" at every major University? "Afterlife Politics" and "Post mortem law" would also be biggies.

This stuff is all just turn of the century "medium" hokum, updated for the 21st century TV audiance. Read the books by Joseph Dunninger "How to Make a Spirit Walk" and "The Table Rappers" to get some idea of the basics of how to hoodwink people into thinking they're seeing something. Only in this case, they can manipulate things via careful editing, and the restricted view of the camera. Here they do it not to drain your pocketbook, but to boost their own rateings... and keep themselves on the gravy train for years to come.

Same thing with that John Edwards character: "cold reading" is a stage magic technique all unto itself. If they didn't edit those conversations down, you'd see much more plainly how he pulls information out of someone via body language, inflection, and implied info.

bpb, things in this world that cannot be explained are around.  I don't have cable so I cannot attest either way to the shows mentioned, I can speak from personal experiences; one that happened less than a year ago an I still drive by the place it happened an I have another tour set up for later this month at the same place.  I felt things that cound not be 'explained' away {the worst backlabour I have ever encountered, among other things}; to those who are skeptical, I would invite you to go with me.  I am a skeptic until I see or experience things that cannot be explained, then I am a believer, and I am a believer.

I'm not saying these things DON'T exist... I'm saying these people on TV, coming up with evidence every single week, are charlatans... (The fact that Jerry Falwell was a fake, doesn't change the possibility of there being a God.) Proof of survival of personality after death is something that has been eluding man since the beginning. I have a hard time suspending my disbelief with the ghost hunting plumbers.

I used to do ghost hunts 15 to 20 years ago... The Stanley Hotel, the Hand hotel, several of the cemetaries in Blackhawk, and a certain house just off of Cheeseman Park, which was the basis for the movie "The Changeling." I've seen enough to think there might be something to it... but I'm not on TV claiming that there is, just to sell shampoo, underarm deodorant, and SUVs.

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof.

Have you ever read Einsteins ideas on Ghost and the Human soul?

“The mystical trend of our time, which shows itself particularly in the rampant growth of the so-called Theosophy and Spiritualism, is for me no more than a symptom of weakness and confusion. Since our inner experiences consist of reproductions, and combinations of sensory impressions, the concept of a soul without a body seem to me to be empty and devoid of meaning.”

http://www.stephenjaygould.org/ctrl/quotes_einstein.html

http://www.einsteinandreligion.com/

Every body contains internal heat and energy. When we die, where does all that internal heat and energy go?

I tell everyone that I don't belive in ghost. However, I'm also the first say that I'll be ready to haunt people after I die.

Anyhow, I also have an interest in what Penn and Teller have to say on the matter of people on TV who try to prove that Ghost Exist

BWAHAHHAHAHA ... It always amuses me when twits,  both fundie christian as well as devil worshippers,  use the whole invertion theme to portray anti-christianity.

The inverted cross was originally known as St Peter's Cross.  Supposedly,  Peter was martyred by being crucified upside down.  The inverted cross became a symbol of Peter's humility and his belief that he was unworthy to die in the same way as his Master.

I often wonder if Saint Peter winces everytime a satanworshipper or a christian decrees that his cross is labeled as satanic.  And I love exploding the feeble minded when I inform them that the inverted cross wasn't seen as blasphemous until that dickhead Crowley and his "successor" LaVey started proclaiming that it was such.  Yeah sheep,  way to feed the egos of those jackasses.

As to the whole 3am being the *cough*  twue witching hour ... don't get me started.

I love watching Ghost Hunters. I think that TAPS is doing more than a lot of others to make ghost not seem so bad or scary. I hate watching a show that goes on about religion and demons possessing people and trying to hurt us. Why must ghost be demons and why must they want to hurt us. I'm a firm believer that Man does not know all so should keep an open mind. After all, we use to think the world was flat. Who truly knows what is going on on another level our 5 senses can't pick up on. We can't see infrared and ultraviolet, but they do exist in the color spectrum, as do other colors the human eye can not pick up on.

Thanks for the info on ST. Peter's Cross, I always wondered and the origins of the inverted cross. It's rather like the Swastika. Before Hilter got hold of it, it had a much nicer origin.

batshalom i enjoy TAPS better as it is more entertaining in that the personalities of the crew are displayed more, there is more interaction. They also try to keep it very scientific and go in with a very skeptical attitude. The only 2 shows on TAPS which appeared to have "real activity" going on in them was the one where they visited the lighthouse and th eone where the chair moved.  The episode where the guy was knocked down was impressive.   The show Paranormal seemed to be going after the shock value more, you can tell they are out to scare people.  The way they define demon is a discontented spirit with malevolent intentions. i don't think believing in demons has to necessarily have to come from a religous base.  They talk about demons on TASPS too - when they went to that castle in Ireland the castle manager warned them about the demon that inhabited the castle.

Mistress Pav share if you like.  i have some of my own experiences but i don't talk about them much.  i understand.

Bipolarbear i don't think they make it seem easy in fact TAPS walks away 90% of the time with absolutely nothing. i think of all those hours setting up equipment, the traveling they do, the hours spent reviewing the videos and tape recordings only to find nothing   they have the patience of a saint.  By the way TAPS went to the Stanly Hotel.  i do have to remember when i am watching that i am seeing only what they wanted me to see, only whats been left after carful editing of hours of footage, with that in mind i try to keep an open mind and still enjoy myself watching it.  i am waiting for the day when they say - Is there anyone here who would like to communicate with us and a spirit talks back loud and clear saying Yeah i do lol.  Somehow i don't think it works like that, so i will be waiting a  very long time.

FangsandFeet, thanks for posting the links - when i am less tired i plan to read them.

RazorJAK thats a question i always thought about - how can it be satanic to display an upside down cross if that is how Peter was crucified - never made sense to me.

i didn't hear 3 am was the witching hour i thought they said it was the dead hour??

Maybe i am gullible but from the footage they showed it sure appeared that little boy was telling the truth and it wasn't staged - if it was he deserves an acadamy award.  He picked out the spirit he was seeing in a group photo - i got chills up my spine when he took the investigator down the basement and the investigator asked him where Tim was and the little boy started to walk away a bit and said - He's right there

It is almost the "witching hour" now and i am off to bed

Indeed,  and is still used heavily in it's original form in many cultures ( those who practice Buddhism being on of the more prominant ).

The origins and (de)evolution of symbols is one of my passions.

i liked the show.  But then i've met Lorraine Warren and used to live near the Warrens when i lived in CT.  i also lived next to a town where there was a case in court where they tried to use demonic possession as a legal defense.  But i was raised Charismatic Catholic and have attended exorcisms.  It's easy not to believe it until it happens to you...

i respect the host (who is indeed hawt) bringing in more experienced folks when He feels He is in over His head.  Wise move.  i was about to lose respect for Him if He did try to handle it Himself.

For Julia:
The show follows a group of Penn State students who are members of an undergraduate student organization.  The show is supposed to about their lives and what they do as part of the organization:

They did have a "psychic challenge" it was just on - anyone watch it. Psychics from all over had to compete in a series of tests, they were scored and eliminated one by one down to the final one.  The challenges were correct info on a crime scene, finding people in remote places, reading people correctly, matching up people and occupations, finding the room where a person was in distress,etc..... Each had their strength, but it did show that people do indeed have abilities that simply cannot be explained - chance??  You'd have to have watched to  determine that for yourself. i don't think it was chance.
