That's funny, my ex's um was absolutely obbsessed with trains too!
I bought him a train alarm clock that had a small train going around when the alarm went off, train toys of all kinds etc.

I used to do wood burning as a child with the modified soldering iron, and as was pointed out, it is ridiculously slow.

Another approach is to buy differently shaped metal tools, or twist welding rods into different shapes, heat them up in a fire, and burn the designs into the wood.  When I built my first wood fish tank I bought a propane torch with different jets and used that to lightly carbonize the top layer of wood.

The end result tends to be quite stunning if you take the time to make it happen.

Happy kids to have a mum who can make such beautiful custom pieces after a boys heart for them.

Another place to find line art are the various window colour sites.

After finishing the lineart on the bed with the burning tool, you could colour it with some non-toxic paint. Or, if there is no time for that, you could give the paint to him with the bed, as a mother-son colouring project.

if you dont do the painting with non-toxic paint, you can very lightly stain it with food coloring.

the bed looks beautiful!!  congrats on such a good job!
