At the risk of coming off as a troll, I have to confess that I'm really left cold by all the Y/you-ing and I/i-ing that goes on in kinky communities.  I barely even understand it, much less see the need for its use.  Browsing around here, though, it looks like I might well be in the minority.

What's the overriding purpose of it, and how necessary is it to your kink/power dynamic?

I think it's an internet thing.

I tend to see it as more of a chat thing...

Are you talking on the personals side of collarme, or the boards here where you are posting... I do not spend much time on the other side browsing profiles, but I would say that on this side those who do the slashy speak thing are a minority

At the risk of not caring about my popularity, I'll tolerate it if others write like that but I am anal about spelling and punctuation and it really (no, I mean REALLY) grates to see conventions thrown to the wind in order to emphasise that someone is a lowly subby-wub or a Grand Master Dommy-Nant.

I find it easier to accept extraneous capital letters than I do lower case, presumably because the likes of Daniel Defoe used them frequently for all nouns.

Personally, I like to demonstrate that I can follow rules by simply following the rules of the English language. I do not need to demonstrate wanton disregard for my shift key in order to prove my submission.

I dislike it...but some people find it cute.  I don't think it's necessary.  Thankfully, my Owner hasn't ordered me to give up my capitalized I's. :-p

DiamondJim -> RE: Does D/s really require screwing with pronouns? (12/12/2007 12:53:47 PM)

I don't use it at all.  I've noticed that this is mainly an online and a chatroom phenomenon.  Those who learned their dominance or submission in those venues tend to find it much more important than those who have learned it through real life experience.  It really makes little difference to me, as a dominant, whether one capitalizes the pronoun referring to me or not.  The capitalization doesn't make me more dominant.  Just makes things more cumbersome, IMO.

I personally hate the slashy speak thingys...I do however occasionaly put a capital H on the He pronoun in forums when referring to my Sir...mainly cause sometimes it makes more sense to emphasise that the He I am referring to is the Toppish type persn in the story, especially if I am reffereing to more than one he in a story....

Alot of times I forget to capitolize I too...but it has more to do with lazy typing skills than anything else.....

TheLibertinistic -> RE: Does D/s really require screwing with pronouns? (12/12/2007 1:03:24 PM)

Secretly, that's way closer to how I feel about it.  I'm just not going to stick that much snark in the first post because I am fine with leaving the flamewar til later.

I show my dominance by beating my shift key into submission as I type.

SunNMoon -> RE: Does D/s really require screwing with pronouns? (12/12/2007 1:06:22 PM)

When I’m writing in the message boards most of the time (I think) I use correct capitalizations. But get me in im and “I” may or may not be capitalized. (I'm lazy and wanting to type fast).

I also don’t use slash speak, and I believe the closest I come to it is using “Dom” sometimes instead of “dom.”

TheLibertinistic -> RE: Does D/s really require screwing with pronouns? (12/12/2007 1:07:07 PM)

And let's not even start on substituting self reference for titles...  This girl... that girl... it.

Honestly, the only reason I can begin to justify is that having to alter something as frequently used as self-reference would be a pretty frequent reminder of one's position.

I never use it...and had never even seen it used before the advent of the internet.

In some correspondence with a Domina where we have gone beyond opening pleasantries, I might capitalize the "Y" in "You" or "Your" as a small gesture of respect.

Given the limits of my typing skills, that's about as far as I can go. [sm=biggrin.gif]

gorgeous1 -> RE: Does D/s really require screwing with pronouns? (12/12/2007 1:10:51 PM)

I don't think it's a necessary thing either. I will sometimes capitalize "master" or "dominant" but...yeah, the whole I/i Y/you thing seems a bit laborious.

I'm a submissive, but enjoy dominating my shift key too.

FRSguy -> RE: Does D/s really require screwing with pronouns? (12/12/2007 1:12:34 PM)

I know its a good way to get me to not read a post.

lilsubl -> RE: Does D/s really require screwing with pronouns? (12/12/2007 1:23:14 PM)

my former master required the usage of capitalization for him & slashy speak for us, etc...i found it to be cumbersome & annoying...i believe like the others that it is an online thing, learned in chatrooms...i don't tend to use the shift key much due to a hand injury that makes it difficult to hold the darn thing down.....

There are some that are in a dynamic where it is required that post here whose opinions I find valuable.  While overall I find it a bit annoying, I recognize that someone could have a healthy and happy relationship dynamic where they use that type of written communication or require it.

Sometimes it's just a throwback to the "good old days".  I can recall when I was first getting into the lifestyle that in the majority of chatrooms it was actually required.

pretty much the same reason i dont use it.  i cant feel the pinky finger on my right hand so its pretty hit-and-miss if i'm on the right key or not at any given time.

Daddy laughs and understands, and he's the only one i have to answer to.

Like most of the posters, I'm not very keen on the slash speak. Most times it is annoying and I don't see the purpose of over emphasizing the roles of a D or s type person. Granted there is a segment of the population where the Doms do require their subs to type in this manner, it's another avenue to keep a sub in that mindset and a constant reminder of their place in the relationship dynamic. Some Doms are very strict on protocol and others aren't.

In my opinion, it's not about D/s.  It's about the Internet and chatrooms and the way people choose to express themself in this setting.  Some people like to use it and some don't.  Just like some people use different fonts, colors, all lowercase letters, all italics, etc.  To me, it's just a matter of personal style and taste and self-expression.  Why should everyone have to use the same writing style in expressive writing?
