You can deny it all you want, but this country was founded on Judeo-Christian priciples. Religion is referenced in our Declaration Of Independence, God is on our currency. And most people in this country are Christian.
So many mistake freedom of religion with freedom from religion. We all know how well that worked in Nazi Germany or the Soviet Union don't we?

Place the US constitution in it's context; it was written in an age of almost universal (Western) Christian beliefs, no alternative was on the table.

Yes, freedom of religion meant the freedom to practice any Christian religion (which is self-explanatory in an age of universal Christianity), but many Americans were dissenters from another country who had been subject to oppression, so the aim was inclusivitiy, and that's the key point, here, inclusivity. Transpose this principle to the modern day, and it would have been freedom to pursue religious or non religious beliefs, i.e. freedom of expression.

I'm curious with the USSR/Nazi comments, are you saying secular beliefs inevitably lead to genocide? If so, I'd advise on some reading around development in Christian societies. A mere 100 years prior to the US constitution, half of Europe was engaged in lopping heads off in the name of the one true faith - something that the US constitution was aiming to guard against.
