ghitaPVH -> any thoughts on wood burning. (12/16/2007 7:36:49 AM)

Hi yall. I just built my two year old a toddlerbed for christmas. its kind of plain, just your basic wooden bed, but I think it turned out pretty nice.

My mom is buying him a new bedding set that I think is going to have thomas the tank engine on it. the little bugger is obsessed with trains. anyway.

So here's my actual question. Anyone got any experinace with wood burning? You can buy these kits at the craft store for about $9. Are they worth anything? Do the patterns work? There is a wood burning pattern there with a train on it. I was thinking about burning it into the headboard of the bed. but Ive never done it before, is it hard, or just kind of a follow the lines type thing. Thoughts?

ghita~

I can't help with the wood burning, but am in awe that you built that bed! I wish I could do carpentry like that.

I've used those kits. It's more of a follow the lines type of thing. However, you might try calling around to trophy shops. Many of them these days have laser engravers that can cut a photo into any surface. (I have several peices of furniture with LOTR "elfin" quotes burned into them this way, and they look amazing.) If you want to do the burn in, a lot will depend on what the wood is. Oak takes forever, while lighter pines burn really, really well.

 They work well,but are slow.

It`s really just a soldering iron, with some different shaped tips.

Guaranteed that you`ll burn yourself a few times before your done.Be careful.

Wow- I think I did one of those as a kid

oh, so its a masochist's dream project huh?...lol.

thanks for the idea, bipolarbear, but im running out of time, and money, so whatever I decide to do its going to have to be a do-it-yourselfer type project.

The bed is basic soft pine, typical 2x4's from the building section at Lowes...Im a cheap parent...lol...

All you need is a soldering iron, you dont even need special tips. Sketch the pattern on the wood, wait until the soldering iron is hot, hold is like you would a pen and slide it across the pattern with -slight- and even pressure.
Good luck!

Now...anyone know where I could find a nice line drawing of Thomas the tank enginge?

~or..ehrm..any line drawings that bear a strange resemblance to Thomas the Tank Engine because I wouldnt want to break copyright laws or anything.

try http://www.modellbahnott.com/thomas/coloring.html

MissHarlet -> RE: any thoughts on wood burning. (12/16/2007 8:19:38 AM)

coloring books have the best line drawings and you can shrink or enlarge them with a good copy machine

ghitaPVH -> RE: any thoughts on wood burning. (12/16/2007 8:23:05 AM)

awesome...thanks!

MissHarlet -> RE: any thoughts on wood burning. (12/16/2007 8:33:00 AM)

You are welcome ..sometimes the most available things are not what we think of .. ie coloring books lol

ghitaPVH -> RE: any thoughts on wood burning. (12/16/2007 8:35:15 AM)

Yeah they work but the cheaper versions don't seem to burn as fast,What I would do is free hand a pattern and then take a router gouge it out and darken it with a propane tourch....bounty

ghitaPVH -> RE: any thoughts on wood burning. (12/16/2007 8:45:09 AM)

omg bounty, I could never get that precise with a router. or are you using one of those little tiny routers? I could just see me trying to hold my huge router up to the bed and see where the hell the lines were amongst all the flying saw dust. you are awesome if you can use a router in that way. I can barely make a cabinet door without fucking up somewhere. And all that takes is straight lines.

Then the answer maybe be a dramel tool, it lite and easy to work with and will do a damm fine job,Lay the head board down on the floor and it will be easy to wotk with then...

chellekitty -> RE: any thoughts on wood burning. (12/16/2007 9:04:40 AM)

how about instead of a giant router a little rotary tool like a dremel and instead of a giant propane torch (i am imagining a 2 litre tank lol) a mini butane torch for precision like this... http://www.denlorstools.com/home/dt1/page_5294_151/solder_it_sodpt220_the_standard_for_hand_held_mini.html

HaveRopeWillBind -> RE: any thoughts on wood burning. (12/16/2007 9:05:56 AM)

Ghita,
Whatever you decide to do be sure to practice the technique on some scrap wood of the same type you used before you begin to work on the actual bed. That way you will get a sense of the right pressure to apply and speed of motion to use.

camille65 -> RE: any thoughts on wood burning. (12/16/2007 9:20:33 AM)

I was just about to say that. Practice on something first so that you get a feel for the tool. It's been years but I had a Dremel type woodburner and it was a lot of fun to use. Yes you will end up with a few burns but the end result I bet will be fantastic. You rock as a present maker!!
